Leopardess mowed down by speeding SUV on Kheri road
The car involved in the incident was later found in Palia's Indira Nagar locality, but the driver fled and is yet to be arrested.
North Kheri divisional forest officer Saurish Sahai said, "The leopardess sustained injuries to her head, face and neck. The carcass was sent to the forest range headquarters where two veterinary officers conducted an autopsy in the presence of representatives from the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the chief wildlife warden of UP, and the field director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve."
As the SUV hit the leopardess, its number plate fell on the road, helping officials trace the vehicle. Sahai said, "The car was impounded and the driver has been charged under the appropriate sections of the Wildlife Protection Act."
Forest officials have been grappling with repeated wildlife deaths on roads cutting through protected areas in and around Dudhwa. In Feb this year, a tiger was killed by a speeding car near the Mailani range.
The frequency of such fatalities has led to the installation of night-vision cameras, speed-limit signs, and automated challan systems across Dudhwa and Kishanpur ranges since Sept last year. But despite these measures, major accidents involving wildlife have continued.
Principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) Anuradha Vemuri called an urgent meeting in Lucknow on Tuesday to discuss roadkill prevention strategies.
She told TOI, "The Bhira-Palia road is already equipped with a series of speed breakers, rumble strips, in addition to entry and exit checkpoints to regulate vehicle speed and monitor their operations on the road. An adequate number of signage with permitted speed limits and other instructions have also been displayed along the road.

She added that Dudhwa officials had been asked to coordinate with police patrols to strengthen vehicle surveillance. Additional checkpoints and signage would be installed in other tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries in collaboration with PWD to reduce animal deaths under the wheels.

Azad faces death threat amid controversies, FIR filed
Meerut: Chandrashekhar Azad, MP from Nagina and national president of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), recently received a death threat via the party's social media helpline, warning that Azad would be killed within ten days. An FIR was registered at Nagina police station under BNS section 351(4) (criminal intimidation through anonymous communication) against an unknown individual, and a police investigation has been launched. Parvez Pashi, district convenor of the party's Muslim Bhaichara Committee and the complainant in the case, said on Wednesday, "On June 29, our helpline received a threatening message to eliminate Azad within 10 days. Since then, his life has been under constant threat." Confirming the case, SP Bijnor Abhishek Jha said, "We have filed the FIR and investigation has begun." The threat comes amid two major controversies involving Azad. A PhD scholar from Indore has accused him of emotional and sexual exploitation during a four-year relationship, alleging that he used her politically and abandoned her before the elections. She has since launched a platform to support women who claim to have been misled by public figures. Secondly, violent clashes broke out in Prayagraj after police stopped Azad from meeting Dalit families of rape victims. His supporters allegedly clashed with the police, pelting stones and torching several vehicles. Over 65 people were arrested, many of whom now face charges under the National Security Act (NSA) and Gangster Act. This is not the first time Azad was threatened. In June 2023, he narrowly escaped an attack when shots were fired at his vehicle and a bullet grazed his stomach. Days earlier, a social media post had warned that he would be targeted in broad daylight by Thakurs of Amethi. After the attack, another post on the same page claimed Azad had been shot in the waist and warned that "next time he may not survive", while also threatening protests if any innocent Rajput was implicated in the incident. In connection with the 2023 attack, UP police arrested four suspects from Shahzadpur, Haryana. Three of the accused -- Prashant Singh, Vikas and Lavish -- were from UP, while the fourth, Vikas Gondar, was from Haryana.

30kg of sea cucumbers seized in Nagai
Trichy: The Coastal Security Group seized 30kg of processed sea cucumbers from an illegal unit near Nagapattinam on Wednesday. Sources said the CSG received information that a group is processing sea cucumbers near the CSI Cemetery near Keechankuppam. A marine police team led by sub-inspector K Ananthavadivel searched the area and found the processed sea cucumbers. However, the culprits involved in the crime fled the spot before police came there. The team retrieved the echinoderms and handed them over the forest department as per the direction of ADSP K Sivasankar. Forest ranger (in-charge) A Joseph Daniel registered a case, and further investigation is on. On March 22, a CSG team retrieved around 600kg of sea cucumbers from the same place, but no arrest has been made in the case as well. Sea cucumber species are considered 'endangered' and 'vulnerable' under the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Some individuals process and smuggle them to foreign countries for alleged medicinal purposes.

30 kg of processed sea cucumber, meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, seized in Nagapattinam
In a coordinated operation, the Coastal Security Group police in Nagapattinam district seized 30 kilograms of processed sea cucumber, allegedly meant for illegal export to Sri Lanka. The seized consignment, valued at approximately ₹4 lakh, has been handed over to the Forest Department for further action. Acting on a tip-off about sea cucumbers being readied for smuggling, Additional Superintendent of Police (Coastal Security Group) Sivasankaran directed a team led by Inspector Ramesh Kumar and Sub-Inspector Anandavadivel to investigate the area near Salt Road's Puthu Theru in Keechankuppam. Upon arriving at the location on Wednesday, the police spotted a group of individuals who fled upon seeing the team. A subsequent search of the premises revealed 30 kg of processed sea cucumbers concealed and prepared for illegal transport overseas. Sea cucumber is a protected marine species under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and its harvest and trade is banned in India. However, it remains in high demand in international markets, especially in parts of Southeast Asia, due to its perceived medicinal and culinary value.
