Tesla
CEO
Elon Musk
responded sarcastically to a viral video showing a Waymo autonomous vehicle attempting what appeared to be a head-on collision while blocking traffic in Austin, Texas. "But what do I know about technology,"
Musk
posted on X, reigniting the long-standing debate between LiDAR-based and vision-only autonomous driving systems.
The incident, captured on July 6, 2025, showed the Waymo
robotaxi
making "aggressive forward maneuvers" while threatening an exiting vehicle. "@Cyber_Trailer" posted the footage, writing: "Waymo chooses violence. Blocked traffic lane while attempting head on collision with exiting vehicle. Continues to threaten vehicle with aggressive forward maneuver."
Vision-Only systems outperform LiDAR in recent tests
The Austin incident has provided fresh ammunition for critics of
LiDAR technology
, particularly Tesla supporters who advocate for camera-based systems. Ray, a Tesla enthusiast (@ray4tesla), used the moment to highlight broader concerns about sensor fusion approaches.

"Elon famously said 6 years ago that LiDAR is a fool's errand and many at the time were skeptical about his claim," Ray posted. "Now it's becoming increasingly clear that Elon is right about the use of LiDAR. Sensor fusion is not optimal for autonomous driving, as evidenced by countless incidents of Waymo blocking intersections, getting stuck in traffic for no reason, getting confused in construction zones and even worse going in the lane of opposing traffic."
The debate extends beyond individual incidents, with major autonomous vehicle companies reconsidering their sensor strategies. Chinese tech giants
Baidu
and
Xpeng
are reportedly transitioning toward vision-only approaches, following Tesla's lead in relying primarily on camera systems and neural networks.
"Separately, CEO Robin Li recently alluded to Baidu's transition to vision-only approach while Xpeng is in the early stage to phase out Lidars," the user noted, suggesting a broader industry trend away from expensive LiDAR sensors toward more software-dependent solutions.

DeepSeek effect: New free, open source ChatGPT rival GLM 4.5 breaks cover in China

A new AI model has been introduced in China. Called GLM-4.5, this is an open-source model unlike most of the US-based AI systems that are closed, and some benchmarks put it ahead of even DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT. GLM 4.5 has been developed by startup (formerly known as Zhipu). According to the company, this model is designed specifically for intelligent agent tasks and uses what is described as an 'agentic' AI architecture. This means that the AI model can autonomously take on tasks and handle reasoning, coding and other applications more effectively. advertisementAccording to the company, GLM-4.5 is a large language model featuring 355 billion total parameters, with an optimised variant named GLM-4.5 Air that has 106 billion parameters, making it lighter and faster. The model supports a context window of 128,000 tokens, allowing it to process long conversations or documents without losing focus. It is also said to include native function calling, enabling seamless integration with external software and workflows. The company highlights that these capabilities make GLM-4.5 suitable for a wide range of applications, including advanced coding, physics simulations, game development and interactive company has also revealed that the GLM 4.5 has been released under an Apache 2.0 open-source licence. This means it is free for use and developers can freely download and deploy it, CNBC reported. claims that GLM4.5 ranks third globally and first among Chinese and open-source models across 12 major AI evaluation benchmarks. According to the company, the model scored 98.2 per cent on the MATH500 reasoning test and 91 per cent on the AIME24 challenge. It also delivered 64.2 per cent accuracy on SWE-Bench Verified, a benchmark used for software engineering tasks, and achieved a 90.6 per cent tool-calling success rate, edging out leading by Nvidia chip One of GLM4.5's biggest advantages is cost. CEO ZhangPeng told CNBC that the model can run on just eight Nvidia H20 chips. These chips are designed specifically for the Chinese market under US export controls. This is roughly half the hardware required by DeepSeek's comparable model. ZhangPeng revealed that the company does not currently need to purchase additional chips, indicating that the model already has sufficient computing than DeepSeekThe company reveals that it has also aggressively cut token pricing. will charge $0.11 per million input tokens compared with $0.14 for DeepSeek R1, and $0.28 per million output tokens. This is lower than the $2.19 charged by DeepSeek. Notably, tokens are the standard unit of data measurement for AI context, DeepSeek, the advanced LLM launched earlier this year, is developed by the Chinese startup High Flyer AI and is known for rivalling OpenAI's ChatGPT in natural language understanding and reasoning, while requiring significantly less training cost, reportedly under $6 million. Although GLM-4.5 is about half the size of DeepSeek, it is touted to be using agentic AI design to maintain high accuracy and flexibility in completing tasks with fewer computational the arrival of GLM-4.5 comes at a time when China's AI model development is seeing a rapid surge. By July, Chinese companies had released 1,509 large language models, more than any other country, according to the state-owned Xinhua news agency.- Ends

