Suicide cases among Inter students on the rise across TG

Hyderabad: Despite the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education offering free counseling, at least 10 students allegedly committed suicide over failing and not securing good marks in the recently released Inter exam results.
Reports say that most of the students who died by suicide failed in one or two subjects in the first year of MPC and BiPC courses. The incidents were reported Kothapet, Gundlapochampally, Banjara Hills and Moti Nagar in Hyderabad. Bhongir, Peddapalli and Mancherial districts also reported suicides by failed Inter students.
Officials said that Tele Manas, the free mental health helpline set by the Inter Board, has been receiving calls from the depressed students after the announcement of the inter results. Students were reportedly stressed out due to scoring low marks and not living up to the expectations of their parents.
Every year, during the commencement of the exams or after the announcement of the results, the helpline has been receiving calls and the students were being counselled to ensure they are not depressed. Some of the students were found to be taking the extreme step without consulting the helpline. Most of the students who approached the counselors through the helpline have become normal after undergoing treatment. Last year, seven cases of student suicides were reported and in 2023, six were reported.
Officials of the Education department underscore the need to have regular counseling sessions in every college throughout the academic year in the wake of increasing suicides by students.
Asif Hussain Sohail, president of Telangana Parents Association for Child rights and Safety, said, 'It is very disappointing that students are committing suicides due to being unable to handle stress and over fear of exam results. The most important thing is that parents should interact with their children, and motivate them that failure is a part and parcel of life, that they can once again give the exam. Parents need to instill confidence in children, but it is missing at the ground level'.
He suggested the mandatory set-up of counseling cells in every school and college to prevent the growing instances of student suicides in the state.

Tele-MANAS receives over 65k calls in three years

Dharwad: Tele MANAS, a scheme launched by Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (DIMHANS) three years ago has succeeded in making thousands of people, cutting across age and gender barriers, come out of mental stress and lead a confident life. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It is a known fact that in recent years, people of all ages, from young children to the elderly, have been grappling with increasing levels of mental stress. Some, unable to cope, have even taken the extreme step of committing suicide. Tele-MANAS has proven that with early intervention through empathetic counselling, reassurance, and guidance, mental health challenges can be effectively addressed. In the last three years, over 65,000 people have called Tele MANAS and got their mental agonies dissolved through counselling. A student who had failed in PUC exam had gone to railway station to commit suicide and as he was about to enter the tracks, he saw a board that said "Need help dealing with exam pressure?". He made a free call to Tele-MANAS, spoke with a counsellor, felt relieved, abandoned his suicide attempt, reappeared for the exams, and is now employed in a bank. What is Tele-MANAS? Post-Covid, a significant number of people in the country started experiencing mental health issues. In response, the union govt launched Tele-MANAS in 2022. Each state has a Tele-MANAS centre, with the ones in Karnataka operating from NIMHANS (Bengaluru) and DIMHANS (Dharwad). Despite limited public awareness, both centres have collectively received over one lakh calls in just three years. According to National Nodal Officer Ranganath Kulkarni, the free Tele-MANAS helpline is available 24x7 at 14416 or 1800-891-4416 At the Dharwad centre, a team of 20 trained counsellors work in shifts to attend to calls. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now If a call is missed due to high traffic, a new waiting system ensures that the caller is reconnected soon after. Anyone having mental stress due to various reasons can contact this helpline and receive help. 15% of cases severe Analysis of past calls shows that most calls come during night hours. About 85% of callers seek help for issues like mental health, education, personal life (in-law disputes, hatred etc), and sexual problems. Around 15% of the cases are severe, including addiction or suicidal tendencies. In such serious cases, calls are referred to psychiatrists, who may conduct video consultations or call the person to DIMHANS for in-person care. All caller information is kept strictly confidential. DIMHANS director Arun Kumar said that with over 60,000 calls handled in the past three years, the Tele-MANAS initiative has proven highly successful in helping people manage stress. Students, in particular, are encouraged to make use of this service to shape their academic futures. The core message of the programme-"There is a solution to every problem. No one needs to choose suicide or any extreme measure—live a better, stress-free life".

Gujarat woman dies by suicide after poisoning seven-year-old son; financial woes suspected

During transit, the boy began vomiting. When asked what had happened, he reportedly told relatives that his mother had given him poison before taking it herself. Doctors administered emergency treatment and later shifted the woman to Surat Civil Hospital, where she died during treatment on the morning of July 31. The child remains under care at the private hospital. Surat DCP Alok Kumar confirmed that the woman had consumed a poisonous substance called Selfoss and had mixed the same in her son's milk. The case is being investigated as attempted murder and accidental death. Postmortem proceedings are underway, and statements from the family are being recorded. The woman had experienced personal turmoil in recent years. Her first husband died in an accident in 2020. A second marriage ended unsuccessfully, after which she returned to live with her father in the Laskana area of Surat. Though the exact reason behind the drastic act remains unclear, police suspect financial hardship may have been a trigger. Laskana police continue to investigate to establish the full sequence of events and the underlying motive.
