'It's phenomenal': Ramaphosa hails teacher assistant jobs for helping millions of young people
The six-month Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) — Basic Education Employment Initiative offers 200,000 unemployed young people between the ages of 18 and 34 the opportunity to be employed as education assistants and general school assistants in state schools.
Phase V started in June, and successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R4,000 and an additional R30 for data.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, Ramaphosa described the programme as 'phenomenal'.
'It is an overarching programme that covers almost all our 25,000 schools. I'm pleased that the basic education department has taken it on, working with the Presidency through the PYEI, and the labour and employment department has also assisted with the funds.'
He said he wants the programme to be strengthened, adding it prepares young people for the formal job sector.
'It is proving to be beneficial in many ways. First, to the young people we bring in — young people who have not had jobs. So we bring them into formal job situations. They come into a formalised institution and they learn a lot. They gain a lot of knowledge, discipline, management skills and people skills to be able to interact with difficult young people, and they are excelling.
'This is usually empowering for these young people and we've had more than two million of them.'
South Africa's unemployment rate has increased to 32.9%, with youth unemployment rising to 46.1%, leaving millions of young people out of work. Ramaphosa said while he would like the programme to be longer, insufficient resources make it difficult.
Despite this, he said the programme is becoming influential globally.
'This is becoming a world-renowned programme. Many other countries are looking at what we are doing here and some of them are going to copy what we are doing, so we are trailblazers in many ways. This is one programme where there hasn't been corruption; it's been flawless and well executed.'

'He preferred to be on the ground with the masses of our people, listening to their concerns and working to improve their lives,' the president said. Passion for education Ramaphosa also praised Mabuza's passion for education. 'There are probably some of his former high school learners among us today, people who still called him Sir and Meneer because they clung to his passion for education long after he left the classroom.' He said Mpumalanga has so many more boarding schools in its rural areas because Mabuza wanted to improve access to education for farm children. As an example, he said Mabuza would even use his own money to help people. Ramaphosa said if those houses were not built after years, they were erected within months after Mabuza's intervention. Ramaphosa said Mabuza could have been useful during the current turbulent political period in South Africa. 'We had hoped he was going to be with us for much longer. Gift of the Givers strongly backs 'honourable' Mkhwanazi
As tensions build up ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa's address on Sunday evening, organisations and individuals are speaking out on the conflict involving KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and police minister Senzo Mchunu. Last Sunday Mkhwanazi made the shocking claim that the disbandment of the political killings task team was orchestrated to shield politically connected members of a criminal syndicate from prosecution, with the assistance of Mchunu. Now, as the country waits for Ramaphosa's promised response to the claims, voices are emerging, opinions are being aired and people are taking sides. One of these is the humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers, which has come out firmly in Mkhwanazi's corner. 'SAPS is so often vilified, insulted, demeaned, maligned, accused of corruption, inaction and inefficiency. Yes, there are those within the SAPS, as in every institution, that have failed to perform, but to generalise and paint an entire institution with the same negativity is disingenuous, demoralising, unjust and unfair to those men and women in blue who put their lives on the line, who strive to serve with distinction, in spite of being under-resourced, unprotected, outgunned and unmatched by sophisticated criminal networks with the most advanced technology at their behest,' Gift of the Givers stated on its social media. 'Leadership, bravery, courage, intelligence, pragmatism, fairness and justice appears in the form of Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who challenges superiors, management, politicians, lawmakers and the system itself, in the interest of the citizens of our beloved country.' 'Gift of the Givers stands behind this honourable man totally,' said the disaster relief group's founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. 'He represents everything that is right in the SAPS confronting organised crime in the form of CIT heists, drug dealing, corrupt politicians and civil servants, tenderpreneurs, construction mafia, taxi gangsters, hijackers and those defeating the ends of justice within all facets of the criminal justice system,' said Sooliman. 'Here is a servant of the law who inspires his own teams to be fearless, courageous and decisive in confronting everything that is rotten to the core in our society. We call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to personally give this servant of the state a hearing on the allegations and on how to improve the crime-fighting capability of the state and fully support him as the president has done so previously by calling for the establishment of a task team to deal with political killings so rife in KZN.' Ramaphosa was attending the Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last Sunday when Mkhwanazi made his astounding accusations. Mchunu has hit back, describing the claims as 'baseless' and 'wild allegations'. However, he later admitted to knowing one of the suspects named by Mkhwanazi, businessman Brown Mgotsi — dismissing their links as 'just a comrade'. Ramaphosa's office says he has 'been seized with this matter ... and will, following various consultations, take the nation into his confidence' at 7pm on Sunday'.

Malema calls on Ramaphosa to fire police minister
EFF leader Julius Malema has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss Police Minister Senzo Mchunu immediately, following mounting allegations of political interference in police operations. Speaking with eNCA in Mpumalanga, Malema accused Mchunu of arriving at the ministry with 'baggage' and misbehaving. 'Mchunu came with baggage. He is new in the job but already tainted. This is a man who went into that institution to do wrong things,' Malema said. He argued that restoring public confidence in the police starts at the top. 'You have to fire the executive authority and then put order. If there are generals who have misbehaved, the national commissioner should act on them. Then we start dealing with crime.' Police Minister Senzo Mchunu faces allegations of interfering in SAPS operations and protecting individuals allegedly linked to criminal activity from prosecution.
