Diogo Jota's heartwarming message of support to father of Southport stabbing victim as he ran London Marathon in her memory

Daily Mail03-07-2025
Late Liverpool star Diogo Jota has been characterised as a kind and humble soul in the hours since he died in a horrifying crash on a Spanish dual carriageway.
But the 28-year-old forward's capacity for compassion was probably best exemplified earlier this year with a simple gesture of good luck for a fellow father - albeit one in a situation no parent would ever want to be in.
Sergio Aguiar, the father of nine-year-old Southport stabbing victim Alice da Silva Aguiar, was gearing up to run the London Marathon in his daughter's memory, raising funds for a playground to be built in her name at her school.
Running 26 miles is hard enough - not least in the tragic circumstances in which Sergio found himself.
But in the weeks ahead of the marathon, late Liverpool and one-time Porto FC forward Jota took the time to prepare a special message for Sergio - which was broadcast to him as a surprise live on television.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast in March, one month before the race, Sergio told the programme that he was raising the funds for Churchtown Primary School because it had been a 'second home' to her.
'People are so kind,' Sergio had said of the local community in Southport in the months after the shocking and devastating attack which unfolded last August.
'They come up to me and say, "Well done, the playground will be amazing".'
However, he probably had not expected to hear from one of his heroes, whose name is emblazoned on a Porto FC shirt he keeps at home, as the interview ended.
Jota, alongside fellow Portuguese footballer and Everton striker Beto, had prepared messages to be played to Sergio live on air.
'Many, many people are supporting you, from all walks of life,' presenter Charlie Stayt told him.
'You're going to hear from two people who have good-luck messages for you, two footballers you will know who are both Portuguese.'
Jota - himself a father of three children - then appeared on screen.
Filming from Liverpool's training facilities on his phone, he smiled warmly as he said: 'Hello Sergio, I just heard you were about to run the London Marathon for an amazing cause.'
Raising his fist and grinning, he added: 'We are all with you here at Liverpool, so go on and do your best!'
Beto, speaking in Portuguese, added: 'Beto here from Everton. I want to send you a message to wish you best of luck for the London Marathon.
'What you are doing is fantastic and we hope the training is going well. You have all of the support from everyone at Everton. Take care and best of luck.'
Porto FC fan Sergio was gobsmacked to hear from one of his heroes, grinning as the messages were played out.
He was lost for words for a few seconds as he was asked for his reaction.
Smiling, he said: 'I didn't expect to hear from them. Jota is... because I'm a Porto fan, and he played for Porto, I have his t-shirt. I'm quite happy.'
The Churchtown Primary fundraiser had a target of £250,000 when it was launched. As of today, it has raised £372,240 - and remains open to donations.
Alongside the playground, it will also feature a library and a performance stage with a tribute to both Alice and bebe.
Among the donors are the Prime and Princess of Wales, according to Jinnie Payne, the headteacher at the school. One anonymous donor contributed £10,000.
Alongside David Stancombe, father of Southport attack victim Elsie Dot Stancombe, Sergio ran the London Marathon in April with the support of the nation behind them.
Wearing a t-shirt bearing his daughter's face, he finished the gruelling race in four hours and five minutes, cheered on by friends and family, among them the parents of Bebe King.
Writing on social media in the days after the marathon, he wrote: 'Still taking it all in... The London Marathon was one of the toughest challenges I've faced, but every step was powered by an incredible cause and the overwhelming support from all of you.
'Your cheers, messages, and love carried me through. Thank you from the bottom of our heart - we did this together!'

