
Kraft Heinz to remove artificial dyes from U.S. products by end of 2027
The company said in a release that about 10% of its U.S. items use FD&C colors, the synthetic additives that make many foods more visually appealing. Kraft Heinz brands that sell products with these dyes include Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, MiO, Jell-O and Jet-Puffed, according to a Kraft Heinz spokesperson.
The company removed artificial colors, preservatives and flavors from its Kraft macaroni and cheese in 2016 and its Heinz ketchup has never used artificial dyes, according to Pedro Navio, North America president at Kraft Heinz. It is unclear how removing the dyes will affect the company's business, as consumers could perceive the products as healthier but also may be less drawn to duller colors.
The decision follows pressure from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services, led by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., for the food industry to pull back on artificial dyes as part of a larger so-called Make America Healthy Again platform.
The FDA in April announced a plan to phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of next year and replace them with natural alternatives. Besides the previously banned Red No. 3, other dyes that will be eliminated include red dye 40, yellow dye 5, yellow dye 6, blue dye 1, blue dye 2 and green dye 2, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said at the time.
Kennedy said at the time that the FDA and the food industry have 'an understanding,' not a formal agreement, to remove artificial dyes. The Health and Human Services secretary discussed removing artificial food dyes during a meeting in March with top food executives from companies including Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo North America, General Mills, WK Kellogg, Tyson Foods, J.M. Smucker and the Consumer Brands Association, the industry's top trade group.
A spokesperson for Kraft Heinz said on Tuesday that the company looks forward to partnering with the administration 'to provide quality, affordable, and wholesome food for all.'
Momentum against food dyes had been building for years. In January, before President Donald Trump and Kennedy took office, the FDA announced a ban on the use of Red No. 3 dye in food and ingested drugs. The dye gives many candies and cereals their bright red color, but is also known to cause cancer in laboratory animals. The FDA allowed Red No. 3 to be used by food manufacturers for years, though the state of California had already banned the dye in 2023.
Kraft Heinz said in the release Tuesday that it has made more than 1,000 recipe changes over the past five years to improve product nutrition.
'The vast majority of our products use natural or no colors, and we've been on a journey to reduce our use of FD&C colors across the remainder of our portfolio,' Navio said. 'Above all, we are focused on providing nutritious, affordable and great-tasting food for Americans and this is a privilege we don't take lightly.'

Covid strain in the UK could cause new 'wave of infection'
The XFG strain of Covid, known as Stratus, has quickly become one of the most dominant variants in the UK. An expert has warned that a new variant of Covid could cause another 'wave of infection'. The XFG variants, which are also known as 'Stratus', have already become the most dominant variant in the UK. The most recent figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicate that the XFG strain, known as Stratus, is swiftly proliferating across England, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) alerting to its "rapidly growing" presence worldwide. As of May, the Stratus variant constituted 10 per cent of Covid-19 cases in England. Presently, the XFG and its derivative, XFG.3, are responsible for approximately 40 per cent of infections, according to UKHSA statistics. In the period spanning May 26 to June 8, 28.9 per cent of cases were identified as the XFG. 3 variant, while 11.4 per cent were attributed to XFG. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, both belong to the Stratus family, with XFG being the original and XFG. 3 its offshoot. Dr Alex Allen, consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: "It is normal for viruses to mutate and change over time. UKHSA is monitoring all available data relating to SARS-CoV-2 variants in the UK and abroad, and we continue to publish our findings in our regular Flu and COVID-19 surveillance reports. "Based on the available information so far, there is no evidence to suggest that the XFG and XFG.3 variants cause more severe disease than previous variants, or that the vaccines in current use will be less effective against them." This update follows closely on the heels of the WHO's disclosure of a new "more transmissible" variant named Nimbus, or NB. 1.8.1, which is also under observation. The latest figures indicate that the Nimbus strain of Covid is on a downward trend in the UK, now accounting for just 7.19 per cent of cases in England under classification NB. 1.8.1. The Stratus variant has surpassed Nimbus to become the most prevalent variant