World's biggest poultry exporter Brazil confirms bird flu outbreak
Brazil exported $10 billion of chicken meat in 2024, accounting for about 35 percent of global trade. Much of that came from meat processors BRF and JBS, which ship to some 150 countries.
China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE, are among the main destinations for Brazil's chicken exports.
Brazil's Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro said on Friday China had banned poulty imports from the country for 60 days, but that Brazilian chicken in transit to other countries would not face problems.
Chinese customs did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside business hours.
The outbreak occurred in the city of Montenegro in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, the Agriculture Ministry said. The state accounts for 15 percent of Brazilian poultry production and exports, national pork and poultry group ABPA said in July 2024.
BRF had five processing plants operating in the state as of May 2024. JBS has also invested in chicken processing plants in Rio Grande do Sul under its Seara brand.
The veterinary officials have begun isolating the area of the outbreak in Montenegro and culling the remaining birds, in line with protocol, the state agricultural secretariat said.
'A complementary investigation will be carried out within an initial radius of 10 km (6 miles) from the area where the outbreak occurred, and into possible links with other properties,' the secretariat said.
The ministry also said it was acting to contain and eradicate the outbreak, officially notifying the World Organization for Animal Health, Brazil's trade partners and other interested parties.
'All necessary measures to control the situation were quickly adopted, and the situation is under control and being monitored by government agencies,' industry group ABPA said in a statement.
Asked for a company response, JBS deferred to ABPA.
Miguel Gularte, CEO of BRF, told a call with analysts he was confident Brazilian health protocols were robust and 'this episode' would be quickly overcome.
Since 2022, bird flu has swept through the US poultry industry, killing around 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds, severely affecting production of meat and eggs.
Bird flu has also infected nearly 70 people in the US, with one death, since 2024. Most of those infections have been among farmworkers exposed to infected poultry or cows.
The further spread of the disease raises the risk that bird flu could become more transmissible to humans.
Brazil, which exported more than 5 million metric tons of chicken products last year, first confirmed outbreaks of the highly pathogenic avian flu among wild birds in May 2023 in at least seven states.
The disease is not transmitted through the consumption of poultry meat or eggs, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement.
'The Brazilian and world population can rest assured about the safety of inspected products, and there are no restrictions on their consumption,' the ministry said.

China detains principal after over 200 children sick with lead poisoning
A kindergarten principal was detained after more than 200 children in northwestern China fell ill with potential lead poisoning from date cakes and corn rolls, state media said on Tuesday. Investigators found 'abnormal' levels of lead in the blood of 233 children at Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui city, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Of those, 201 of the children are being treated in hospital. The cake, served at breakfast, returned a reading of 1,052 milligrams per kilogram and the roll, served at another meal, was found with 1,340 milligrams per kilogram. The nationwide limit for lead in wheat and starch is 0.5 milligrams per kilogram, according to Chinese government records. CCTV said security footage shows kitchen staff adding packaged yellow colouring to a flour mix used in both contaminated dishes. The kindergarten's principal, surnamed Zhu, and an investor surnamed Li have been detained along with six other people, CCTV said. Two others are on 'bail pending trial'. Investigators found that Zhu and Li allowed kitchen staff to produce food using paint pigments purchased online that were later found to contain lead and were marked inedible. Testing among children attending other kindergartens linked with Peixin returned normal results. Food safety standards have generally improved across China but revelations last year that cooking oil had been transported in containers also used to carry fuel sparked outrage across Chinese social media.

Chinese kindergarten investigated after children found to have high lead levels, state media says
HONG KONG: Chinese authorities have arrested eight people after more than 200 children who fell ill in the northwestern province of Gansu were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, the country's state broadcaster reported on Tuesday. The children attended a privately owned kindergarten in Gansu's Tianshui, which was set up in 2022, and had 251 children enrolled, the broadcaster, CCTV, said. Investigations had found lead in food served to students, it said. Online media outlets Jimu and The Cover, citing parents, said students' symptoms included stomach and leg pain, loss of appetite and hair loss. CCTV said authorities were still investigating the kindergarten's staff, including its principal and legal representative. Reuters was not able to establish contact details for the school or verify the information independently. Food safety has improved in China following a series of scandals, including the 2008 discovery of toxic infant milk, which undermined public trust and consumer confidence. Inspections by regulators in 2022 found safety issues were more common in the catering industry and agricultural products, according to state media reports. Nanoemulsion Form of Vitamin D3 Could Improve Core Manifestations of Autism
A recent clinical study conducted in China suggests promising results for a vitamin D3-loaded nanoemulsion in improving the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. In the study, published on Friday by the LabMed Discovery magazine, researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University explained that while traditional vitamin D3 supplementation has shown mixed results in past studies, a nanoemulsion form-engineered to enhance absorption and bioavailability- might produce better outcomes. ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. It is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, along with restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. ASD symptoms become apparent during early childhood, typically within the first three years of life. Nanoemulsion Form of Vitamin D3 Therefore, the Chinese study focused on a nanoemulsion form of vitamin D3, which is specifically designed to improve how well the body absorbs and utilizes the nutrient, potentially leading to more effective outcomes. The study involved 80 children with confirmed ASD diagnoses, all between 3 and 6 years old. The children were randomly split into two groups: one group received the nanoemulsion version of vitamin D3, while the other group was given a commonly available standard supplement. Both groups followed their respective treatments for a six-month period. Their vitamin D3 levels, adaptive behaviors, and language abilities were assessed before and after supplementation. Only the nanoemulsion group showed statistically significant improvements in vitamin D3 levels, autism severity, social IQ, and both receptive and expressive language performance. The conventional supplement, despite raising blood vitamin D3 levels, did not lead to meaningful improvements in behavioral outcomes. The study concludes that the nanoemulsion form of vitamin D3 is superior to the conventional oral form in terms of increasing vitamin bioavailability and producing clinically relevant improvements in children with ASD. The authors of the study suggested that nanoemulsion technology could offer a valuable strategy for enhancing the effectiveness of nutritional interventions in neurodevelopmental disorders.
