3-day Int'l conference concludes at IIT Tirupati
Tirupati: The Third International Conference on Construction Materials and Structures (ICCMS 2025), hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati concluded on Saturday. Centred on the theme 'Synergy of Materials and Structures', the conference addressed the urgent need to align materials innovation with advanced structural design to confront the pressing challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, digital transformation and urban complexity. Over 550 delegates from across academia, industry, government and research institutions representing more than 12 countries took part in the conference. During the valedictory session held on Saturday, IIT Tirupati Director Prof KN Satyanarayana presented nine Best Paper and Posters awards, recognising exceptional scholarly contributions across oral and poster categories. Conference chair Prof Bijily Balakrishnan described ICCMS 2025 as one of the most meaningful experiences of her professional life. She emphasised four key outcomes of the conference: The global reaffirmation of the need for low-carbon, high-performance construction materials; the rising importance of digital fabrication and adaptive systems in delivering efficient and resilient structures; the power of cross-sectoral collaborations in informing policy and accelerating innovation; and the essential engagement of young researchers, championed by institutions such as RILEM and ICI. Head of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Prof Suresh Jain and others took part.

Adani Ports Unveils Steel Slag Road in Hazira, World's 1st In A Private Port
New Delhi: In a landmark step for green infrastructure, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has inaugurated the world's first steel slag road at any port, setting a new global benchmark in circular economy-led development. Spanning 1.1 km within Hazira Port, this sustainable road connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard. It uses processed steel slag aggregates - a byproduct of steel manufacturing - demonstrating how industrial waste can be repurposed into high-performance, durable infrastructure. The project was developed as part of Phase-II of the Bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The road's flexible pavement design, curated by CSIR-CRRI, enhances load-bearing capacity and longevity while cutting down on construction costs and environmental impact. The initiative aligns with the 'waste to wealth' mission and reinforces APSEZ's commitment to environmentally conscious port development. The road was formally inaugurated at Hazira Port by Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science and Technology), NITI Aayog, in the presence of Dr N Kalaiselvi, Director-General, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR, and Dr Manoranjan Parida, Director, CSIR-CRRI and President, Indian Roads Congress. Also present were Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist and inventor of steel slag road technology; Anand Marathe, COO, Adani Hazira Port Ltd, and other dignitaries and scientists. This marks India's third steel slag road, but the first ever constructed inside a port globally, placing India and APSEZ at the forefront of sustainable maritime infrastructure. With this initiative, APSEZ continues to lead the transformation of India's logistics sector, blending innovation, industrial ecology, and infrastructure resilience in service of national growth.

Addressing the fresh graduates at the seventh annual convocation of Indian Institute of Information technology, Dharwad held on its campus on Friday, she said that there has been a stellar achievements of India in science and technology, and exhorted graduating students to see that the newer technology is used for the betetrment of society. Kalaiselvi reminded the students about the investments made by their parents, teachers and society at large, to ensure their success as graduates from a premier national institution, and urged them to fulfill their ambitions and become worthy citizens of the country. She further stated that this is a knowledge-driven era and only those possessing exquisite skills have a fair chance to excel. Lot of emphasis has been laid on providing skills to the young workforce and therefore the students along with academics should adapt skills in shaping their career, she said. Arsh Desai was presented the Director's Medal while Ms Enduri Jahnavi received the Best Outgoing Girl Student medal. A total 256 graduate degrees and one PhD degree were awarded during the ceremony. As many as 132 students from computer science and engineering, 69 students from data science and artificial intelligence (DSAI) and 55 students from electronics and communication engineering were conferred degrees.
