Wrestler-turned-MLA Vinesh Phogat becomes a mother, welcomes baby boy with husband Somvir Rathee
Her elder brother Harvinder Phogat confirmed the joyous news. 'Vinesh gave birth to a baby boy this morning. Both mother and baby are healthy. It's a moment of great joy for our family,' Harvinder told The Indian Express. He also revealed that Vinesh will soon return to Somvir's home, adding, 'We will all visit her soon. Everyone in our village, Balali, is excited to welcome her and the baby.'
Back in March, Vinesh had shared her pregnancy announcement on social media, captioning a photo with: 'Our love story continues with a new chapter,' accompanied by baby and heart emojis, a post that drew warm wishes from fans and fellow athletes alike.
This joyful news arrives after an emotional and turbulent phase in Vinesh's life. At the Paris Olympics last year, she faced heartbreak after being disqualified from the women's 50kg final due to exceeding the weight limit. She later described the incident as the 'biggest wound' of her life, though she kept the door open for a future return to wrestling.
Vinesh has won two bronze medals at the World Championships, with an Asian Games gold and three Commonwealth Games gold medals in a celebrated career. Switch to politics
Since then, her journey has taken a political turn. Vinesh joined the Indian National Congress in September and successfully contested the Haryana Assembly elections from the Julana constituency, defeating BJP's Yogesh Kumar.
On Tuesday, party colleague Kumari Selja extended her congratulations: 'Hearty congratulations and best wishes… I pray the newborn brings happiness and good health to the family.'
Vinesh was also at the forefront of the wrestlers' protest against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual harassment.

'Jinnahwadi Party': BJP Slams Congress After Leader Calls Sikkim A Country
Sikkim, which celebrated 50 years of its integration with India less than two months ago, has been called a "neighbouring country" by a Congress leader, sparking furore and prompting a scathing attack from the BJP as well as the ruling party in the state. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Kumar, who is a former MP from Jamshedpur, was talking about India's "deteriorating relations" with neighbouring countries and blaming the BJP-led government at the Centre for the situation. He cited examples of Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and ended up naming Sikkim as well. On Wednesday, Mr Kumar took to X and apologised for the "slip of the tongue" and "small human error". "Yesterday, in my press conference on 'SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) 400 crore scam', when I was speaking on the deteriorating relations with our neighbouring countries, I accidentally took the name of a state. Pouncing on the remark, the BJP hit out at both Mr Kumar and the Congress, accusing it of being a "Jinnahwadi party". "The statement made by Ajoy Kumar that Sikkim is not an integral part of India and is, in fact, a neighbouring nation, shows how he has insulted not just Sikkim but the entire Northeast. Congress has always been against the Northeast. We have seen they have bombed one of the states in the Northeast. They have said bye-bye to Assam in the 1960s," BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla told news agency ANI. "Congress is following in the footsteps of Jinnah. It is a 'Jinnahwadi' party. Just like Jinnah wanted an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat," he alleged. 'Complete Lack Of Understanding' The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), which is the ruling party in Sikkim, said Dr Kumar's remark was deeply hurtful to the people of the state. Emphasising that Sikkim became an integral part of India 50 years ago, Yougan Tamang, who is the press secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), said, "The nation knows that Sikkim merged with India in 1975. For a national party leader to make such a blunder reflects a complete lack of understanding of the country's geography and history. It is disheartening and insulting to the sentiments of the people of Sikkim," Mr Tamang said. Urging the Congress to take strict action against Mr Kumar, Mr Tamang added, "Being in politics comes with the duty of awareness. Unscientific and unauthentic statements damage national unity and mislead the public... India is a union of diverse states, each with its own rich history. Political leaders must do their homework before addressing the media."

Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP claimed on Wednesday that the visit of Congress National General Secretary and Karnataka incharge Randeep Singh Surjewala to the state is aimed at preparing the ground to oust Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Addressing a Press conference at the BJP state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, BJP State President and MLA, B.Y. Vijayendra alleged that Surjewala had come to the state to prepare the ground for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's resignation and though he has camped in the state he has shown no concern about the failure of this corrupt government. He claimed that Surjewala was speaking to legislators to gather their opinion and the competition for the CM's post was intensifying and the state would witness political horse-trading. Referring to Ramanagara Congress MLA Iqbal Ansari's statement that Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar has the support of 100 MLAs and should be the next CM, Vijayendra said that senior Congress MLAs like B.R. Patil and Raju Kage are also openly speaking against the Chief Minister. "The CM has lost the confidence of even his own party MLAs," he asserted, and appealed to the Governor to take note of possible horse-trading. Responding to the Chief Minister's remark that 35–40 deaths in Hassan were possibly due to COVID vaccination, Vijayendra asked, 'Was COVID vaccine administered only in Hassan? The vaccine was given to crores across India and exported to countries around the world.' He urged the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the deaths in Hassan and condemned the CM's statement as irresponsible. He also urged the government to convene an emergency meeting and ensure adequate medicine stock at the taluk and district levels. Commenting on Minister Priyank Kharge's statement regarding a possible ban on the RSS, Vijayendra ridiculed it as "a daydream of a pauper." He sarcastically stated that even Mallikarjun Kharge, who is Priyank's father and the National President of the Congress party doesn't believe that the Congress will come to power. He added that not even senior Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi believe the Congress can return to power at the Centre. He further stated that the RSS is a nationalist organization, and even Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru welcomed the Sangh's contributions during the India-China war and allowed it to participate in the Republic Day parade. "Nehru and Indira Gandhi had banned the RSS, but it was later revoked. Calling for another ban reflects a lack of historical understanding," he said. Vijayendra hailed the Karnataka High Court's order transferring the investigation into the Valmiki Tribal Development Corporation case to the CBI as a victory for the BJP's fight. "This is a major judgment. Bigger names will be exposed. The BJP welcomes the verdict," he stated. He also claimed that due to BJP's sustained pressure, CM Siddaramaiah was forced to drop Minister B. Nagendra from the Cabinet. 'The CM is now desperate to bring him back. The media knows very well that the CM himself is involved in the scam. Money could not have gone out of state without Finance Department approval,' he alleged. Vijayendra said the situation in the state is deteriorating daily, the administration has collapsed, and Congress MLAs are locked in a power struggle. "The race for the CM's chair is intensifying. As a result, no developmental work is happening, and the government is ignoring farmers' issues," he criticized.

He noted that 58 countries currently play Kho Kho and the goal is to expand to 90 nations this year, after which they will present their case to the International Olympic Committee. He expressed confidence that Kho Kho would be part of the Asian Games in 2030 and the Olympics in 2032, and committed to leaving no stone unturned to achieve this goal.
