Zohran Mamdani defeats Andrew Cuomo in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary, advances to general election; could become first Muslim, Indian-American to hold post
NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani has officially secured victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, with a final vote count on Tuesday confirming his upset win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He now advances to the general election. Since Mamdani took a decisive lead following the polls closing a week ago and narrowly missed the 50 per cent of the vote required to prevent a second count under the city's ranked choice voting system, his victory had been anticipated, news agency Associated Press reported. If a voter's favorite candidate withdraws from the race, the method permits their alternative preferences to be taken into consideration. In the general election, Mamdani, who announced his victory on the evening of the June 24 primary, will compete against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and independent Jim Walden. On the evening of the primary on June 24, Cuomo admitted defeat, but he is still debating whether to run on an independent ticket in the general election. Mamdani, a democratic socialist who is 33 years old and a member of the state Assembly, was almost unknown when he ran for office with a daring list of populist policies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Glicemia acima de 100? Insira essa fruta na sua dieta Saúde Nacional Undo However, as the elder, more moderate Democrat attempted to recover from the sexual harassment crisis that forced his departure four years ago, he created a dynamic campaign that ran circles around Cuomo. The political world was rocked by the results even before they were confirmed. Mamdani's campaign, which aimed to reduce living expenses, says it has discovered a new path for Democrats who have occasionally seemed lost during President Donald Trump's ascent to power. The Democratic establishment has been cautious in its attitude to Mamdani. Although many of its major players praised his campaign, they don't appear prepared to fully support the young progressive. For some in the party, his previous criticisms of law enforcement, use of the word "genocide" to describe the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza, and designation as a "democratic socialist" are like landmines. Mamdani would be the first mayor of Indian American descent and the first Muslim in the city if elected. He would be among its youngest as well. Mamdani has already given Republicans a fresh line of attack. Ahead of important elections later this year and next, Trump and other GOP figures have started to take aim at Mamdani, portraying him as the pinnacle of socialist excess. According to Syracuse University political science professor Grant Reeher, "I want this guy to win if I'm a Republican." "Because I want to be able to compare and contrast my campaign as a Republican with the notion that the Democratic party is in this position in a national election." The ranked choice voting system in New York City enables voters to rank up to five candidates on their ballots. A candidate is declared the winner of the race if more than 50% of voters select them as their first choice. On the night of the primary, no candidate was able to clear that hurdle; therefore, the ranked-choice voting method took over. On July 15, the board is expected to certify the election. Since joining the state Assembly in 2021, Mamdani has described his lack of experience as a possible strength. In exchange for taxes on the wealthy, his campaign promised free city buses, free child care, government-run grocery shops, a rent freeze for rent-stabilized apartments, and more. His plan has been criticized for being politically unfeasible. Cuomo launched a campaign that focused on his wealth of experience, positioning himself as the one contender who could turn around a city that had gotten out of hand. He prioritized fighting antisemitism during the campaign and relied more on his well-known brand and successful fundraising effort than on engaging with voters. He denied any misconduct when confronted with the sexual harassment accusations that brought an end to his term as governor, arguing that the issue was motivated by politics and that voters were prepared to move on. Ahead of a procedural deadline to do so, Cuomo did not take his name off the November ballot last week. He has stated that he is still unsure about whether to run for government. Adams is an independent candidate in the November election, despite still being a Democrat. After being seriously hurt by his now-dismissed federal bribery case, he withdrew from the Democratic primary in April. In the days following Mamdani's declaration of victory, he rekindled his reelection campaign, despite having done little before. He referred to it as a contest between a candidate with a "blue collar" and one with a "silver spoon."

