Battle of Perth suburbs to claim AC/DC lead singer as own

Perth Now17-07-2025
A Perth council is setting off down the highway to hell with plans to honour legendary AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott.
Fremantle is considered by many to be the spiritual home of Scott, but its neighbour the City of Melville is planning its own tribute to him.
The Melville council voted 7-2 in favour of a proposal from deputy mayor Karen Wheatland at its July 15 meeting that the city look for suitable locations for a permanent tribute to Scott, such as naming a landmark after him — such as 'Bon Scott Boulevard' — as part of its tourism plan.
Local schools, artists, musicians and heritage groups will be invited to help.
AC/DC and its management will also be invited to visit the City of Melville during its tour later this year. The band, pictired with late vocalist Bon Scott (second from left). Getty Credit: View
Melville's claim to Scott is that he spent part of his youth there and was laid to rest in 1980 at the Fremantle Cemetery in Palmyra, which is technically part of Melville — not Fremantle.
Canning Highway was also the inspiration to the rock classic Highway to Hell, with the song alluding to the string of pubs littered along this stretch of road including the Raffles and Leopold hotels — also within the City of Melville boundaries.
The song was brought to life in March 2020 with the Highway to Hell event, which turned 10km of Canning Highway from Canning Bridge to the Fremantle Traffic Bridge into the world's longest stage to mark the 40th anniversary of Scott's death.
The City of Melville partnered with Perth Festival, the City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle to present the event.

The singer attended North Fremantle Primary School and John Curtin Senior High School, learning to play the drums with the Fremantle Scots Pipe Band.
Cr Wheatland said she wanted to honour Scott's connection to the City of Melville and put it on the map as the place where Scott's story 'truly began.'
Her original motion said Scott lived in Palmyra but this was removed after doubts were raised about it.
'It doesn't matter whether he lived in Palmyra or Melville, but the thing is certain that the City of Melville has certainly been a part of his legacy,' she said.
'The last time AC/DC came to Perth, I went to his grave before the concert just to see if the band might go there to say hi, to pay their respects to Bon and have a Jack Daniels. And mate, it was packed. The Bon Scott statue at Fishing Boat Harbour. Credit: Andrew Ritchie / Community News
'(Fans) leave flowers, lyrics, guitar picks, hats, underwear. Some even make the pilgrimage as a form of a personal tribute.
'And yet, for all this interest, we've done very little as a city and a local government, apart from Highway to Hell, which was incredible, to embrace it or reflect that legacy back to our community.
'We're not claiming Bon Scott. We're acknowledging that his story ends in our care.'
Cr Jennifer Spanbroek opposed the motion as there was already a tribute to Scott near the Canning Bridge and it would be stepping on the toes of the City of Fremantle.
'The reason we haven't done much is we all know that Fremantle do celebrate Bon Scott,' she said.
'There's nothing stopping the City of Melville contacting the City of Fremantle and to actually see if they can do anything to work with them in a collaborative manner when they (AC/DC) do come in December.
'I just think that it puts more more and more time and effort into the city officers and it's taking them away from a lot of other lot of other duties that they've already got.'
Cr Scott Green said Scott's grave could rival that of Doors lead singer Jim Morrison's in Paris.
'Bon Scott is probably as big if not bigger than Jim Morrison,' he said.
He also hoped to get AC/DC to perform on the back of a truck down Canning Highway.

