NWU warns students of admissions fraud

The Citizen19-06-2025
The NWU has warned prospective students to be vigilant of possible admissions fraud.
In a Facebook post the university noted that scams are being run, where individuals claim to be able to help students secure a place at the university for a fee.
According to Louis Jacobs, director of corporate communications at the NWU, the university does not charge any fee for assistance in admissions.
'Only the official Admissions Office can assist with applications. Report any suspicious activity to report-fraud@nwu.ac.za,' Jacobs said.

Geyser sparks ceiling fire: Quick-thinking Empangeni neighbours save family

An Empangeni family had a close call with a house fire last weekend, which was quickly contained with help from their neighbours. According to the Zululand Observer, Phakamani Mabaso (53) recalled that his family was alerted to something burning at around 20:30 last Saturday. His wife, Ziphozethu Mabaso (50), smelt something burning but couldn't find what it was. '…but we couldn't see it. We switched off the lights. There was no flame, then suddenly there were flames coming from the ceiling,' said Phakamani. 'We threw a bucket and another one. We screamed for help and the neighbours came. They responded very fast,' he said. 'Without them…,' said Ziphozethu, who trailed off, with her young daughter Sethu (9) standing close beside her. 'Fortunately we were not sleeping. I don't even want to think about it.' Next-door neighbour Johan Horn was relaxing at home with his family, playing cards, when he heard Sethu's call for help. 'I heard a small child shout, 'Please help us!' So I ran to the stoep assuming someone was attacking them, but their house was on fire.' He jumped over the wall and discovered their geyser had burst, leaking onto electrical wires. 'I told them the first thing was to switch off their power. The family was frantic and rushing left to right. Phakamani told me afterwards that he's so glad someone came to keep him level-headed.' Johan's brother Ferdinand and nephew Juan de Kock also rushed to help. Johan tried to use a hosepipe, but the water was just trickling. 'Someone gave me a full bottle of water and I was standing in the dining room, just throwing. It doused 80% of the fire.' The Empangeni Fire Department arrived shortly after the blaze was contained and assessed that there was no further risk. However, the miracle of the story is that the neighbours weren't even meant to be home. Ferdinand was visiting from France and Juan was visiting from Johannesburg. 'We were supposed to be on a church camp this weekend, but everything was blocking us to go – we think this was the reason.' Phakamani said: 'We are grateful to our neighbours, we really appreciate their help.' In case of fire emergencies, contact the Empangeni Fire Department on 035 907 5723. The Khayelitsha girl was reported missing on Tuesday evening after she failed to return home. She was last seen at a family friend's place. Tragically, the next morning, a South African Police Service (Saps) sniffer dog led investigators to a nearby residence on Sindwadwa Street, Kuyasa, Khayelitsha, just six houses away from Lolitha's home. Khayelitsha girl's dead body found six houses away from home The girl was found with visible head injuries, and she was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. Investigators also discovered blood on a mop and the floor at the scene. Further investigation led to the arrest of two suspects: Odwa Jack (33) and Nokuthula Matyenisi (33). The state presented disturbing preliminary results to a courtroom packed with law enforcement officers, community members, and media representatives. 'According to the prosecution, the child was found with a screwdriver lodged in her head and a sock in her mouth,' said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Piet Smit. Postmortem results prompt rape charge Blood was discovered not only in the accused's home but also in Accused 1 Odwa Jack's car. 'Postmortem results also revealed the presence of semen, prompting the addition of a rape charge,' Smit added. The accused appeared in court briefly before the matter was remanded to 1 August for further investigation. Investigating Officer Warrant Officer Msolo arrested both suspects on the same day at the scene of the crime. 'It's become a high-profile case, but my focus is on investing and bringing justice for the child,' he said. Bringing justice for Lolitha While the community was protesting outside, Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina told broadcasters there is no space for crime in the Khayelitsha community. 'We will unite as the community of Ward 99 and Khayelitsha broadly to fight against crime,' Mqina said. He added that discovering the child had also been raped during the brutal attack was both shocking and deeply upsetting. We couldn't even say anything because it hurt us so much to hear that she was also raped,' the community leader said. Meanwhile, anti-GBV group Ilitha Labantu called for swift justice following Jack and Matyenisi's arrest. 'The murder of a child is a heartbreaking tragedy and a painful reflection of a society lacking effective protective systems for its most vulnerable. It exposes the gaps in community safety and the absence of coordinated responses needed to prevent violence against children,' the organisation said. 'The circumstances surrounding Lolitha's death are not isolated; they are part of a pattern of escalating brutality that must be met with coordinated action and urgency.' Anti-GBV, womens' rights groups call for justice Lady Liberty SA called on South Africans to join them in seeking justice for Lolitha. 'We stand with her family, the community, and every child who deserves safety and protection. Let's raise our voices for change,' stated the NPO that extends access to justice to all women.
