Three players could miss Man United vs Aston Villa as Ruben Amorim looks for Europa League response

Yahoo25-05-2025
Manchester United will put a book end on a forgettable 2024/25 season this afternoon when they welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford.
While Villa are looking for a win that could secure them Champions League football next season, United are looking to avoid finishing in 17th place in the Premier League table.
United just want this season to end and Ruben Amorim will be keen to get a full pre-season with his players as they look to right the wrongs of this season next term.

Ahead of the game, here is a look at the latest United injury situation.
Injury: foot
The Frenchman was forced off in United's 2-0 defeat to West Ham United a fortnight ago after going down not long after half-time clutching his left foot.
He returned to face Tottenham in the Europa League final but Amorim has now hinted he won't be risked against Villa.
"There are some situations, like Leny," Amorim said.
"We have to be careful. We had that in the last [home] game before the final, I think it was West Ham, on his foot.
"We're going to take care of some situations so as not to compromise next season. The rest, we want to win the game so we are going to put a squad together."
Possible return date: Unknown
Injury: knee
De Ligt did not train alongside the rest of his teammates on Tuesday morning and subsequently missed the clash with Spurs. He has missed the last four games after being forced off against Brentford earlier this month with a knee injury.
He trained alone with a fitness coach on Tuesday morning and althought he travelled to Spain to support his teammates, he will not be available to face Villa.
Possible return date: Unknown.
Injury: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
Martinez is a long-term absentee after rupturing his ACL in United's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford at the start of February. He soon underwent successful surgery and is well underway with his recovery.
United have not put a specific timeframe on how long he will be out for, but he will not feature again this side of the summer. ACL injuries usually take around six months to fully recover from.
Possible return date: August.

Napoli Make Late Swoop For Atalanta Star But Inter Milan Remain Favourites For His Signature

Inter Milan are facing a late threat from Serie A champions Napoli in their pursuit of Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman but remain confident of securing a deal. As reported in today's newspaper edition of Corriere dello Sport, and via Antonio Conte's Napoli are also keen on landing Nigeria international Lookman and have submitted a proposal to Atalanta. The former Everton and Fulham player appears set to leave Bergamo this summer and Inter made the first move to sign him, with Napoli's interest not thought to have edged the Nerazzurri out of pole position just yet. However, Napoli have offered Lookman a higher wage than Inter, with the €5 million per year salary more lucrative than the €4m proposed by the Nerazzurri. Inter are optimistic that he will join them, but are yet to find an agreement with Atalanta over a transfer fee and this has given Napoli room to jump in. Napoli have turned their attention to Lookman after encountering difficulties in securing a deal for Bologna's Dan Ndoye, as he looks set to join Nottingham Forest.

Hearts have 'very good chance' of challenging for trophies

We asked for your views after Derek McInnes' Hearts cruised to another Premier Sports Cup victory at lower-league Stirling. Here's what some of you said: Norrie: Went to the game, fantastic following with three stands full of Hearts fans. We once again started really well and if it hadn't been for a couple of smart saves from their keeper in the first half this could have been a much greater scoreline. Three games now without VAR and what a difference to the flow of the game and the mood of the crowd. Bin VAR and give us our game back! Stuart: Hearts impressed first half but were flat after the break. Oisin McEntee was pushed wide right after the break which left Cammy Devlin to shore up midfield on his own, and consequently the defence struggled to find the right ball forward. Hearts looked good on the flanks but lacked a spark in the middle up front, although Claudio Braga looked lively as did James Wilson when he came on. Jim: I still feel McInnes is trying to sort out his best XI before the league season gets under way. There have been a lot of new signings and this cup section against weaker teams gives him the time to sort out his strongest team, his best system, but also builds a bit of confidence - successive wins always do that. The real test will come when Aberdeen visit Tynecastle at the beginning of August. I think we have a very good chance of challenging for the league and the cups, but do the players believe that and are they hungry enough to seriously challenge the Old Firm? Alfo: Cracking start to the season from the JTs. Every player that comes on to the pitch knows they've a point to prove if they want to keep the jersey. Unlike last year, can't see us carrying any deadwood as someone else will step up and once the other wingers arrive we're in for a great season. Chris: It's easy to look at these games as easy against lower division teams, but then being a Jambo I've watched us struggle for years against these types of teams. The first half was just dominance of speed, passing and movement and we could have been six up going into half time. The second half levels dropped but remained professional. It all depends if we can keep this level going up against a very solid Aberdeen side in a few weeks.
