Yew Sin-Ee Yi suffer early exit in Macau
Yew Sin-Ee Yi were hoping to continue their encouraging form after making it into the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Japan Open and China Open respectively over the past two weeks but were left disappointed after narrowly going down 15-21, 21-16, 21-23 to Indonesia's Rahmat Hidayat-Yeremia Rambitan in the first round at the Macau East Asian Games Dome yesterday.
It was also heartbreak for world junior champions Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing after the duo lost 17-21, 16-21 to another Indonesian pair and top seeds Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza.
There were better fortunes though for Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi when they defeated China's Ren Xiangyu-Sun Wenjun 21-15, 21-16.
Meanwhile, in the women's doubles, Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee easily overcame India's Apoorva Gahlawat-Sakshi Gahlawat 21-8, 21-11 and will take on the winners of the all-Taiwanese clash between Lin Chih-chun-Lin Wan-ching and Chen Yu-hsuen-Liu Chiao-yun next.
Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting, though, suffered an early exit after losing 13-21, 11-21 to Americans Lauren Lam-Allison Lee.
Promising youngsters Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu also made a good start in their World Tour debut by making it into the main draw after beating Taiwan's Chou Yun-an-Huang Le Xin 21-17, 21-17 in the qualifying round.
Dania-Zi Yu showed great resilience by bouncing back quickly after their disappointing quarter-final exit in the recent Asian Junior Championships in Solo, Indonesia.
'We are very excited to compete in our first World Tour competition,' said Dania.
'We never expected to qualify for this tournament as our rankings are still quite low. So, we are looking forward to playing against higher ranked pairs in the main draw.'
Dania-Zi Yu are currently ranked 211th in the world and have a tougher task in the first round against Japan's world No. 63 Kaho Osawa-Mai Tanabe.
Joining them in the main draw are Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi, who had to dig deep to come away with a 21-14, 15-21, 21-15 win over Japan's Ririna Hiramoto-Kokona Ishikawa.
Su Hui-Zhing Yi will next face Taiwan's Chen Su-yu-Hsieh Yi-en for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the mixed doubles, Wee Yee Hern-Chan Wen Tse set-up an all-Malaysian first round clash against Loo Bing Kun-Pei Kee after coming out on top over Taiwan's Cheng Kai-wen-Liu Chiao-yun 21-8, 17-21, 21-17 in the qualifying round.

Justin's title hopes washed out in Macau but Yogendran happy with progress
PETALING JAYA: A leaky court disrupted shuttler Justin Hoh's (pic) rhythm in the Macau Open final but singles coach K. Yogendran is not using the incident as an excuse. Justin was hoping to capture his first World Tour title in the men's singles but found the going tough not just against his opponent Alwi Farhan from Indonesia but also due to the court conditions at the Macau East Asian Games Dome. The 21-year-old Justin lost 15-21, 5-21 yesterday. Water kept leaking which forced the players to keep asking the court attendants to mop the court in between rallies. Yogendran said that Justin, who suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury in 2023, could not move the way he usually would due to the leaking. 'There was water leaking onto the court and this disrupted Justin today (yesterday),' said Yogendran. 'We all know that Justin had a serious injury and could not play for nearly a year. 'In his heart, he wanted to win but he was not brave to move the way he usually does. 'So, his movement was not smooth on court and that was one of the issues he faced. 'But this is not an excuse. We have to admit he lost to a better player.' Despite the defeat, Yogendran was happy with Justin's breakthrough outing after he made it into his first final in the World Tour. Justin was also the first Malaysian in the men's singles to reach a World Tour final this year. 'Overall, it has been a good week for Justin. He beat a few players whom he had struggled against previously to reach the final,' said Justin. 'This is a good process for him. After so long, he has got back his rhythm and game play. At least he knows now where he stands. 'Moving forward, we will keep working to improve his weaknesses and help him achieve more.' Justin will be hoping to build on his positive showing after struggling to make an impression in the World Tour before this. The youngster's best result this year before this was reaching the quarter-finals in the Taiwan Open. Justin will next have a break from tournaments before competing in the Hong Kong Open from Sept 9-14.

PETALING JAYA: Staying patient under a tough situation certainly paid dividends for men's doubles pair Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi at the Macau Open as they walked away with their maiden World Tour crown. In a final marred by a leaking roof and constant court stoppages, Roy King-Arif pulled off a stunning 22-20, 21-18 win over Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza to end their title wait at the Macau East Asian Games Dome yesterday. They braved slippery conditions and relentless delays to come through the test with flying colours. And that brought much delight to the men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. 'It was not a good game to watch as there were breaks after just one or two points to mop the floor due to the leaking,' said Herry. 'It definitely disrupted the flow of the game but I told Roy King-Arif to keep their focus and stay patient. 'It was a tough situation out there and I'm happy that our pair managed to get the win and grab their first title this year.' Sabar-Moh started as the favourites but Roy King-Arif showed great determination and fighting spirit to come back from 18-20 to win the first game narrowly. In the second game, the Malaysians again pulled off an impressive comeback from 9-13 to come away with the victory. It was sweet revenge for Roy King-Arif after losing to Sabar-Moh in the Spain Masters final last year. Ending their title drought in the World Tour comes as a huge relief and a timely boost for Roy King-Arif especially with the pair set to make their debuts in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. 'Winning their first World Tour title will give Roy King-Arif more confidence heading into the world meet,' said Herry. 'This is a good achievement for them as their rankings also should go up and this will give them a better seeding in Paris.' Roy King-Arif are expected to break into the world's top 20 when the official rankings list are released tomorrow. The seedings for the world meet will be revealed on Friday while the draw will be out on Aug 13. The other Malaysian men's doubles pairs, who have qualified for the prestigious meet are world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 4 independent duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 7). Meanwhile, mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing could not crown their surprise run to the final in Macau with the title after going down 13-21, 16-21 to Denmark's Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje. Jimmy-Pei Jing though can be proud of their efforts after making it into the title match in their maiden World Tour outing.

‘Gaddar' eyes capital gains in terms of progress in new chapter with KL
PETALING JAYA: Fazrul Amir Md Zaman's last stint outside Kelantan came in 2019 with the now-defunct PKNS, when he was a promising youngster trying to make his mark in the Youth and President's Cup. That opportunity did not pan out, but the experience helped shape his journey. Now, seven years later, the man fondly known as 'Gaddar' is ready to take another leap - this time with Kuala Lumpur in the Super League kicking off on Aug 8. After gradually building his reputation back home - especially during a standout 2023 season with Kelantan - Fazrul earned a move to the capital. While some initially viewed him as a potential back-up option, his lively displays in pre-season friendlies suggest he may have a bigger role on the left wing. But the 25-year-old isn't getting ahead of himself as he is well aware of the fierce competition in his position, with Argentine playmaker Manuel Hidalgo, S. Sharvin, and J. Partiban all vying for spots on the flanks. 'This is my second time playing outside the east coast, but I've been able to adapt quickly. The staff and my teammates have helped make the transition smooth,' said Fazrul. 'Competition on the wings is intense, but I consider it a positive challenge. It motivates me to raise my level. 'After four friendly matches, I feel more in tune with the team, and my form is picking up - but there's still plenty I need to improve on.' Kuala Lumpur have played four pre-season friendlies so far, drawing with Bunga Raya (0-0) and Sabah (1-1), beating Armed Forces (3-1), and losing narrowly to Indonesian side Semen Padang (0-1).
