Adass Israel synagogue firebombing arrest

The Age3 days ago
Police have arrested a second man over his alleged role in the Adass Israel synagogue fire.
Details, including if any charges have been laid, are yet to be released but Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam and AFP Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett will hold a press conference at 1pm.
A Joint Counter-Terrorism Team (JCTT) investigation has been ongoing since the firebombing in Ripponlea on December 6, 2024.
This masthead revealed earlier this month that it had so far only been able to identify low-level suspects allegedly responsible for setting the fire, who were suspected as acting as street gang members for hire, with no known political or ideological affiliations.
A 20-year-old Williamstown man was charged earlier this month over his alleged role in the theft of a blue Volkswagen Golf, which was allegedly used by those involved in the arson.
The man faces charges including theft of a motor vehicle and failing to comply with an order to provide access to apps on his mobile phone.

Irish national charged after allegedly using a fake passport to enter Australia and escaping detention with bedsheets

Federal police have charged an Irish man they allege entered the country on a false passport and later escaped detention using bedsheets tied together. Michael Connors, 26, appeared briefly in the Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday morning, where no application for bail was made on his behalf. Mr Connors, who the Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege is in the country unlawfully, has been charged with two migration offences. It's alleged he entered Australia on a false passport and was then detained when he refused to undertake biometric tests. The AFP alleges he then escaped detention after tying bedsheets together and scaling down the side of a building. The AFP said it issued an arrest warrant for Mr Connors in April 2025. He was then apprehended by NSW Police Force officers in the outer Sydney suburb of Box Hill on Thursday. He appeared before Parramatta Magistrates Court on Friday, where police said a successful application was made to extradite the man back to Queensland. Mr Connors has been charged with two federal offences, including one count of using false documents and false or misleading information and one count of escaping from detention. The maximum penalty for the false documents' offence is 10 years' imprisonment. Mr Connors's lawyer Mark Stone made no application for bail on his client's behalf and did not answer reporters' questions, saying he had "no comment" as the matter was before the courts. The matter will return to court on August 15.

University academic faces charges after allegedly showing child abuse material to students during university lecture, Melbourne

A 70-year-old academic from Melbourne has been charged with multiple serious offences after he allegedly displayed child abuse material to students during a university lecture taking place earlier this year. In response to reports made to authorities, officers from Victoria Police's Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team commenced an investigation extending across both Melbourne and Sydney. The investigation led to the seizure of several electronic devices believed to be linked to the alleged offence. According to Victoria Police, the academic, who resides in Middle Park, displayed the prohibited material during a lecture held in Melbourne's CBD on February 5, 2025. As part of their investigation, police carried out a search warrant on 12 February at the man's residence in Middle Park, where they confiscated a range of electronic devices for further examination. The following day, with support from the New South Wales Police Force, a second search warrant was executed at a property located in Sydney, New South Wales. More electronic devices were seized at the second property in Sydney's east. The investigation into those devices remains ongoing. The academic has now been charged with one Federal offence relating to the possession of child abuse material, along with two additional child abuse material offences under Victoria's Crimes Act. He is due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on August 7.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw mum on resignation rumours after Dural caravan controversy

Don't miss out on the headlines from National. Followed categories will be added to My News. The future of the Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw is uncertain after speculation within the rank and file that he is planning to leave. The straight-shooting chief of police would not confirm last night that he planned to give four weeks' notice. The AFP gave a statement saying: 'Commissioner Kershaw has not submitted his resignation and the AFP has no further comment at this stage.' Commissioner Kershaw was besieged by intense political pressure in recent months over his handling of the January 19 Dural caravan terror saga, with some accusing him of stonewalling and contributing to a public overreaction to what was later found to be a bogus terror plot. Commissioner Kershaw refused to confirm when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was briefed on the alleged plan to use a caravan in a terrorist act targeting Sydney's Jewish community. Commissioner Kershaw told a Senate committee in February that providing further details could compromise operational integrity: 'I will not provide updates in public forums.' 'Details provided, whether it seems innocuous or not, can have an impact on investigations,' he said. 'This is looking more and more like a political cover-up,' former opposition leader Peter Dutton said, calling for an independent inquiry. 'It is inconceivable that the Prime Minister was not briefed on a matter of this gravity at the earliest opportunity.' Commissioner Kershaw has also faced criticism for inconsistencies in briefing protocols. Liberal Senator James Paterson questioned why ministers were informed immediately in previous security incidents but not in this case. 'The public deserves transparency and the reassurance that our security agencies are acting without fear or favour,' he said. Commissioner Kershaw declined to respond directly, saying only, 'I briefed ministers at the appropriate time … I'm not going to speculate – it's not helpful to our investigation.' The pressure intensified after AFP Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett confirmed in March that the caravan plot had been 'a criminal con job' rather than a legitimate terrorist threat. Questions were raised about the AFP and its inaction regarding the public alarm over the alleged threat, which went unchecked for weeks.
