CHANDIGARH: Panjab University students have to give an undertaking at the time of admission to stay away from drugs and submit to medical tests at random. This mandatory declaration binds students and their parents to acknowledge university's zero-tolerance policy on drugs, alcohol and tobacco - both in hostels and on campus.
According to new rules, students must consent to undergo random drug testing - including breath, blood or urine analysis - if deemed necessary by Panjab University (PU) authorities. The move is in line with a University Grants Commission advisory, calling on all higher educational institutions to implement anti-drug measures. It recommended obtaining written commitments from students, creating awareness, and strengthening surveillance systems to prevent substance abuse.
The university's new undertaking warns of strict disciplinary action, including suspension, expulsion or legal proceedings against students found in possession of or involved in consumption or distribution of banned substances.
PU authorities have also introduced compulsory guest registration in hostels and are in the process of tightening access control.
Officials said the anti-drug undertaking was part of a broader crackdown to safeguard campus environment and student wellbeing.

"This isn't just about one incident. The undertaking, awareness drives and improved monitoring are part of a systematic effort to make PU a safe and drug-free campus," said a senior official.
PU has instructed all departments and hostel wardens to collect signed undertakings from students and their parents before finalizing admissions.
The move comes after the death of an outsider of a suspected drug overdose in a PU boys' hostel in Nov. The case triggered scrutiny, especially after a student and a former student were arrested.

The trauma of being duped: Digital arrest victims troop into counsellors' chambers

Representative Image KOLKATA: An increasing number of Kolkatans are seeking out professional mental health support over ways to deal with the fallout of digital arrest. This includes both people who have been digitally defrauded, as also those who feel they are especially at risk, typically - but not restricted to - older individuals, who are not very technologically adept. The most common psychological issues being reported are anxiety, panic attacks, diminished self-confidence and a deep sense of shame. The caller offered to resolve the matter discreetly if a certain amount of money was paid. The worried father managed to scribble a note, asking his wife to call their son, but she was unsuccessful in getting through. The father, anxious to save the family's reputation, transferred Rs 5 lakh to the fraudsters. It was only after two hours, when his son called them back to explain that he could not take their calls because he was in a work meeting, that he knew he was defrauded. 'He experienced deep mental trauma over a sense of guilt and shame because he was constantly thinking how easily he was fooled, despite being an educated person,' said psychiatrist Jay Ranjan Ram of Apollo Multispecialty Hospital, whom he consulted after some days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Ram said his patient had to have several counselling sessions and was prescribed medication. Even cases where scamsters were unsuccessful leave their 'almost victims' scarred. Sanjay Garg, consultant, mental health and behavioural sciences at Fortis Anandapur, said this woman felt an acute sense of anxiety when she went to office the next day. 'She told me she could not shake off the feeling that her colleagues were discussing her, or were questioning her integrity,' Garg said. 'This caused a full-blown panic attack, hospitalisation and subsequent referral to a psychiatrist. Her condition was diagnosed as psychosis, characterized by paranoia, stress and anxiety, depression, aggression towards family members, delusions and disrupted thoughts and perceptions that others intended to harm her,' She is under treatment and is getting better, but she continues to experience anxiety, panic attacks and diminished self-confidence. Another person who was not defrauded, but is still mentally scarred by his experience, is a retired senior govt official from south Kolkata, who received calls from 'government agency' representatives, claiming his accounts were involved in hawala transactions. They threatened to arrest him unless he transferred Rs 30 lakh immediately. A visiting friend's timely intervention prevented the fraud. 'This gentleman was scared of social ostracization and loss of face if people came to know that his accounts were used for hawala transactions, even though the accounts weren't,' said psychiatrist Sabyasachi Mitra of Woodlands Hospital. 'His depression relapsed. Even as he is now doing better with counselling and medication, he is yet to come out of the trauma.' Geriatric physician Dhires Kumar Chowdhury, working with Bancnbo, a south Kolkata-based organisation that cares for the elderly, said their members constantly worry about being victims of cyber fraud. 'In addition to the insecurity of living alone, with most of their children working in other cities or countries, cybercrime such as digital arrest have instilled another fear in their lives. There have been cases where a couple of our members almost felt prey to such fraud. They live in constant fear,' Chowdhury said.

Bubbles in urine: What it could mean, according to a doctor

Persistent foamy urine can be a sign of underlying health issues, but occasional bubbles are usually harmless and resolved with hydration. Dr. Shirley Koeh advises that if bubbles persist despite increased water intake and frequent urination, it's crucial to test for protein in the urine, potentially indicating hypertension, diabetes, or kidney disease. Pay attention to your pee. Because this byproduct of metabolism can tell a lot about your health. If the urine looks unusually bubbly, should you be concerned? Foamy urine, which is the presence of bubbles when you pee, is pretty common; however, it may also signal something more. So, how do you know if it is a harmless thing or a sign of something serious? Dr. Shirley Koeh, a functional medicine doctor based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has shared some tips on how to analyze whether the bubbles in urine are normal or a warning sign. Is it normal to see bubbles in the urine Bubbles in urine can occur for various reasons, and not all are cause for alarm. Dr. Koeh notes that a single episode isn't a warning sign. 'If you started seeing bubbles in your urine, we need to know whether this is the first episode or a single episode that you are experiencing,' the doctor said in a video shared on Instagram. She noted that if it's a single episode, there's nothing to worry about, and once you hydrate, it will go back to normal. 'If it's just a single episode, then what you should do is try to hydrate yourself as much as possible. Do not hold your urine and try to pass urine as frequently as possible. And this bubble should go away.' However, seeing bubbles in the urine often could signal an underlying cause. 'Persistently having bubbles in your urine can indicate the presence of protein in the urine.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 60년 묵은 혈관 찌꺼기 ,,, '이것.'' 하나면 다른건 하지 않아도 됩니다! 면역력 Rg3의 비결 더 알아보기 Undo Tests to find out the cause According to her, if bubbles persist despite hydration and urination, testing for protein in the urine is important. She noted that two tests can help confirm this. 'The most accurate way to find out is actually sending the urine to the lab to find out if there is any microalbumin, which is a small protein that will exist in your urine,' the doctor said. The second test is taking a urine dipstick test, which can be done at home. 'But that test, might not be as sensitive as compared to the first one,' she cautions. 'Pretty Little Baby' Singer Connie Francis Hospitalised, Family Gives Health Update Protein in urine, also known as proteinuria or albuminuria, is the presence of excess protein in the urine. Identifying the protein in the urine is a critical step in determining whether further medical evaluation is needed. Causes of proteinuria 'If we have established that you are really having protein in your urine, then we need to consider a few possible causes,' she adds. The presence of protein in the urine could be for various reasons. The first is hypertension, or high blood pressure, which can strain the kidneys and lead to protein leakage. The second is diabetes, a condition that can damage kidney function over time, resulting in proteinuria. Another cause is kidney disease, which is triggered by certain medications, known as drug-induced kidney damage. 'So make sure that you check your blood pressure for hypertension or even check your blood for diabetes and rule out any possible drug-induced kidney disease,' the doctor alerts.
