‘I feel like an unpaid personal shopper': Woman fed up with friend's relentless online order requests

SINGAPORE: At her wits' end, a woman took to social media to ask Singaporeans how she could set boundaries with a friend who has been repeatedly asking her to make online purchases on platforms like Shopee and Lazada on their behalf.
In a post on the r/askSingapore forum, she explained that she had initially agreed to help because her friend claimed they were 'extremely wary of digital payment methods', didn't have access to services like PayNow or DBS PayLah, and didn't even have a local bank account (which they supposedly could prove by showing their Singpass).
'At first, I didn't mind helping once or twice, but over the last few weeks, they even set up a separate WhatsApp group just for these orders. Now they expect me to send them a screenshot of every item—size, colour, products—before and after 'I buy,' and they dump multiple bulk orders on me in one go,' she continued.
'I'm a pretty nice person, but this is starting to feel like I'm their unpaid/free personal shopper or purchasing secretary. If I may add on, I have to meet them at their convenient time and place too. I get that they're worried about scams, but the proof via the Singpass claim seems fishy to me. Especially in this day and age, in Singapore, they don't have any bank accounts at all, which I find incredibly hard to believe. They're working full-time, apparently. Even 80-year-olds have bank accounts. Am I overreacting, or am I being taken advantage of?' she wrote.
Worried this might keep happening, she asked fellow Singaporeans, 'How can I set a polite boundary but firmly tell them that I can't keep doing this so often without sounding mean? What can I say? (In a nice, non-judgmental way.) Of course, without making things awkward. It's getting really time-consuming and a bit exploitative.' 'Simply tell them you don't want to help them.'
The post quickly gained traction on the platform, with many users sharing their thoughts and advice.
One user threw out the idea of charging a 10% service fee for every item her friend asks her to buy, adding, 'If they think that it is unreasonable or a scam, you tell them your time spent on doing such things, especially where money is involved, isn't worth your time anymore.
If you have a full-time job, calculate how much you make in an hour and charge them for it. I'm sure they eventually will stop. These people, you give them one inch, they take one yard.'
Another commented, 'Are you a non-confrontational person? The obvious answer is to simply tell them you don't want to help them. And you can phrase it however nicely you want.
'But it may be hard if you're a non-confrontational person. In which case, you simply need to be as unhelpful as you can. Reply to messages late. Don't send screenshots. Forget to place orders. Place wrong orders. At some point, they will realise they can't get what they want by asking you and will stop.'
Additionally, some users said that they were doubtful about the friend's claims, especially the part about not having a bank account. They pointed out that if the friend was indeed working full-time, it seemed incredibly hard to believe that they didn't have a local bank account. After all, companies typically deposit salaries directly into bank accounts, so it didn't make sense that someone with a job, especially a full-time one, wouldn't have one.
One explained, 'Are you sure you are not roped into money laundering? How is it possible for full-time employees in Singapore not to have bank accounts? No employers here will pay full-timers in cash. And it doesn't even need to be a local bank. So many merchants don't even accept cash now; how do they go around living in Singapore? Either your story is incomplete, or your friends are conning you big time.'
In other news, a Singaporean man has sparked a debate online after sharing that he doesn't quite understand why people often complain that public housing is 'unaffordable for low-income individuals.'
In a forum post that has since drawn widespread attention, he explained that, in his view, public housing is still relatively affordable, especially when compared to private properties.
'One thing I've always believed: shouldn't we buy what we can afford? If someone's income level only supports a two- or three-room flat, isn't that the realistic option? I don't quite understand when people say public housing is unaffordable, but at the same time aim for four-room flats or bigger, then turn around and blame the government when it's out of reach,' he explained.

