Epsom debutant Jackknife looks smart prospect in the making
Varian said: 'I'm delighted and I'm pleased to have a winner for Sheikh Fahad and the Qatar Racing team. We've always liked him and we liked him last year, but he had a little setback and never saw the racecourse.

'He's by Kameko who is Sheikh Fahad's stallion and he is a half-brother to Defoe who is a very dear horse to us and won the Coronation Cup, so we feel quite linked-in to the horse on pedigree anyway.'
Jackknife travelled stylishly throughout in the hands of his jockey Oisin Murphy, impressing his Carlburg Stables handler in the process, with Varian now able to sit and ponder future options.
Varian added: 'It was a good debut and he travelled nicely and moved into it well. For an unraced horse around the contours of Epsom, he did well to defy that and win and I really liked how he travelled into the race, you were drawn to him two furlongs out and that is often a good sign.

'We've liked him this spring. Oisin sat on him last week and thought he was ready to get started and we're very pleased with how he's handled the track. He's a very well-balanced horse and the ground was lovely, as it is always is at this meeting.
'We're delighted, but we'll see how he comes out of the race and how he is before we make any big plans. I'm sure he will have learned plenty and hopefully he is OK in the morning and then we can think what we can do with him, but hopefully he is a nice horse for the summer.'
Also on the card, David Menuisier was thrilled to see 9-4 favourite City Of Delight follow up a recent Doncaster win in the Lilley Plummer Risks City & Suburban Handicap.

'I'm glad, because before I decided to go to Doncaster, it was always may plan to run in the City & Suburban so I'm delighted he's gone and won both,' said Menuisier, who was winning the race for the second time in four years.
'He's gone and done it in style as well and at one stage he never looked like getting up, but then when he hit the rising ground he found another gear and won quite well at the end.
'Fingers crossed this isn't the end of his winning and with a bit more improvement he could be a horse with black-type potential.'
Menuisier was, however, out of luck in the following Weatherbys Global Stallions App Great Metropolitan Handicap, as his 3-1 favourite Master Builder had to play second best to Dylan Cunha's Asgard's Captain who landed the spoils at 13-2.

He then finished a very creditable fifth in the Arc de Triomphe on his next run, going down just over three lengths to unbeaten superstar Ace Impact. There was another Group 3 win for Continuous in the 2024 season but, on his most recent three starts, he has been sent off 50-1, 66-1 and 100-1. Continuous was never ridden to seriously contend the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last month. Wayne Lordan rousted him along to the front at a mad pace after he was slowly away - paving the way for eventual winner and stablemate Los Angeles. Continuous was again sent on to do all the running under Derby hero Lordan in the Coronation Cup at Epsom earlier this month. Both Ballydoyle horses flopped in the race won by John & Thady Gosden's 7-1 Ombudsman. Los Angeles is now set to miss all the big races over the summer due to the 'balls up'. But while he will be back with the aim of winning the Arc in October, Continuous' odds for upcoming contests suggest victory of any kind would be a miracle, despite the five-year-old gelding's multiple entries. He is in the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July meeting in a fortnight's time but is 20-1. He could run nine days later in the Curragh Cup - and does have an entry in the King George at Ascot but is 100-1 for that the following week. While O'Brien did include him in the Goodwood Cup at the end of July he is also 100-1 there and would surely be used as a pacemaker again for Gold Cup second and 7-4 ante-post favourite Illinois. One punter who watched Continuous at Ascot wrote on X: "Something very disappointing seeing a horse like Continuous being used as a pacemaker this season! "With his pedigree and fine race record he really could have been a fine horse to stand at stud. Crazy what he's being used for nowadays." Respected racing journalist Alistair Jones was another to notice the tactics and in the Racing Post wrote how Continuous was now a 'sorry sight' on the racecourse. He wrote: "He has sacrificed his last three races for the benefit of others in the yard and it was a sorry sight to see such a talented individual trail home tailed off in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes." O'Brien expecting Illinois progress after Gold Cup defeat
Less than a month ago the Ballydoyle handler expected to be saddling dual Gold Cup hero Kyprios in his bid for a 10th victory in the two-and-a-half-mile feature, but the recurrence of an old injury and his star stayer's subsequent retirement left O'Brien with no option but to shuffle his pack. Illinois looked bound for the Coronation Cup at Epsom following his winning reappearance in Chester's Ormonde Stakes, but Jan Brueghel successfully stepped in to fill that void, meaning Illinois was asked to run over a full mile further in Berkshire and he found Kyprios' old rival Trawlerman too strong. O'Brien said: 'We thought Illinois would be a Gold Cup horse next year and obviously the plan was Kyprios would come here this year and Illinois would step up next year. 'The plan was for him to go to the Coronation and I was training him as a good mile-and-a-half horse, and then when Kyprios retired we switched him to this race. 'We have to be happy with the run and he had a lovely preparation the last day. Maybe if we knew he was coming here straight away, we might of had him going earlier and maybe lighter.' While Illinois was seemingly put in his place by Trawlerman, O'Brien would not shirk a potential rematch in the Goodwood Cup, adding: 'He might go to Goodwood and meet this horse again and I would imagine he will progress again then. 'He got tired at the two-furlong pole today, like a lot of horses do, and we will see if we can improve him another little bit for this distance. 'It shows how good Kyprios was as Trawlerman had been second to him a couple of times, I think.' Illinois was beaten seven lengths by Trawlerman and was a further seven lengths clear of Saeed bin Suroor's Dubai Future in third. 'He did well and he stayed. I put a hood and cheekpieces on him which made him nice and relaxed in the race,' said bin Suroor. 'James (McDonald) gave him a good ride and he's tough – he's a horse who at nine years old is still young at heart. He's doing really well and we are very happy with him. 'I think we will go to Goodwood next. The winner is a good horse, but I am pleased with my horse's run.' The disappointment of the race was perhaps French raider Candelari, who had won four of his five previous starts for Francis Henri-Graffard but was a well-beaten sixth on this occasion. Graffard said: 'He was travelling nicely when the pace was fine but when the winner started to quicken and upped the pace, my horse was quite surprised. 'To come here in this type of race, they need the experience. In France they don't learn an awful lot as they crawl in races then sprint. This horse has a great turn of foot but he can't use his turn of foot in a race like that over that distance. 'He gained a lot of experience there and he is only four and still improving, but it is still disappointing. I need to learn and think how I can get him better to be competitive. 'I think he is still an exciting stayer, as you saw from his win in France, but today was a different game over a very long distance. 'I have a lot of faith in him and six months ago he hadn't seen a racecourse, so he has come a long way in a short space of time.'
