Phillies Could Trade Top Prospect Justin Crawford Amid Questions Surrounding MLB Debut
Phillies Could Trade Top Prospect Justin Crawford Amid Questions Surrounding MLB Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One has to question what the Philadelphia Phillies are doing with outfielder Justin Crawford. All Crawford has done throughout his professional career is tear things up in the minors. Advertisement At some point, everybody is just wasting their time. However, some believe that Dave Dombrowski's decision not to call him up could be a signal of what's to come, including Zachary Rotman, who noted that because of the Phillies unwillingness to call Crawford up, it could signal that he's part of a trade deadline deal that the Phillies want to eventually make. "Dave Dombrowski, for whatever reason, has shied away from making the massive blockbuster he's been known for in other organizations, though," Rotman wrote. "Hopefully, this year will be different in that regard. In that vein, I'll predict the Phillies part with Justin Crawford at the deadline for the simple reason that they don't seem to believe in him enough to have given him a look by this point. Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski looks on from the stands in a game against the New York Yankees during spring training at BayCare Ballpark. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images "Crawford is one of their top prospects and he's torn up Triple-A this season, yet, despite their outfield play this season, they haven't given him the call. I get the concerns with his hit tool, but it's still surprising that he hasn't gotten a look. If they don't feel comfortable playing him in the majors at this point, they might as well see what they can get for him at the deadline." Advertisement The Phillies are expected to be aggressive at the deadline, and making somebody like Crawford available would help them accomplish that. Calling him up and proving that he can play at the highest level would only help that, but there's also a scenario where it could hurt. For the Phillies, they have to be careful, as they don't want to tank his value right before the deadline. Phillies' J.T. Realmuto Said Mick Abel Was 'Missing All Over the Place' in Latest Start
Phillies' J.T. Realmuto Said Mick Abel Was 'Missing All Over the Place' in Latest Start originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies and their fans thought they found another ace in their system when Mick Abel got off to an incredible start to his MLB career. But, there was some doubt after his latest outing against the San Diego Padres. Advertisement After the game, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto commented on Abel's rough outing. He gave a fair, but blunt, assessment of Abel after his roughest outing of his MLB career thus far. "He was kind of missing all over the place," Realmuto told Matt Gelb of The Athletic. "It's not easy. I mean, there's a lot of pressure in that situation." Abel couldn't command his pitches in his last outing. He walked one batter in the first inning, but walked four in the second, including three in a row to load the bases and walk in two runs. He then gave up a double, which put the Phillies in a 5-0 hole early, and ended his day after going just 1.2 innings. It was the worst start of his brief MLB tenure so far. He allowed the most runs and went the fewest innings of any start this season for Ael. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (10) throws a passed ball to first base for an out against the Houston Astros during the third inning at Daikin Williams-Imagn Images Whether it's due to batters stealing his pitches or Abel struggling to locate, it's been a rough couple of starts for the young righty. Realmuto has been in the league for a while, so he's no stranger to a pitcher struggling on the mound. Realmuto offered a different perspective, one of confidence, after Abel's latest outing. "He's done a great job for us," Realmuto said. "That's just part of the growing pains of being a young pitcher." The 23-year-old has a 5.04 ERA and a 202 record through his first six starts in the big leagues. It's been an up-and-down beginning of his career thus far, but he's shown flashes, enough to warrant more time invested in him. Advertisement If Abel can get back to his previous stuff, the Phillies could have another strong starter on the roster. But, for now, Abel will look to reset and rebound for his next start with Aaron Nola on the injured list and Andrew Painter in the minors. Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues
Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of baseball's best starting rotations. But, even with a strong rotation, one of the pitchers has been struggling lately. Ahead of their Fourth of July weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, the team made a roster move. Advertisement The Phillies announced that they have optioned starting pitcher Mick Abel down to Triple-A and brought up Seth Johnson to the Major League roster. Abel started strong but now heads back to the minor leagues after a rough stretch of starts. In his latest outing, he couldn't complete two innings. In his sixth game in the Majors, Abel went just 1.2 innings, allowing five earned runs against the San Diego Padres. He also gave up five walks and two hits, while striking out three. That was his worst start in the Majors, and one of his worst this season overall. He started hot, going six shutout innings in a pitchers' duel against Paul Skenes. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) walks off the field against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images But, after allowing nine earned runs over the last two starts in 4.2 innings of work, his ERA jumped to 5.04, and his numbers took a nosedive overall. The beginning was promising, but the last two starts were concerning. In his place, Johnson gets a longer-term spot on the Major League roster. He went two innings against the Padres, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner in his best outing in the Majors. The 26-year-old Johnson takes the 23-year-old Abel's place on the roster. It's a tough blow to the Phillies, as initially, Abel looked to be another star in the rotation. After this roster move from the Phillies, Abel will look to rekindle what he displayed at the beginning of his MLB career. After a strong start, Abel struggled and now needs a reset in the minor leagues.
