Monica Dolan among supporting cast confirmed for Smoggie Queens series 2, as Michelle Visage and Charlotte Riley return to the hit BBC Comedy
Joining the cast for series 2 is BAFTA and Olivier award winning actor Monica Dolan (Appropriate Adult, Sherwood, Mr Bates vs The Post Office) as well as Amalia Vitale (Big Mood) and Freya Parker (Lazy Susan).
This new series promises to bring more slapstick and silly laughs, with some excellent one liners from Dickie (Dunning), and a copious amount of joy for viewers. Dickie, Mam (Mark Benton), Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), Sal (Patsy Lowe) and Stewart (Elijah Young) are back in the Boro as our Smoggie Queens find a place of pride for themselves in their small corner of the UK.
Also returning to the show, is Drag Race royalty Michelle Visage, and actors Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders), Bill Fellows (Ted Lasso), Michael Hodgson (Vera), Lauryn Redding (Standing At The Sky's Edge), Peter McPherson (In From the Side), Neil Grainger (Hebburn), Michael Mather (It's A Sin) and TV presenter Steph McGovern.
Phil Dunning says: "I'm so happy to see so many of the Smoggie family returning for Series 2, and over the moon to welcome the incredibly talented newbies. Can't wait to make TV and eat parmos with all of them.'
Showing what the North East is made of and the resilience of the queer community, the gang forge ahead with new relationships and rekindle some old ones, all while they cement those chosen family bonds. Expect more mad antics and chaotic energy as the Queens take you on (another) ride of your life!
Produced by Hat Trick Productions, the series is written and created by Middlesbrough native, Phil Dunning. Dunning was nominated for three BAFTAs in 2025 including 'Male Performance in a Comedy Programme' for his portrayal of Dickie. Additionally, he was recognised in the 'Writer: Comedy' category and was nominated for 'Emerging Talent: Fiction' in the BAFTA TV Craft Awards.
The first series won Best Comedy at the RTS North East Awards, whilst Dunning won Best Newcomer, and more recently the series won Best Comedy Programme at the Broadcast Digital Awards.
Smoggie Queens (6 x 30) is a Hat Trick production (Derry Girls, Outnumbered, Have I Got News For You and Episodes) for BBC Three and iPlayer, and funding support by North East Screen Industries Partnership delivered by North East Screen with worldwide distribution by Hat Trick International. The series was commissioned by Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy. The producer is Chris Jones (Smoggie Queens S1, Kate & Koji, Whistle Through The Shamrocks). The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Gregor Sharp. Series 2 is directed by Tom Marshall (Ted Lasso, Famalam).

Kate's foundation launches animated films to support children's development
The Princess of Wales has spoken about the importance of raising children better equipped to 'face the future' as her foundation launched a project to support the development of youngsters. Kate has been closely involved in the creation of a series of animated films aimed at helping those working with families and carers explain the vital importance of social and emotional development. In June, the princess spent time with two of the illustrators working on the films and met early years practitioners also involved in their creation, during a creative workshop at her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. She is said to be extremely passionate about the release of the films which Kensington Palace has described as a key step in her centre's work to continue raising awareness about the importance of the early years development of a child's life. To mark the release Kate said: 'Early childhood has been recognised as the golden opportunity to build strong foundations for future life health and happiness. 'The new animated films from The Centre of Early Childhood showcase how adults can create nurturing, loving interactions with children, helping to foster social and emotional development during their earliest years. 'These core social and emotional skills are essential in forming healthy relationships and are fundamental building blocks that can carry us through life. 'That is why we want to raise the awareness of, and celebrate, the extraordinary value of everyday moments of connection which matter more than ever in a rapidly changing world. 'Early childhood offers a sacred opportunity to transform our societies for the better and by nurturing these skills in our babies and children, we will be raising a younger generation better equipped to face the future.' The series, also available in Welsh and with British Sign Language, uses different styles of animation from curated line illustrations to papercraft, to help bring core concepts related to child development to life. Topics covered include how we grow an emotionally healthy brain; noticing and navigating feelings; managing big feelings together; back and forth interactions; supporting early learning; and creating space for connection. The centre is working with universities, charities and professional bodies to build the films into training and practice across the country. The new series follows on from the princess's major Shaping Us Framework initiative, aimed at increasing awareness of social and emotional skills.