Singapore's civil service must continue to innovate in the face of rising public expectations and global competition, said Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (July 8). Giving a speech at the opening of the Public Service Festival in One Punggol, Chan, who is also Minister for Defence, said that the Public Service as contributed much to Singapore's survival and success over the past 60 years — citing National Service and the Central Provident Fund as "key examples of our pioneering spirit". He added that while Singapore is also ranked highly in many global indices comparing quality of life and government services, other countries are catching up or have "overtaken us in certain areas". Chan gave an example of how Estonia has become the first county fully digitise its government services, and China is serving over a billion citizens with artificial intelligence-powered services. "These are all calls to action for us to continue to hone what we have done well, to keep improving so that we stay ahead of the curve… to attract those investments that will create good jobs and pay good wages for our people," he added. "My greatest concern is that we become complacent. Success must not become the albatross for our future." Chan said that among his prioritises, the Public Service must continue to innovate with citizens at the centre of "what we do". "Nobody enjoys going to the doctor and having to be asked the same question over and over again. Everyone expects them to tell the doctor once and the record will be there to be shared across different agencies," he said. "And that is the same standards we expect across all agencies." Chan said that there has been progress in the government agencies coordinating their services together to deliver a more "seamless and integrated experience" for the public. This includes ServiceSG centres which provide Singaporeans with access to services from across 25 different government agencies — from resetting Singpass accounts to filing taxes and passport renewals. Another way for the different government agencies coming together to maximise resources, according to Chan, is through building integrated lifestyle and community hubs like One Punggol and Our Tampines Hub. "We have swimming pools, a library and a ServiceSG centre here," he said. "It's a bit like a Swiss Army Knife. Chan said that such projects was not easy at first as it requires the different agencies to "synchronise their requirements and make compromises". "But imagine if we have done it differently, where each agency continues to only do things for themselves. First, it will have cost us much more. Second, it would have required much more land," he added. "But most importantly, our service delivery will be fragmented, and what the public can see and enjoy will also be fragmented." A total of 140 awards were presented at Tuesday's event to public agencies and officers for their initiatives and innovations. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) was awarded the Transformative Agency of the Year Award for implementing passport-less clearance at Singapore's air and sea checkpoints, as well as through the QR code system at the land checkpoints in Woodlands and Tuas. ICA said that its New Clearance Concept allows the authority to upskill the job roles of over 3,000 frontline officers, adding that it enables them to take on higher-value roles to better safeguard the borders. "ICA is honoured to receive the Transformative Agency of the Year Award, which recognises our efforts in transforming checkpoint operations and affirms our commitment to delivering a more seamless, efficient, and secure immigration clearance experience under the NCC," said Senior Assistant Commissioner Kelly Lim, director at ICA's Operations Division. "ICA will continue to refine and enhance our checkpoint operations to deliver a world class travel experience for travellers and keep Singapore's border secured." As for Carolina Lee from the People's Association (PA), serving the community meant more than wining the Exemplary Service Excellence award. The 59-year-old first joined PA in 1992 as a childcare teacher and is currently manning the counters at Toa Payoh East Community Club to help residents who need help. It was where she met Mr Lim, an elderly blind wheelchair user who first sought help with his CDC vouchers. She later volunteered after her working hours to take him to a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic days before Chinese New Year this year, and coordinated with a social worker to ensure that his meals are delivered uninterrupted during the holidays. Singtel, Lendlease break ground on new S$3 billion Comcentre