Zohran Mamdani clinches NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary in upset over Andrew Cuomo
Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and state assembly member, has officially won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo by a wide margin and shaking up the city's political establishment. The Associated Press called the race Tuesday after the Board of Elections released the results of the ranked choice vote tabulation. Mamdani finished 12 percentage points ahead of Cuomo. His win had been expected since he secured a commanding lead on June 24, but he fell just shy of the 50% threshold needed to avoid additional counting under the city's ranked choice voting system. 'I am so humbled by the faith New Yorkers have placed in our movement,' Mamdani said in a statement. 'This campaign was never about me—it was about building a city where working people come first.' Mamdani launched his campaign as a virtually unknown figure, while Cuomo leaned on decades of name recognition and his formidable fundraising machine. But Cuomo's comeback bid was hampered by the sexual harassment scandal that forced his resignation four years ago. Even before results were finalised, Mamdani's apparent victory stunned political observers. 'This is not the end of the race, but it is the start of a new era,' Mamdani declared on election night. Mamdani built his campaign around pledges to expand city services and rein in inequality: Free city buses Free child care A rent freeze for tenants in rent-stabilized apartments Government-run grocery stores Higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for it all Critics quickly labeled the proposals 'fantasy economics.' Cuomo repeatedly called Mamdani's agenda unrealistic, saying, 'New Yorkers deserve practical solutions, not pie-in-the-sky promises.' While some Democratic leaders have praised Mamdani's energy, many remain cautious. His criticisms of law enforcement, his use of the term 'genocide' to describe Israeli actions in Gaza, and his embrace of democratic socialism have become lightning rods. 'If I'm a Republican, I want this guy to win,' said Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University. 'Because I want to be able to compare and contrast my campaign to the idea that 'this is where the Democratic Party is.'' Mamdani will now face a crowded general election that includes: Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent after dropping out of the Democratic primary amid a now-dismissed bribery case. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Independent candidate Jim Walden. Mamdani's upset is already being hailed by progressives as proof that a bold populist platform can win in the nation's largest city. 'Zohran has shown that you can run on a vision that inspires people, not just on fear,' said City Council Member Tiffany Cabán, a progressive ally. Still, Republicans wasted no time seizing on the result as evidence Democrats are veering too far left. 'This is the socialist takeover of New York City,' Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said in a statement. The city's Board of Elections is scheduled to certify the final results by July 15. In the meantime, Mamdani said his team is preparing for an intense general election campaign: 'The work isn't over,' he told supporters. 'The stakes are too high to let up now.' State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein has defeated former US Representative Anthony Weiner in the Democratic primary for a New York City Council seat representing lower Manhattan, blocking Weiner's attempt to return to public office after years of scandal. The primary election concluded on June 24, but the race remained undecided until Tuesday, when the city's Board of Elections released the ranked choice voting results confirming Epstein as the winner. He now advances to the general election this fall. Epstein, a former tenant organizer and lawyer who has served in the state Assembly since 2018, thanked voters for their confidence. 'This campaign was about delivering real results for working New Yorkers,' Epstein said in a statement. 'I'm honored to have earned this mandate.' Weiner, once a prominent Democratic voice in Congress, entered the race in hopes of reviving his political career, which collapsed more than a decade ago under the weight of sexting scandals. He resigned from Congress in 2011 after sending explicit images to a college student, and his subsequent mayoral bid was derailed by revelations he had continued the behavior. In 2017, he pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a 15-year-old girl and served prison time. While campaigning, Weiner did not avoid questions about his past. 'I've struggled with how to talk to voters about what I did,' Weiner told The Associated Press earlier this year. 'But I also believe in second chances.' Ultimately, he finished far behind Epstein and other contenders in the field. Epstein now heads to the November general election, where he will face Republican and third-party challengers. He pledged to focus on affordable housing, tenant protections, and rebuilding trust in local government. 'This campaign has been about standing up for our communities,' Epstein said Tuesday night. 'That work continues.'

Netanyahu wants to end Gaza war, says Trump, hints at deal next week: ‘Will be firm with him'
United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, July 1, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was keen on ending the war with Gaza. Ahead of his meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump hinted that a deal to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza maybe settled upon next week. Donald Trump also asserted that he is going to be 'very firm' with Netanyahu in ending the Gaza war. The US President also said he will discuss the situation in Iran when he meets with Netanyahu at the White House next week. A senior Israeli official, Ron Dermer, has been in Washington this week holding talks ahead of the meeting. A senior White House official said, 'Ron Dermer visits the White House regularly. This will continue as President Trump pursues a path to peace for Israel and Gaza.' 'We hope it [ceasefire] is going to happen. And we're looking forward to it happening sometime next week,' Donald Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for a day trip to Florida. 'We want to get the hostages out.' Meanwhile, Hamas said it was willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war. Israel, on the other hand, has maintained that the war can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. The Israeli war on Palestine started when Hamas militants stormed the Israeli territory in a multi-front attack on October 7, 2023. The militants killed hundreds, taking hostages back into Gaza. Israel, in response, has since bombed Palestine, killing hundreds. The assault has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court.
