Bengaluru: The legendary Kapil Dev on Thursday expressed his anguish at the death of 11 fans during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations here, saying 'lives are more important than celebration' and advised everyone to take proper precautions in future.
Nearly two and half lakh people thronged the areas near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday to catch a glimpse of their idols but the ensuing chaos caused the death of 11 people, besides leaving scores of others injured.

'I feel very bad about that. I think we have to learn from each other. Next time something like this (victory parade) happens, people should be more conscious. People do make a mistake,' Kapil told PTI on the sidelines of a corporate event organised by the Arche Global Private Limited.
The 1983 World Cup-winning India captain urged the teams and other stakeholders to keep sanity while organising events of such magnitude.
'Mistake should not be to that scale where you are having fun and you lose lives. In the future, if any team wins, keep it calm. Lives are more important than celebration. Let's put it that way,' he added.
Kapil hoped India would come out victorious in the upcoming five-match Test tour to England.
'They are a good side. Cricket is a team game and if they play as a team then they will get good results. Whether it is Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah… it is not about individuals, play as a team. That's more important. Good luck to them, and hope they come back victorious,' he said.
The former all-rounder said he is now more occupied with golf — as a player and an administrator.
'I think cricket can be played only up to a certain age, you know, certain sports like tennis, football, you can't play at the age of 50 or 60. But when I started playing golf, I felt that one can play, as long as you want. And that's wonderful, as a sportsman, if you keep on playing something.

'Golf has given me that kick, that I can compete with myself,' said the 66-year-old, who is also the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India.

Ex-CSK Wicketkeeper To Replace Rishabh Pant In Indian Team For 5th ENG Test: Report

Narayan Jagadeesan is a wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu. In 52 first-class matches played so far, he has scored 3373 runs. Former Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan is reportedly set to replace Rishabh Pant in India's squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Pant suffered a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), and due to that, he will miss the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England. The fifth Test is scheduled to take place at The Oval from July 31 to August 4. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (July 24), 'The right-handed keeper batter from Tamil Nadu is almost certain to be added to the squad. An announcement is expected soon." 'The selectors and the team management were looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential option and it later emerged that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand is not available," the report added. Ishan, who last played a Test match for India in July 2023 against the West Indies in Port of Spain, according to a report in Times of India, is dealing with an ankle injury and has 10 stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty. 'Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty," a source tracking the development was quoted as saying by TOI on Thursday. 'Selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed, and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle," the source added. Jagadeesan has played a total of 52 first-class matches so far and has scored 3373 runs. His batting average is 47.50 and he has 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries to his credit. In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 674 runs in eight matches for Tamil Nadu. His batting average was 56.16 and he crossed the 100-run mark twice in addition to scoring five fifties. Among wicketkeeper-batter's only Vidarbha's Akshay Wadkar (722 runs at 45.12 in 10 matches) scored more runs than him. Jagadeesan's record in IPL In the cash-rich Indian Premier League, Jagadeesan has played a total of 13 matches for two teams—Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In seven matches for CSK across two seasons, he scored 73 runs, and in six matches for KKR in IPL 2023, he amassed a total of 89 runs. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 17:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Bad news for Team India, star player from Kavya Maran's SRH was replacing Rishabh Pant but…