in England. Virologist Professor Lawrence Young of Warwick University revealed to MailOnline the worrying rise of the Stratus variant and its forms XFG and XFG. 3: "The increased competitiveness of XFG and XFG.3 is likely due to new spike mutations which make these variants more able to evade the immune response." He sounded an alarm over waning immunity among the public, as a result of declining uptake of the spring booster vaccination and receding Covid infection numbers recently. Prof Young warned: "This could lead to a new wave of infection but it's difficult to predict the extent of this wave." Expressing concerns about the behaviour of the Stratus variant to Cosmopolitan UK, Dr Kaywaan Khan, Harley Street GP and Founder of Hannah London Clinic, said: "Unlike other variants, Stratus has certain mutations in the spike protein which could help it evade antibodies developed from prior infections or vaccinations." Dr Khan described the Stratus strain as an offshoot of the Omicron variant, known for its high transmissibility and first detected in November 2021. As we look at the situation in May 2025, reports show that XFG constitutes roughly 25 per cent of the global Covid case count. Dr Khan remarked: "Despite this, it is important to mention that Stratus seems to be no worse than earlier Omicron variants in terms of illness, hospitalisations, or deaths." The World Health Organisation (WHO) has cautioned that the XFG strain is proliferating swiftly on a global scale. The organisation reported that cases surged within a month, from accounting for seven per cent of worldwide instances to reaching 23 per cent as of June 1. Nevertheless, WHO has evaluated the threat level of this variant as "low". It maintains that there is no current evidence indicating that XFG presents additional health risks relative to prior variants of the virus. Symptoms The most recent COVID-19 variants, frequently casually referred to as "Frankenstein" variants, usually present with symptoms akin to previous Omicron subvariants. Such symptoms commonly include upper respiratory tract problems such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and sneezing. Further symptoms like fatigue, headache, muscle pains, and decreased appetite are typically reported as well. It's worth mentioning that the once distinctive symptom of loss of smell or taste appears to be less prevalent with Omicron infections.

Heinz recalls contaminated packaged turkey bacon amid 4th of July
Officials are asking consumers to throw away this Independence Day staple over fears it may be contaminated with listeria. Kraft Heinz Foods Company and the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a recall for about 367,812 pounds of packaged turkey bacon. The affected products include Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Original 12oz, Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon 36 oz (3-12 oz packs) and Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Original 48 oz (4-12oz). According to the USDA, the products are believed to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes - a bacteria capable of causing serious infections in humans. While a listeria infection usually causes mild fever, headache and diarrhea in most people, it can be deadly for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weak immune systems. These items were shipped to multiple retail locations nationwide including Target and some were even exported to the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong. As of now, no reports of illness caused by the infected products have been reported by officials and consumers have been asked to either discard the packages or return them to the store of purchase. Officials noted that the 12oz package has use-by dates from July 18 to August 2, 2025 with UPC 071871548601; 36oz packages have use-by dates from July 23 to September 4, 2025 with UPC 071871548748; and 48oz packages have use-by dates from July 18 to September 4, 2025 with UPC 071871548793. A Kraft Heinz spokesperson said in an official statement: 'At Kraft Heinz, nothing matters more to us than the safety of our products and the well-being of the families who trust them. In line with our safety protocols, we are actively working with all retail partners and distributors to remove the potentially impacted product from circulation.' People can become infected with listeria from contaminated food items such as seafood, deli meats, hot dogs, unpasteurized fruit juices, soft cheeses and sprouts. In this case, it is possible that the turkey bacon may have become contaminated with the bacteria through poor hygiene during processing, contact with contaminated surfaces during packaging or even through mishandling during transportation. The bacteria can survive the stomach acid and travel to the intestine, from which they may migrate into the bloodstream. Most healthy adults will start to feel sick within a couple of days of consuming contaminated food. It usually starts with flu-like symptoms - a fever, muscle aches or nausea - before progressing to vomiting and diarrhea. Some people begin to feel sick weeks or months after