[SINGAPORE] Singtel and Lendlease broke ground on Tuesday (Jul 8) for what will be the telco's new Comcentre headquarters on its former site on Exeter Road. The building, being redeveloped at the cost of S$3 billion, will be the largest Grade-A office space in the Orchard Road precinct, taking up 110,000 square metres (sq m). The previous Comcentre had a gross floor area of 105,371 sq m. Singtel will be the anchor tenant, occupying 30 per cent of the total development area. Slated for completion in 2028, the project will have two 20-storey Grade-A office towers, covering 81,960 sq m in gross floor area. It will also feature 20,000 sq m of lifestyle and retail spaces, including Singtel's new flagship store, food and beverage (F&B) outlets, medical suites, a gym and an auditorium. The total net lettable space available for lease is about 54,000 sq m. The Business Times understands there has been 'strong interest from a broad spectrum of companies', though official marketing and leasing starts only in 2026. Singtel employees who used to work in the monolithic Orchard Road area landmark were relocated to SingPost Centre and other Singtel premises across the island in 2024, ahead of the demolition works. Sign Up Sign Up The new Comcentre coming up on the site will be open to the surrounding neighbourhood with a large sheltered walkway and a pedestrian thoroughfare lined with retail and F&B outlets. It will be connected to Somerset MRT station through a sheltered, above-ground link and another link at B2 level. Designed by New York-based architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox and landscape architect Field Operations, the project will feature the largest elevated urban park in central Singapore, at nearly a hectare in size. He added: 'The revitalised Comcentre will serve as a vibrant community hub with new public spaces and improved connectivity – bringing people from all walks of life together, supporting local businesses, and contributing to a more inclusive and dynamic Orchard Road for all Singaporeans.' The redevelopment was announced in 2022 when Singtel partially divested Comcentre to a joint venture (JV) company with Lendlease, with an eye on maximising the site's potential, increasing building efficiency, unlocking value from the property, and strengthening Singtel's financial position. Singtel holds 51 per cent of the JV, with Lendlease owning 49 per cent. Singtel's net profit for FY2025 rose to S$4.02 billion, up from S$795 million the year before, driven mainly by a net exceptional gain of S$1.55 billion from the partial divestment of Comcentre. The new development will incorporate AI-enabled robotics, smart-building infrastructure that adapts to its environment, and technology-enabled spaces designed for work and retail. It is on track to becoming Singapore's first development that is end-to-end carbon-neutral, encompassing its design, construction and operations. Measures include using low-carbon concrete and steel, and reusing 40 per cent of crushed concrete waste from existing structures. The project is also expected to earn three major green-building certifications. Minister Chee highlighted the use of a different contracting model, under which contractors are paid for the actual costs up to a fixed limit, with costs savings shared between developer and builder. Digital technology will streamline workflows, improve teamwork and boost efficiency throughout the project. Advanced construction methods, such as robotic installation system for elevators, are expected to reduce on-site labour by up to 30 per cent and speed up project completion by up to 20 per cent.

‘Not making enough to survive long': Tenants lament poor footfall, vacant units at Hao Mart's Taste Orchard

[SINGAPORE] Smaller businesses at Taste Orchard are struggling to make rent, with master tenant Hao Mart itself scaling down the food-focused mall's supermarket anchor tenant. This is barely a year and a half after the mall opened, with Hao Mart having signed a 7.5-year lease with landlord OG for all five levels of the former OG Orchard Point building. The grocery business has faced 'significant challenges' in recent years as operating costs rise, said Hao Mart's senior vice-president of operations Jupri Suep in response to queries from The Business Times. The stronger Singapore dollar is causing Singaporeans to spend more in Malaysia, he noted. 'This growing trend is putting pressure on the local retail sector, leading to intensified competition and a potential decline in domestic sales – even in prime areas such as Orchard.' Located at 160 Orchard Road, Taste Orchard opened in February 2024 to much fanfare, with long queues for food and beverage (F&B) players such as Warabimochi Kamakura. At the time, anchor tenant Eccellente by Hao Mart occupied three levels. But now, smaller tenants say they face poor business and low footfall, with some seeing no sales on weekdays. Sign Up Sign Up When BT visited at the start of July, there were vacant units on Level 1, 3 and 4. BT understands that at least three Level 3 units have been vacant since the mall opened. The shutters to the basement – occupied by Eccellente up till April – were down. Eccellente's non-food products have been 'strategically' relocated from the basement to Level 2, said Suep. This is part of ongoing efforts 'to enhance revenue at Taste Orchard, optimise space utilisation, improve operational efficiency and reduce overheads', he added. 