The latest to join the list is India vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who is reportedly out for six weeks due to a fractured toe. Pant injured his toe on Day 1 of the 4th Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. The Indian vice-captain had retired hurt on 37 and is unlikely to play any more part in the fourth Test. According to a report in Indian Express newspaper, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Jharkhand wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan had been called up by the BCCI selectors to join the Indian squad in England ahead of fifth Test next week. But there is more bad news for BCCI and the Indian team as even Ishan Kishan is reportedly injured. Kishan had turned out for Nottinghamshire in a couple of matches in County Championships this year but he has got injured in an accident. Ishan Kishan injured in a scooty accident According to a report in TOI, Kishan has got injured in an accident on a scooty. 'Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty,' a source close to Ishan Kishan informed TOI. 'The selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle,' the source added in the report. Ishan had an impressive run with Nottinghamshire this season. He notched up scores of 87 and 77 against Yorkshire and Somerset in the two matches and was also impressive behind the stumps. The SRH wicketkeeper is now back at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to recover from his injuries. Ishan Kishan scored his maiden IPL century this year The 27-year-old was signed up by Kavya Maran's Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 11.25 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Ishan justified the faith of SRH, scoring his maiden IPL century in their opening game of the season against Rajasthan Royals. However, he trailed off for most of the remaining season, apart from scoring 94 not out against IPL 2025 champions RCB towards the end of the season. Kishan ended up with 354 runs from 14 matches at a strike-rate of over 152. Rishabh Pant available to 'bat as per team requirements' Meanwhile, the BCCI have announced that injured Rishabh Pant will be available to bat for Team India in the fourth Test at Manchester as per the 'requirements' of the team. 'Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,' a BCCI statement read.

"Did Nothing Wrong": Ex-India Star Defends Shubman Gill Over Lord's Test Row

Shubman Gill's aggressive approach has sparked a debate but former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel says it's not new and lauded the young captain for his assertiveness and clarity in executing plans during the ongoing England series. Gill had fired a verbal salvo at Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test after he and his opening partner Ben Duckett arrived 90 seconds late to the crease towards the end of the third day of the Test. India had managed to equal England's first innings total of 387, and wanted to squeeze in two overs in the remaining six minutes of play. However, that wasn't possible as the English openers took their time to get ready, and Gill exchanged words with England openers. The India skipper later called the delay "not in the spirit of the game." Asked if Gill's aggressive stance was surprising, Patel, who served as assistant coach of Gill-led Gujarat Titans in the IPL, said, "No, it's not. We've seen him do this in the IPL too. This sport is about expressing emotions as long as you don't cross the line, and I don't think Shubman crossed the line at all." "It was clear how slowly the English batsmen were walking in. Teams like England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa often use the term 'spirit of the game' conveniently. "So, there was nothing wrong with Gill asking the English media if it's okay to come to bat 90 seconds late. That was a deliberate attempt. I don't think Shubman did anything wrong," Patel told reporters during a JioHotstar virtual interaction. On Gill's India captaincy, he said, "This is new to him and he's improving. With Gujarat Titans, whatever I've observed about him, he's been very assertive. He knows what he wants. He's very clear with his plans and ideas. I'm sure with the time, you will see very much improvement in his captaincy also." Under Gill's captaincy, India won the second Test at Birmingham and were in a strong position in the third before losing the game by 22 runs. "I thought he was very good compared to the first Test. He lacks experience leading Test or four-day games, but no one is born a captain. "It's good to see that Shubman's been very good. He doesn't look confused on the field as a captain, opposed to what he was in first Test match. But it's good to see that he is on the right path," said Patel. Sai Sudharsan, dropped after the opening Test, scored his maiden Test half-century — a patient 61 — as India posted 264 for four on day one of the fourth Test. He was replaced by experienced Karun Nair in the second and third Tests before returning to the XI in the fourth. "Despite good domestic seasons, Nair couldn't convert starts into big scores. Now India is backing a youngster, which is fine. After eight years away, you don't usually get many chances. Sai made the most of his opportunity with a fifty. Knowing him, he'd be disappointed not to have converted it into a hundred," said Patel. Asked if Sai has the potential to become a regular all-format batter, Parthiv said, "The potential is immense. We've seen him bat with conviction in the IPL, winning the Orange Cap and striking at a high rate. He's shown promise in Test cricket too." Patel also expressed support for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in the playing XI. "I personally feel India should play Kuldeep Yadav. The team seems to prefer an extra batter, which is why Kuldeep isn't finding a place. But I believe India should find room for him to have four attacking bowlers," he said.