the initial infection. This is because listeria can go dormant when faced with environmental stress, such as in water without nutrients or in the presence of detergents. It can also spread to the central nervous system and cause a stiff neck, seizures, confusion and a loss of balance. In the most severe cases, listeria can lead to meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord or pus buildup in the brain which can be deadly to human life. However, pregnant woman may have mild or no symptoms but can still pass the infection to the fetus, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Babies born with a listeria infection can have developmental delays, develop blindness, paralysis and may even face organ failure - which could lead to death. Every year, about 1,600 people Americans end up with listeria out of which nearly 300 die from the infection. Treatment for listeria infections usually includes taking antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole and ampicillin. Officials claim that the contamination was discovered after it was tested for bacteria in a Kraft Heinz lab. Experts warn Stratus could be more infectious than previous Covid variants, as it has mutations that help the virus dodge our immune system's defences. Known scientifically as XFG, is what is known as a Frankenstein or "recombinant" strain - when a person gets infected with two Covid strains at once that combine to become a new hybrid variant. Two versions of Stratus are currently in circulation: XFG and a spin-off XFG. 3. Prof Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, told MailOnline both are "rapidly spreading". "The increased competitiveness of XFG and XFG.3 is likely due to new spike mutations which make these variants more able to evade the immune response," he said. "Given that immunity to Covid is waning in the population due to a decline in uptake of the spring booster jab and the reduction of Covid infections in recent months, more people will be susceptible to infection with XFG and XFG.3. "This could lead to a new wave of infection but it's difficult to predict the extent of this wave." UKHSA wrote in its recent report: "In sequenced [Covid-19] samples, the most prevalent lineages were XFG and its sub-lineages." But it's worth noting that the report showed overall Covid cases falling compared to recent weeks. Is little-known hMPV virus ravaging China the NEW Covid? The World Health Organisation (WHO) also announced it was keeping an eye on Stratus. In a recent report, it designated it as a "variant under monitoring with increasing proportions globally", now accounting for 22 per cent of cases recorded across the world. The health watchdog estimated it would likely become the dominant global strain soon. Stratus is a combination of the LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 Covid variants. What to do if you get Covid Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor, advised the best things to do if you test positive for Covid - as well as how to best protect yourself: "If you test positive or have symptoms consistent with Covid, the advice remains to stay at home if you can, rest, stay hydrated, and avoid contact with others — particularly those who are vulnerable. "You don't need to inform your GP unless you're in a high-risk group or your symptoms worsen. "Lateral flow tests can still be useful, and some people may qualify for antiviral treatment, so do check the latest NHS guidance if you're unsure. "To prevent getting Covid, good hygiene practices go a long way - regular hand washing, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with others if you're feeling unwell. "If you're eligible for a Covid booster, it's a good idea to take it. Ventilating indoor spaces and wearing masks in crowded settings can also help reduce the risk. "It's all about layering protection, especially during periods when cases are on the rise." When comparing Stratus to the previously dominant JN1 variant, the WHO said 'distinct mutational profiles in the spike protein can be identified". The variant may better at evading our immune defences, it suggested. But WHO officials noted: "Considering the available evidence, the additional public health risk posed by XFG is evaluated as low at the global level. "Currently approved COVID-19 vaccines are expected to remain effective to this variant against symptomatic and severe disease." Stratus symptoms By now, we're all familiar with common Covid symptoms, such as a high temperature, coughing, loss of taste or smell and shortness of breath. Experts say Stratus could be causing a telltale symptom that differs from other variants. Dr Kaywaan Khan, Harley Street GP and Founder of Hannah London Clinic, told Cosmopolitan UK: 'One of the most noticeable symptoms of the Stratus variant is hoarseness, which includes a scratchy or raspy voice. 'Though the symptoms manifest differently and vary from person to person, the symptoms of Stratus tend to be mild to moderate. 'Regardless of whether the symptoms mimic a cold or flu, testing continues to be the critical step in eliminating the possibility of a coronavirus infection.'
