PREVIEW: Paarl giants ready for high-stakes derby showdown

Paarl Boys' High and Paarl Gymnasium will meet at Faure Street Stadium on Saturday in what is widely seen as the biggest schools rugby fixture in South Africa.
This year's match will be played in front of a packed stadium, with about 20,000 fans expected and many more watching online or on TV. Both teams have had strong seasons, and the game will likely decide which side finishes 2025 as the top performer in school rugby.
Paarl Boys', coached by Sean Erasmus, have bounced back well from a difficult 2024 season. They lost 30–8 to Paarl Gym in last year's derby, but have shown big improvements since then. This year, they've won 15 out of 16 games, including a good win over Grey College.
Paarl Gym, coached by former Springbok Pieter Rossouw, are unbeaten in 2025. They've played 15 games, winning 13 and drawing two. Their attacking play has been a standout. They've scored 40 points or more in most matches, and centre Markus Muller, who also captains SA Schools, has led the way with some strong performances.
Boishaai have built their game on solid defence. They've only conceded 20 or more points in three games this season, which shows they can handle pressure. That defence will be tested on Saturday by one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the country.
Both teams have good reasons to believe they can win. Gimmies have been consistent and dangerous on attack, while Boishaai have improved a lot and will be determined to turn the tables after last year's defeat.
The stage is set for another big derby between two of South Africa's most famous rugby schools.

Springbok innovations: Rassie still has ideas up his sleeve

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said the team had to keep innovating to stay ahead of the opposition. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said his innovations are far from over, and we may see some in this season's Rugby Championship, which gets under way in two weeks' time. In the season's four opening games, the Springboks beat the Barbarians 54–7, Italy 42–24 and 45–0, and Georgia 55–10. South Africa fielded 48 players in these matches, though Erasmus said he would still like to give opportunities to Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse, Quan Horn and Renzo du Plessis this year. Traditional centre André Esterhuizen packed down at flank in the opening game against the Barbarians. A 'hybrid player', Esterhuizen played flank in attack and dropped to centre in defence. Then, in the second Test against Italy, the Boks played a short kick-off to induce a scrum, and introduced the world to the midfield 'fake lineout' maul from open play. The latter led to a try, while World Rugby later deemed the former an intentional infringement. The Springboks employed no tricks in the Georgia Test but named three uncapped players in the front row – an extreme rarity in its own right – and played Cobus Wiese at No 8 though he (just his second Test) had never played there in all his professional career. 'You've got to keep innovating' Erasmus named a tried-and-tested squad of 37 players for the first two Rugby Championship matches against Australia, played in Joburg on 16 August and then Cape Town on 23 August. Separate squads will be named for New Zealand and Argentina closer to their fixtures. Erasmus said the defending champions would continue employing their tricks. 'You've got to keep innovating,' he said. 'We've got one or two more plans and ideas up our sleeves. Opposition teams now know what we're about and are developing systems to counter us. We'll also definitely still use André Esterhuizen to continue in that hybrid role.' Evan Roos omission and the eighthman experiment Wiese stood in for his brother Jasper against Georgia, after he received a ban. That was in place of specialist eighthman Evan Roos, who is absent from the squad but remains on standby as a back-up. Asked whether he would play a specialist eighthman or stick with Wiese, who was decent at times but seemed out of sorts in his first game in that role, Erasmus was confident in his plans. 'There's different guys with different skill sets, but we feel the eighthmen we have in the group currently [will perform]. With Kwagga being able to play there, Marco [van Staden], Cobus… And Jasper Wiese also comes back in that second All Black game. All is good there.' He said they had organised with Stormers coach John Dobson that Evan Roos would get game time and work on identified areas while on standby. 'We don't want to waste guys' time where they are just training with us, when they can actually play for their franchises or Currie Cup teams… Evan might come into the mix a little bit later.'

Rassie Erasmus doesn't have a first-choice flyhalf: ‘Each one has his strengths'

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says he does not have a first-choice flyhalf and will use all three players in his squad in different situations in this year's Rugby Championship. He said the opposition, game plan for the week and how his bench was split will all determine which No 10 he plays. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Springboks generally kicked for touch when they won a penalty in their early-season games against the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia. But a traditional approach may be required against tougher opposition in the Rugby Championship, especially when games are tight. The Springbok flyhalf conundrum The Springboks won their last match 55–10, against Georgia at Mbombela Stadium, despite starting flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu missing four of his five kicks. He was replaced in the second half by Handré Pollard, who was excellent in front of the posts, as always. He nailed all four of his conversions and scored a try. But Erasmus has opted to start with Feinberg-Mngomezulu or Manie Libbok in most matches lately, using the other player or Pollard from the bench. Pollard only started one of the four games so far, though he played the full 80 minutes against Italy at Loftus. Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Libbok have been stronger in open play than Pollard, though less dependable in front of posts. The former achieved an 85.7% kicking success rate in the last United Rugby Championship, while his Stormers teammate Libbok recorded 72.6%. Yet it was Libbok who shone in front of posts in the second Italy Test, coming back from two misses to slotting his next five. It is somewhat of a conundrum for Erasmus, who was evidently backing Libbok and Feinberg-Mngomezulu's open play, after they shone in the United Rugby Championship. But it is hard to judge the number of potential points they created versus those they lost in front of posts. Rassie: Using all three makes the team less predictable 'I actually think all three of them are above average in every single department,' Erasmus said. 'Each one has his different strengths. I think it will depend on the opposition.' He said it would also depend on his forward-back bench split, and he may even employ utility back Damian Willemse. 'It will depend on whether we go a 6–2 split or 7–1 or 5–3. Probably if you go 6–2, someone like Sacha will work lekker, or Damian Willemse. It will depend on what the plan is on the day. 'We don't have a first choice currently. If it was now a semi-final or final, it will be this flyhalf. If it is a running open game and we have a 7–1 split, it will be this guy. Then, if we really want to grind it out, it will be that guy. 'We like to think that doesn't just keep our options open, but it's harder to analyse. Less predictable.'