US-China trade talks resume in Stockholm as August 12 tariff deadline looms

US and Chinese officials resumed critical trade talks in Stockholm on Tuesday, aiming to de-escalate a mounting economic standoff. read more A US and Chinese flag flutter outside Sweden's government offices "Rosenbad" in Stockholm, Sweden, July 29, 2025, ahead of the second day of trade talks between China and the US. Reuters US and Chinese officials began a second day of talks in Stockholm on Tuesday to resolve longstanding economic disputes and step back from an escalating trade war between the world's two biggest economies. The meetings may not yield immediate large breakthroughs but the two sides could agree to another 90-day extension of a tariff truce struck in mid-May. It may also pave the way for a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later in the year, though Trump on Tuesday denied going out of his way to seek one. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The delegations met for more than five hours on Monday at Rosenbad, the Swedish prime minister's office in central Stockholm. Neither side made statements after the first day of talks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was seen arriving at Rosenbad on Tuesday morning after a separate meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. China's Vice Premier He Lifeng also arrived at the venue. China is facing an August 12 deadline to reach a durable tariff agreement with Trump's administration, after reaching preliminary deals in May and June to end weeks of escalating tit-for-tat tariffs and a cut-off of rare earth minerals. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from US duties snapping back to triple-digit levels that would amount to a bilateral trade embargo. The Stockholm talks follow Trump's biggest trade deal yet with the European Union on Sunday for a 15% tariff on most EU goods exports to the United States, and a deal with Japan. That agreement has brought a measure of relief to the EU but also frustration and anger, with France denouncing the deal as a 'submission' and Germany, Europe's largest economy, also warning of 'significant' damage. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD China can exercise a degree of leverage with its grip on the global market for rare earths and magnets, used in everything from military hardware to car windshield wiper motors, analysts say. Unlike the EU, it also does not rely on the United States for security ties and can let trade talks play out for several more months, Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank, told Reuters. 'China is well aware of its strong negotiating position, as could clearly be seen in the temporary escalation observed in April,' he said. 'But over Europe always hangs the Damocles sword of the US withdrawing its security guarantee, and that is why the EU did not escalate the situation like China did.' Trump on Xi meeting The Financial Times reported on Monday that the United States had paused curbs on tech exports to China to avoid disrupting trade talks with Beijing and support Trump's efforts to secure a meeting with Xi this year. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Trump pushed back against suggestions he was seeking a meeting with Xi. 'This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything! I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest!' he wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. Previous US-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing US and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia's H20 AI chips, and other goods halted by the United States. Among broader economic issues, Washington complains that China's state-led, export-driven model is flooding world markets with cheap goods, while Beijing says US national security export controls on tech goods seek to stunt Chinese growth. Bessent has already flagged a deadline extension and has said he wants China to rebalance its economy away from exports to more domestic consumption – a decades-long goal for US policymakers. How AI is reshaping 700 US professions: Automation, augmentation, and what it means for the workforce

The growing role of AI in 700 US professions: Balancing automation and augmentation. (AI Image) Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into the workplace, impacting a wide range of professions across the US labor market. A recent study analyzing AI's effects on more than 700 occupations found that AI systems are already automating or augmenting about 25 percent of daily tasks performed in various jobs. This growing presence of AI raises questions about how work will change across industries and what it means for employees. Researchers from Anthropic , an AI company behind the assistant Claude, examined over one million text-based conversations with users at the end of 2024. Their dataset categorized tasks handled by AI as either automated—completed independently by AI—or augmented, where AI assists humans under supervision. This data provides a detailed view of AI's current role in reshaping job tasks in the US workforce. AI automates and augments different tasks across occupations The study found that AI impacts jobs differently depending on the profession. Automation occurs when AI performs tasks without human input, while augmentation requires human oversight and collaboration. On average, about 23 percent of tasks in computer and math-related jobs can be automated, reflecting the high capability of AI in technical roles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15+ Food That Unclog Arteries (Most People Ignore) Undo In contrast, educators and librarians experience the highest levels of augmentation, with 40 percent of their tasks potentially enhanced by AI tools. According to the Washington Post , the Anthropic research indicates that while automation may lead to lower wages and increased unemployment in some fields, augmentation tends to raise wages for more experienced workers and creates jobs in emerging areas. The researchers also pointed out limitations, noting that their analysis focuses solely on text-based AI interactions, possibly underestimating AI's influence in professions that rely heavily on image or video generation, such as fashion or interior design. Tech industry feels early impacts of AI The technology sector has already experienced significant changes due to AI integration. Approximately 56 percent of tasks within computer and math jobs are either automated or augmented, with a tendency towards automation. The Washington Post reports that AI systems now write more than a quarter of the code at companies like Microsoft and Google, and IBM has replaced several hundred human resources workers with AI applications. About 3.8 percent of the US labor force, or over 6 million people, work in tech. These positions have traditionally been well-paid and recession-resistant. However, the rapid advancement of AI is altering this landscape. The Washington Post quoted researchers emphasizing that although AI may create new job categories, such as AI security developers and ethics engineers, current trends indicate more layoffs than new hires in tech fields. Using AI for routine activities, research, and communication can help employees augment their work and increase productivity. The Washington Post advises individuals to stay informed about AI's strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations to prepare for ongoing changes. Anthropic's dataset highlights that AI's effects vary widely, and its long-term impact remains uncertain as technology evolves and regulations develop. By the end of 2024, AI's role in the workforce included automating or augmenting roughly one-quarter of daily tasks across occupations. While automation tends to reduce employment and wages in some areas, augmentation may offer benefits, especially for experienced workers in specific fields. As AI continues to advance, understanding its influence on job functions will be critical for workers and employers alike. The balance between automation and augmentation will likely shape the future of work in the US economy. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Ready to navigate global policies?
