Gauteng High Court orders Meta to shut child porn accounts targeting SA learners
According to The Witness, Judge Mudunwazi Makamu granted the order yesterday after an urgent application by the Digital Law Company, directed by social media law expert Emma Sadlier.
Makamu agreed with advocate Ben Winks's arguments that children were being victimised through the distribution of explicit material.
Makamu ordered Meta to permanently shut down all linked accounts and channels and to 'disable the creator of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed… from creating any further WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles'.
The company must also provide Digital Law Company with 'all information' in its possession about the creators.
'The respondents shall, before 12:00 on July 15, furnish to the applicant all information in the first respondent's possession pertaining to the creator(s) of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles.'
Sadlier confirmed that The Digital Law Company obtained a High Court order against Meta to shut down certain anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp Channels distributing child pornography.
Urgent action to protect children
Sadlier confirmed the High Court order against Meta, describing it as crucial for protecting children from online exploitation.
'We count our lucky stars to be able to work with such extraordinary legal minds who understand how important it is to protect our children in this damn crazy world,' she said.
The signed order will be sent to the registrar this morning, she told The Citizen.

Shocking revelations in court papers
In court papers, Sadlier said pornographic material was sourced from the community via an anonymous uploading service called NGL (Not Gonna Lie).
She explained that the person behind the Instagram profiles and WhatsApp channels appeared to be the same individual using similar aliases and uploading intimate content received from others.
'It goes without saying that the uploading and distribution of this content is a crime, a flagrant disregard of the law and an egregious violation of constitutional rights, including… the rights to dignity, privacy, the best interests of a child and psychological integrity,' she said.
The channels reportedly included explicit images and videos of South African learners, some filmed in school bathrooms.

Meta's alleged failure to act
Sadlier alleged that while Meta administrators occasionally deleted pages or channels, these were often reinstated or replicated soon after, allowing the illegal content to circulate again.
Yesterday, Digital Law Company launched urgent legal action, saying a WhatsApp channel with over 11 000 followers – mostly children – had threatened to publish 'everything' that evening.
In a letter to Meta, the company's attorney, Rupert Candy, warned: 'If you do not ensure the deletion of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles before then, the lives of numerous South African children will be irreparably harmed, with potentially suicidal consequences.'
Sadlier said investigations revealed the person behind the profiles was soliciting sexual content from learners and distributing it to large audiences on WhatsApp community channels and Instagram profiles.
'The affected individuals face the imminent and irreparable dissemination of their most sensitive and intimate information,' she said.

Incoming acting police minister blasts 'corruption in ANC'
Professor Firoz Cachalia , the incoming acting Minister of Police, has strongly criticised corruption within the ANC, calling it 'an enormous source of shame.' In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Kachalia said his political loyalties will not stop him from tackling wrongdoing. He pledged to act even if it involves members of his own party. 'My ANC conscience requires that I tackle these challenges with principles and a clear commitment to the country's democratic institutions,' he said. 'Corruption in the ANC is an enormous source of shame to me and to many of us.' Kachalia said he accepted President Cyril Ramaphosa's offer 'without a second's hesitation,' describing the role as an extension of his lifelong work in defending South Africa's democracy. The presidency announced the appointment will take effect from 1 August, after his academic term at the University of the Witwatersrand ends. The appointment has drawn political fire. The Economic Freedom Fighters and the MK Party claim the move violates Section 98 of the Constitution. They argue the president cannot assign ministerial functions to someone outside Cabinet. Kachalia defended the decision, noting that the president can appoint two ministers who are not Members of Parliament. 'These are political and ethical questions, not legal ones,' he said. 'The president had to act.' Asked about his approach to cleaning up the police ministry amid allegations of political interference and criminal infiltration. Kachalia said he would start by consulting senior police leadership and listening to their views. He also welcomed the formation of a judicial commission of inquiry, calling it a valuable fact-finding tool that will assist his office. 'The process that I need to follow is quite clear,' he said. 'I'm going to have the benefit of an objective, reliable process conducted by experienced judges.' Kachalia also chairs the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council, which recently submitted a midterm and closeout report to the presidency. The reports highlight deep structural failures in SAPS crime intelligence and recommend urgent reforms, including the creation of a new anti-corruption agency. While the presidency has not yet made the report public or acted on its proposals, Kachalia said he now has an opportunity to bring those ideas into the Ministry of Police. He admitted the processing of the report 'has taken too long' and emphasised the urgency of implementing reforms. Kachalia will perform his duties in full for as long as the president retains him, despite the post being described as 'acting.' 'Once I'm sworn in, I'm the Minister of Police until the president says otherwise,' he said. 'And if he allows me to continue, I will.' 'Crime she didn't commit': Jayden-Lee Meek's grandmother defends 'killer mom'
The maternal grandmother of Jayden-Lee Meek has defended her daughter Tiffany, whom she claims is not guilty of murder. Debbie Dunn has accused police and activists of trying to 'discredit' her daughter by keeping them away from the courtroom. Tiffany appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday, 14 July, on charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, and crimen injuria. Exactly two months earlier, Jayden-Lee was found dead outside his apartment complex after reportedly going missing hours earlier. He suffered a blunt force head injury and was reportedly severely beaten. Speaking in a TikTok video accompanied by her son, Debbie Dunn claimed that her daughter, Tiffany, was not guilty of the murder of Jayden-Lee Meek. In the clip, the grandmother claims she was 'deeply disappointed' in the police investigation as well as the prosecution of her daughter 'over a crime she did not commit'. Dunn claimed that Tiffany's family, friends, and attorney were present at court, but they were unable to access the courtroom where she appeared. Jayden-Lee Meek's mother Tiffany has been accused of his murder. She made her first appearance in court this week. Speaking anonymously to eNCA, the investigator stated that the body was warm and fresh, indicating that he had been killed shortly before his discovery. The body was covered with bruises and abrasions. Forensic investigation in the apartment Jayden-Lee shared with his mother, Tiffany, revealed that blood stains had been scrubbed clean with detergent. Blood was discovered on Jayden-Lee's school clothes, underwear, and his schoolbooks. The investigator claims that there was an attempt to conceal evidence.
