Why Tripadvisor Stock Is on the Map Today
Key Points Starboard Value just disclosed a 9% stake in Tripadvisor. The stock costs 38 times earnings, but profits are growing quickly, and so is free cash flow. Starboard scored a quick gain on Tripadvisor -- but the stock has even more room to rise. Tripadvisor (NASDAQ: TRIP) stock galloped ahead 18% through 11:05 a.m. ET Thursday after activist investor Starboard Value disclosed that it has taken a 9% stake in the travel advisor. Calling the company "undervalued" (at the time it bought the shares -- we'll have to see if it remains undervalued now that it's up 17%), and "an attractive investment opportunity," Starboard plans to meet with management to discuss ways to improve the stock's price even further. Although I have to say, a 17% one-day prop is already quite an improvement! Momentum investing Tripadvisor's an excellent prospect for the kind of stock that can be moved suddenly by a surprise headline. It was valued at less than $1.8 billion before today's announcement, so it only cost Starboard $160 million to build its 9% stake. After the announcement, the stock has already gained more value than Starboard put into it. Is Tripadvisor a buy? Priced north of $2 billion today, Tripadvisor represents a potentially compelling value proposition. The company's debt load is modest -- only about $105 million. And while the stock costs nearly 38 times trailing earnings, analysts forecast Tripadvisor will also earn nearly $105 million next year, with even stronger free cash flow. Even valued just on the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profit, the stock's forward P/E ratio is only about 20. And next year's earnings are expected to grow 40% compared to this year's. Paying 20 times earnings for a 40% grower? Yeah, that sounds like a pretty "attractive investment opportunity" to me, too. Should you invest $1,000 in Tripadvisor right now? Before you buy stock in Tripadvisor, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Tripadvisor wasn't one of them. Why Meta Platforms Stock Jumped 14% in June
Key Points Meta Platforms pushed further into artificial intelligence (AI) last month with a deal to take a 49% stake in Scale AI. The company also benefited from lower tensions around the trade war. Shares of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) were moving higher again in June as the social media giant benefited from the broader uptrend in the stock market, and investors reacted to Meta's deal to take a 49% stake in Scale AI, a data-labeling start-up, for $14 billion. By the end of the month, Meta stock had finished up 14%, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. As you can see from the chart, the stock gained in two separate stages, in the beginning and end of the month. META data by YCharts Meta pushes deeper into AI Meta's ambitions in AI became clearer last month as the company made a splash with the Scale AI deal. The move gives the company near-50% ownership of a promising AI start-up, and also brings Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang into the Meta fold. Wang will head up a new research lab working on superintelligence. Additionally, other news reports emerged about Meta's poaching AI talent from OpenAI, and it also reportedly tried to buy Perplexity, the AI search-focused start-up now valued at $14 billion, as well as Safe Superintelligence, another AI start-up. Finally, the company is considering raising $29 billion to fund its data center expansion push as part of its AI ambitions. Early in the month, Meta also signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy, showing its commitment to securing an adequate source of energy as AI needs grow. On the device front, the company also introduced Oakley Meta glasses, which it called a new category of Performance AI glasses, featuring a built-in camera, open-ear speakers, and water resistance. Meanwhile, the stock also benefited from cooling tensions around the trade war, as well as solid economic data showing the job market continuing to expand and inflation remaining in check. Since nearly all the company's revenue comes from digital advertising, the business is sensitive to the broader economy, so signs of continued growth are good for Meta. What's next for Meta? Meta's price-to-earnings ratio has risen to 28 following last month's gains, but that still looks like a fair price to pay for a stock that dominates the social media sector, has a huge competitive advantage in digital advertising, and is investing heavily into its strong AI division. We'll hear from Meta at the end of the month when it reports second-quarter earnings. Analysts are expecting another strong quarter, with revenue increasing 14% to $44.55 billion and earnings per share rising from $5.16 to $5.84. If Meta can maintain that kind of growth, the stock should continue to move higher. Don't miss this second chance at a potentially lucrative opportunity Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you'll want to hear this. On rare occasions, our expert team of analysts issues a 'Double Down' stock recommendation for companies that they think are about to pop. If you're worried you've already missed your chance to invest, now is the best time to buy before it's too late. And the numbers speak for themselves: Nvidia: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2009, you'd have $407,818!* Apple: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2008, you'd have $40,330!* Netflix: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2004, you'd have $692,914!* Right now, we're issuing 'Double Down' alerts for three incredible companies, available when you join Stock Advisor, and there may not be another chance like this anytime soon. TSX Making Record Highs a Habit
Canada's main stock index opened higher to hit a record high on Thursday as investors assessed domestic and U.S. economic data, while a U.S.-Vietnam trade pact renewed optimism around global trade deals ahead of the July 9 tariff deadline. The TSX Composite Index gained 62.16 points to start Thursday at 26,931.82. The Canadian dollar was flat at 73.63 cents U.S. ON BAYSTREET The TSX Venture Exchange accumulated 2.95 points to 754.80. The 12 TSX subgroups were evenly divided, with health-care, financials and information technology each taking 0.5%. The half-dozen laggards were weighed most by telecoms, down 1.1%, energy, off 0.2%, and gold, fading 0.1%. ON WALLSTREET U.S. stocks rose on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite hitting fresh record highs, after a better-than-expected jobs report fueled optimism the U.S. economy was hanging tough despite fast-changing trade policy and geopolitics. The Dow Jones Industrials flew 292.14 points to 44,776.97 The much-broader index strengthened 43.37 points to 6,270.79 The NASDAQ Composite leaped 184.88 points to 20,578.01. Analysts at Needham upgraded Meta Platforms to hold from underperform, saying in a note to clients that the Facebook-parent company has better labor productivity than eight other Big Tech and media peers that the agency covers. All three major U.S. averages are on pace to close out the week in positive territory. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite are each 1.5% higher week to date, while the Dow is at a 2.1% gain for the period. Non-farm payrolls rose by 147,000 in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday. That's above the Dow Jones forecast from economists for 110,000 and the upwardly revised 144,000 in May. The unemployment rate also fell to 4.1%, while economists had projected an increase to 4.3%. Thursday's report comes a day after ADP released data showing that private payrolls decreased by 33,000 last month, raising fears that perhaps the economy was starting to stumble under the weight of rapid policy changes out of Washington. Thursday's official government data knocked down that notion. Investors are also following along the progress on Trump's tax megabill, which finally passed the Senate Tuesday and has since returned to the House. The bill is now headed for a final vote after the Republican-controlled House advanced the legislation Thursday. Thursday will be a shortened trading session, with the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ closing at 1 p.m. ET. U.S. markets are closed on Friday for Independence Day. Prices for the 10-year treasury were lower, raising yields to 4.35% from Wednesday's 4.29%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions. Oil prices docked 20 cents to $67.21 U.S. a barrel.