Ozzy Osbourne's heartbreaking final text to his close pal revealed

Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Ozzy Osbourne's longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde revealed the poignant final text message he received from the late metal icon after Black Sabbath's farewell concert. 'The last text I got from Oz was saying, 'Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn't see you.' He goes, 'Thanks for everything,'' Wylde told Guitar World in an interview published Tuesday. 'It was just us talking, saying, 'I love you, buddy.' That was it.' Wylde divulged in the interview that he had expected to see Osbourne — who died on July 22 at age 76 — at some point following Black Sabbath's farewell concert in Birmingham, England, on July 5. But that never happened. Jack Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne leave after viewing tributes to the late Ozzy Osbourne from fans. Picture: Getty. The guitarist — who joined Black Sabbath in 1987 — explained that he wanted to give the Prince of Darkness a reprieve from the chaos backstage after the show. 'Everybody and their mother were in the backstage dressing room and I just wanted to give him a break,' Wylde said, noting elsewhere in the interview that their priority was 'making sure that Oz was OK.' 'It was definitely pretty amazing. Seeing Oz onstage when Sabbath got done, that's the last time I saw him,' Wylde recalled. Wylde, 58, also shared how the Black Sabbath frontman was like family to him. 'Oz was just the best. I have my father, who was a World War II veteran; and then Ozzy, who was almost like an older brother,' the guitarist told the outlet. 'There was almost a 20-year age gap between us. With our relationship, there was the fun drinking – but if I ever needed advice, I could talk to him.' Osbourne died at 76 years-old. Picture: Getty. The families were so close, in fact, that Osbourne was given a special title. 'Ozzy is the godfather of our oldest son,' Wylde said. 'Whether I was playing with him or not, if Sharon called me and my wife up and said, 'Guys, can you watch the house while we're away on a business trip?' I'd do it. It's like, 'If you need me to bring milk and eggs over, I'll do it.'' The legendary rocker died last week after battling Parkinson's disease and the effects of a 2003 quad bike accident. Ozzy's wife, Sharon Osbourne, and children announced his death in a statement obtained by Page Six. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' they said. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.' Ozzy was honoured with a funeral procession in Birmingham, England, on Wednesday. Iconic talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael shared rare photos amid her retirement, and looked nearly unrecognisable from her network television days. In one Instagram photo shared over the weekend, the former Sally host rocked bright red hair, a black and white sundress and a green scarf as she enjoyed a breezy boat ride. She captioned the post with a nod to her 'Raphaelites,' adding that she's 'serving you sailboat vibes.' In two additional pics, the TV host, 90, pulled her fiery red locks into a ponytail and donned a tie-dye T-shirt while lounging at the end of a dock. In yet another, the Daytime Emmy Award winner snacked on oysters during a getaway. 'In New England enjoying some oysters … aren't these supposed to be an aphrodisiac?!' she joked in the caption. In February, the TV star shared a snap of herself living her best life in Paris while leaning out a window to check out the City of Lights. Raphael opened up to People in March about turning 90 following a highly visible career in television. She's still living her best life – and sharing it all on Instagram. Sally Jessy's tip for ageing: 'If you dye your hair, people say you look young.' 'It's really interesting being 90 because if you dye your hair and you don't have any veins in your legs, then people say you look young,' she told the outlet. 'And that's always nice that people say, although why they think looking young when you can claim 90 is beyond me, but they think it's a compliment.' She also reflected on the benefits of being in her senior years. 'You're cute when you're young, and then for a long time, you're not cute,' she said. 'And then when you get to be 80 or 90, you're cute again. People always say, 'That cute old lady,' so I guess I'm cute again.' Kelley Wolf's son reacts to 'insane' video after she tried to enter family home

Scott and Kelley Wolf's son Jackson has called his mother's actions 'insane' after she tried to enter the family home. Kelly and Scott - who share Jackson, 16, Miller, 12, and 11-year-old Lucy together - split last month after more than 20 years of marriage, with Scott granted sole custody of the kids and exclusive use of their Park City home. However, Kelley took to Instagram to document herself trying to gain access to the home, with police present, in order to 'retrieve some basic items'. She told her Instagram followers: 'I'm currently about to meet up with a deputy of Summit County who's going to escort me into my home so I can get some money that I have saved. I have just had enough... I'm sick of being treated like I'm crazy. 'I have a sassy attitude, my God, but being called things like grandiose, bipolar, schizophrenic, crazy, being banned from places I've been forever is just rude, honestly. 'I have to now prove myself and [I] did nothing except ask for a divorce. I'm sure y'all have seen this before, but wrong lady, because I don't back down. 'My dad taught me [to] keep cash. You know, just keep cash. And since I now owe a lot of lovely people a lot of money back, I've never asked for $1 in my life. 'I just want to get a few things… I tried to do this as peacefully [possible]. I've called you guys eight times in January saying I didn't feel safe, but [Scott] beat me to the punch. Apparently, I tried to file, but if somebody files before you, they can do a lot of weird stuff. 'We're both famous, just that's the part that sucks. It's embarrassing.' Jackson publicly reacted to the post, commenting: 'This is insane mom what are you doing.' A spokesperson for the Summit County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they responded to a 'keep the peace' call on the morning of July 29. The spokesperson told PEOPLE: 'The original call came in at 7:53 in the morning. The deputy did not meet with them at the residence until 9:45, and the deputy advised that the complainant had left the scene at 11:34. "It appeared that the locks on the house had been changed. [Kelley] made some phone calls to family, had some conversations with family [but] still wasn't able to gain access into the house and ultimately left. "We didn't have any contact with anyone [who might have been at the residence]. But we were never inside either. We wouldn't know definitively, but we have no reason to believe that there was anyone there. "The complainant did mention that there was a court order in place. As a standard procedure in these types of cases, our deputy did search for any types of orders that would bar or prohibit the complainant from being at the residence, and they were unable to locate any existing orders." Scott and Kelley recently reached a temporary agreement which set out provisions around custody, visitation, finances, and communication, with the Party of Five actor's temporary restraining order against his estranged wife also dismissed. According to the agreement, neither party is permitted to discuss adult issues, the divorce, or the kids' relationship with their other parent in front of or with the children, and Scott and Kelley are also barred from making disparaging remarks, either verbally or in writing, and cannot interrogate their brood about what happens when they are with their other parent. The agreement also includes a social media stipulation, which means neither may post about one another, their marriage, children or the divorce, nor allow any third party to do so.
