Flying Scotsman to appear at Greatest Gathering event
Flying Scotsman will appear at the world's largest gathering of historic and modern railway vehicles in August.
Train manufacturer Alstom announced that the locomotive will be part of the Greatest Gathering event at its factory in Derby.
Up to 30,000 people are expected to attend the event, which runs from August 1-3.
An additional 2,500 tickets for each day will be available from 9am on Friday.
Flying Scotsman was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built in Doncaster.
Its achievements include hauling the inaugural non-stop London to Edinburgh train service in 1928, and becoming the UK's first locomotive to reach 100mph six years later.
Rob Whyte, managing director at Alstom UK and Ireland, said: 'Flying Scotsman's attendance is a powerful tribute to Britain's steam legacy and a moment of railway history not to be missed.
'While we proudly honour icons of the past, like Flying Scotsman, we also hope the Greatest Gathering will ignite the imagination of tomorrow's engineers, as we showcase the latest sustainable and digital rail innovations across our Derby site.'
Craig Bentley, director of the National Railway Museum, which owns Flying Scotsman, said: 'Flying Scotsman has captured the public's imagination for over a century.
'We are proud to be able to share this icon of the track, along with other historically significant locomotives from the national collection, at this landmark event.'
More than 50 rolling stock exhibits from the past, present and future of the railways will be on display, featuring a combination of those powered by steam, diesel and electricity.
This includes the 200-year-old Locomotion No.1, which was the first locomotive to run on the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) line in north-east England.
The Greatest Gathering forms part of Britain's wider Railway 200 festivities.
The industry is engaging in a year-long celebration to mark the opening of the S&DR on September 27 1825, which is credited as being the birth of the modern railway.

Lee asked for the 45% question: "Which is the odd one out? A) Dapple, B) Slime, C) Spear or D) Rabbit. Contestants only had 30 seconds to identify the correct answer and lock it in. Once time was up, the comedian revealed: "We've only lost three of you, but there was 13 passes on that one." The right answer was: D) Rabbit, as, "Rabbit is the only word when you take away the first letter it does not spell out the name of a fruit." "Dapple" becomes Apple, "Slime" becomes Lime and "Spear" becomes Pear. It's not the first time that contestants were caught out on a tough question. A previous episode saw host Lee left shocked as a record-number of players used their pass. The 1% Club has been an instant hit with viewers - but fans may be surprised to learn that some scenes are actually fake, according to one former contestant. ITV's The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack of Not Going Out fame, has taken the nation by storm since its launch in 2022. This primetime IQ game show distinguishes itself by asking contestants logical and common-sense questions rather than relying on general knowledge. With 100 competitors initially in the running, they are gradually eliminated until someone manages to answer a fiendishly difficult question within 30 seconds—a question that supposedly only 1% of the population can solve correctly—in hopes of snagging the £100,000 prize. However, a twist behind the scenes has emerged, thanks to a previous contestant revealing some surprising production secrets. Heidi Phillips, 49, divulged details about her experience on the highly-rated ITV show which she participated in October of the preceding year. Having secured her spot on the show after spotting an advert on Facebook and passing a mock quiz via Zoom, Heidi tells all in a conversation with Fruity Slots. Exposing the true goings-on during filming, she let slip that not everything viewers see is as it happens live. According to her account, while participants focus on answering questions on their tablets, host Lee Mack is busy cracking jokes for the audiences at home. However, here lies the rub: Heidi let on that Lee's humorous interludes aren't shot concurrently with the contestant's efforts. She elaborated in her chat with Fruity Slots, elucidating: "While contestants are answering questions on the tablet, Lee usually takes the time to make a joke to the audience at home. But all his comical parts are filmed later. "When we're answering the question, he remains silent. Then he has to be filmed asking the question again and we have to pretend to put our answers in. "There were actually invigilators who go back through the show episode to make sure every contestant plays the game fairly. "You could have won the cash prize but if they go back through filming and see you glanced over at another contestant's screen before answering, you'll forfeit the prize." Heidi added: "That's not happened yet - but it was a stern warning!". Despite the strict warning from producers, Heidi said host, Lee, is very charming and "naturally funny", sharing: "He's honestly really funny. Very naturally funny. He also has banter with the warm-up comedian and creates a nice atmosphere." She also expressed her eagerness to return to the show and praised the programme's staff for "going back over the funny anecdotes I'd shared with them and make sure I'd be happy to discuss it on the show if Lee (Mack) wanted to". Heidi, who noted the importance of dressing appropriately for the show, avoiding anything "nothing low cut", remarked: "They seemed really concerned about our welfare and us being happy to share things on TV. They really took the time to check in with us."