Antisemitism reports spiked day after Bob Vylan Glastonbury chants
Reports of antisemitic incidents in the UK spiked a day after punk duo Bob Vylan's controversial performance at Glastonbury, according to a charity which described how communities are facing 'extreme levels of Jew-hatred'. Sentiment towards Israel is influencing and driving contemporary anti-Jewish discourse, the Community Security Trust (CST) said. The organisation, which monitors antisemitism in the UK, said there were a total of 1,521 antisemitic incidents across the UK in the first half of this year. This is the second-highest total ever reported to the organisation in the first six months of any year but is down by a quarter from the record high of 2,019 incidents recorded between January and June last year. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said antisemitic incidents and crimes 'remain shamefully and persistently high'. There were at least 200 incidents every month in the first half of 2025, with the highest daily total at 26 incidents reported on June 29. This was a day after a performance by punk duo Bob Vylan at the world-renowned Glastonbury music festival in Somerset. During the set, which was livestreamed on BBC, rapper Bobby Vylan chanted 'Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)'. The CST said the incidents reported to the charity involved anti-Jewish responses to events at Glastonbury as well as to the CST's subsequent statement on X which had branded the chants 'utterly chilling'. Avon and Somerset Police said last month that inquiries were continuing in relation to the comments made onstage during Bob Vylan's performance. The second-worst day for what the CST described as 'anti-Jewish hate' was May 17 when 19 incidents were recorded – coming a day after Israel announced an expansion of its military operation in Gaza. The CST said: 'Both of these cases illustrate how sentiment and rhetoric towards Israel and Zionism influence, shape and drive contemporary anti-Jewish discourse, online and offline, often around totemic events that grab mainstream public attention.' Just over half (51%) of all incidents in the first half of this year 'referenced or were linked to Israel, Palestine, the Hamas terror attack (of October 7, 2023) or the subsequent outbreak of conflict', the CST said. This was a similar proportion to the same period last year, and up from 16% in the first six months of 2023, reflecting a rise in 'anti-Jewish hate in the UK when Israel is at war', the CST said. Mark Gardner, the organisation's chief executive, said the statistics demonstrated 'extreme levels of Jew-hatred, committed in the name of anti-Israel activism'. June saw the highest number of incidents, with 326 being recorded following heightening tensions in Gaza. A total of 76 violent anti-Jewish assaults were recorded by the charity in the first six months of 2025, including three categorised as 'extreme violence' that resulted in either grievous bodily harm or a threat to life. The CST added that 84 cases of damage and desecration of Jewish property were recorded, as well as 21 incidents of mass-produced antisemitic literature and 1,236 incidents of verbal or written abuse. The trust said 572 online incidents were reported to them in the first half of the year, accounting for 38% of the total and down 12% from the same period last year. Giving examples of the range of incidents reported, Mr Gardner, said: 'It involves racial hatred, yelled at Jewish schoolchildren, scrawled on synagogue walls and thrown at anyone who is Jewish, or suspected of being Jewish. 'In such difficult times, CST is proud to give strength to British Jews when they most need it. 'We thank those politicians and police officers who have supported our community, especially when Jew-hatred is effectively sanctioned in so many spaces that falsely claim to oppose all forms of racism.' There were 774 antisemitic incidents recorded by the CST in Greater London, a drop of 26% over the same timeframe in 2024, and 194 cases in Greater Manchester, a decrease of 28% compared to the previous year. Outside these cities, the police areas with the highest number of reports were West Yorkshire with 73, Hertfordshire with 52, Scotland with 36, Sussex with 32 and West Midlands with 39. Northern Ireland had nine reports while Suffolk was the only mainland police region not to record a single incident, the trust said. Ms Cooper said antisemitism 'has a profoundly damaging impact both on the individuals affected and the wider Jewish community', and vowed the Government 'remains steadfast in its commitment to root out the poison of antisemitism wherever it is found'. The Government's independent adviser on antisemitism, Lord Mann, said the latest data shows 'that antisemitism continues to impact the British Jewish community at an unprecedented level'. He added: 'Antisemitism must be recognised by everyone as anti-Jewish racism and there must be a no tolerance approach to it across civil society at all levels.'