'This move not only streamlines the layout, but also delivers a more seamless and elevated shopping experience for customers within the supermarket on the same floor.' PHOTO: PAIGE LIM, BT The basement unit has been listed on real estate website CommercialGuru since Jun 25, at a rental rate of S$180,000 a month. At about 20,000 square feet, it is advertised as a 'unique big space in Orchard for multi-concept', with a flexible lease. Several prospective tenants have expressed 'strong interest' in the space, said Suep. Four other units were also listed on Jun 25, with monthly rent ranging from S$9,700 to S$24,000. These include a fully fitted F&B ground unit near the entrance for S$18,000 a month, with a lease of three years. Lack of marketing The initial buzz surrounding the mall has cooled, with several tenants scaling down or leaving. Hao Mart has closed its FYI (Famous. Yummy. Irresistible) Kitchen – an initial mall highlight that included a live seafood station and butchery – and a community space on Level 2, meant to host cooking classes and events for chefs. This was due to 'low footfall' for both, said Suep. Part of the FYI Kitchen area has been taken over by Taste Myeongdong, a Korean food hall that opened this February. Irresistible) Kitchen – an initial mall highlight that included a live seafood station and butchery, where customers have their produce freshly cooked onsite and dine at a 30-seat area. PHOTO: BT FILE Tenants said there was a lack of marketing by the mall's management, with Taste Orchard remaining relatively unknown. Mohamed R opened North Indian cuisine restaurant Tea Chimes in December 2024, expecting 'good footfall' in the prime shopping belt. 'Unfortunately since day one, this has not been the case,' he said. 'Nobody seems to know about Taste Orchard.' A retailer on Level 3, who declined to be named, said: 'A lot of my customers who come here are very confused; they say they've not heard of this mall before.' 'It's a lot quieter than expected, and we don't really see any walk-in customers,' he added. His store, which opened in February 2024, has been doing its own social media marketing. On some weekdays, Chinese traditional dessert shop Tian Bu Shi Fang sees no customers. 'Business has not been good… it's been very quiet,' said owner Fang Yingxin in Mandarin. Even on weekends, she sees at best about 10 to 20 customers a day. Since opening in May, her sales have been unable to cover rent. Her lease runs till December 2026. Weak anchor tenant Businesses also attributed the poor footfall to Eccellente not being a strong anchor tenant, saying that its downsizing – and other vacant units – does not help Taste Orchard's image. A tenant on Level 1, who declined to be named, said: 'Isn't it weird to see the basement of a shopping mall in the middle of Orchard Road completely empty like that? It's the sort of thing that would chase people away.' Eccellente's grocery offerings have dwindled, she added. Last September, a video showing empty freezers and shelves at the supermarket went viral on TikTok. 'There's no shopping atmosphere here,' said the retailer on Level 3. 'I wouldn't think this is a shopping mall, because it's so empty and there's not much decor either.' The vacancies are 'in your face', he added, noting that other malls put up hoardings around empty units. 'As part of managing a retail mall, it is essential to secure suitable tenants who align with our overall tenant mix and have the financial capability to sustain rental commitments throughout the lease term,' he said. Eccellente has removed two rows of empty chillers to optimise its space on Level 2, as it previously had 'more chillers than necessary', he added. 'While this is still slightly more than our current needs, we are working closely with our partners to progressively utilise the space more effectively.' Some businesses may leave before their lease ends. Tea Chimes took over a three-year lease from previous tenant Chirashi King Kong, which moved out after six months. 'We're not making enough to survive long,' said Mohamed R. 'It's only been about seven months since we've opened, but we've had to come out with money to stay afloat. We can't stay for long, unless the building brings in more people.' He thinks that having more well-known F&B brands would help to attract customers, noting that current offerings lack diversity as they are mostly Korean or Japanese. 'If you want to be a food harbour, you need to bring more of the big players in to attract the crowd, then they might patronise some of the other smaller fishes. Everybody gets a share.' PHOTO: PAIGE LIM, BT Drawing footfall with events Hao Mart, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Hao Corp, runs a chain of convenience stores and supermarkets. Hao Mart has been in the red for two years, regulatory filings show. Its loss widened to S$32.8 million for the financial year ended March 2024, from a S$23.2 million loss in 2023. This was as revenue dropped to S$55.7 million, from S$84.2 million before. Hao Mart's management has received a formal update from just one Taste Orchard tenant about business performance, said Suep. Tenants on Level 3 and Level 4 – which include a spin studio, an education centre, a salon and aesthetics clinics – are 'doing fine' as they have established customer bases, he added. Tenants are expected to implement their own marketing strategies, he said. Hao Mart will provide on-site support to showcase them, with a focus 'on building and promoting the overall Taste Orchard brand identity'. To draw more footfall and generate income, Hao Mart has organised events at Taste Orchard since 2024, noted Suep. Each month, about two to three events are held across the basement as well as Levels 1, 3 and 4. These include flea markets, gaming zones and international fairs. These have drawn crowds, he added, noting Eccellente's grocery sales usually 'more than double' on event days.