Newcastle and Man Utd in another striker transfer battle with U21 Euros star Woltemade joining Sesko as target

MANCHESTER UNITED and Newcastle are set to be locked in ANOTHER transfer battle to land Nick Woltemade as their next striker. Bayern Munich had been in pole position to sign Woltemade, 23, - who is valued at £40million. 5 Play Dream Team now! Play The Sun Dream Team ahead of the 2025/26 season But Luis Diaz's £55million switch from Liverpool to Bayern has boosted both the Red Devils and Toon's chances of landing the German Under-21 star as the Bundesliga champions might pull out of the race. United and Newcastle have both made a new No9 a key summer priority. The Premier League giants have both also entered talks for £70m-rated RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko. Ruben Amorim needs to boost United's firepower after their worst campaign in 30 years last season - with Sesko and Ollie Watkins both on their shortlist. Meanwhile, Toon boss Eddie Howie is having to make plans for what life might look like without Alexander Isak, after the Swede indicated he wants to move on. Liverpool remains favourites to sign Isak, who is valued at £150m by the Magpies. And Stuttgart star Woltemade is one of Europe's hottest prospects. The up-and-coming forward has been in Bayern's sights all summer but price has been an issue. 5 Woltemade was one of Sun Sport's five to watch before the Under-21 Euros - and was the tournament's top goalscorer with six. He rose through the academy ranks at Werder Bremen and was a regular for them at various different youth levels. Man United fans answer whether they still back Ruben Amorim Woltemade, who has earned one senior cap, then broke into their first-team as a teenager and scored two goals in 51 games. He was loaned out to SV Elversberg to get some experience under his belt. Bremen cashed in on him 12 months ago when Stuttgart came calling. He has since been prolific and has fired 17 goals in 33 matches. Speaking earlier this month Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth said: 'Nick is back [at Stuttgart training], we're in contact. 'His teammates welcomed him with a smile, and he arrived with a smile. I think he was happy to be back. He's making a very good impression. He's in good shape.' Howe has endured a difficult transfer window so far - having already seen deals for forwards Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike hijacked. 5

Liverpool boss Arne Slot pleased to see 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha having an impact

Ngumoha, who joined from Chelsea a year ago, has been one of the stand-out players in the Reds' two matches in the Far East and produced another impressive cameo off the bench, capped by a brilliant individual strike, in a 3-1 over Yokohama F Marinos in Tokyo. Fellow academy graduate Trey Nyoni, 18 last month, scored Liverpool's second goal after club-record signing Florian Wirtz had opened his account for the club with the equaliser just after the hour mark. Love it, Rio ✨ — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 30, 2025 Liverpool's spending this summer may be approaching £300million, but Slot believes there is always a place for academy players who can contribute. 'Rio again showed the quality he has and that's nice for us because we have a lot of very good players,' Slot said at his post-match press conference. 'But to get some very good players through the academy is always helpful and always gives energy to a team as well. 'It's always nice to see young players from 16, 17 or 18 years old already impacting a game. If you are 16 and you can impact the game like he did, that's definitely worth a compliment.' Slot did, however, sound a word of caution. 'There was also a moment in the game where he should have squared it to Macca (Alexis Mac Allister) or Curtis (Jones) so (there are) also learning parts for him,' he added. Forward Hugo Ekitike made his first start since last week's £79million move from Eintracht Frankfurt and played the first 45 minutes, while another new signing, Giorgi Mamardashvili, started in goal after Alisson Becker returned to Brazil for personal reasons. After conceding 10 minutes into the second half Liverpool turned things around with the help of their youngsters. 'More than a few times there were some very good moments in build-up, but what I also saw in the goal we conceded and in the first half the big chance we conceded was that we had to work harder in those moments to sprint back than we did,' said Slot. 'That is something that also happened to us when we played Milan. It could be (to do) with a tough training camp and it could be (to do) with the heat circumstances – but that's something that we definitely have to improve towards Bilbao (on Monday). 'I thought last season was already tough, but if you look at what all the Premier League teams are doing, the Premier League is even going to get stronger. Hugo's first appearance for the Reds 🤩🔴 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 30, 2025 'We need to be ready for that – that's where my full focus is at the moment. 'We are making steps forward, but I also didn't forget that last season I went to Wembley, having to look at Newcastle lifting a trophy. 'In two weeks we go there again so I hope we show a different face in that final, the Community Shield, than we did in the League Cup final.'

Arne Slot immediately finds Luis Diaz replacement as Liverpool prepare to spend £300m

On the day Luis Diaz departed and left-sided options are being looked at by Liverpool chiefs, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha shone brightly in a 3-1 comeback win against Yokohama F. Marinos Liverpool look set to soar past the £300m mark for summer spending - but it is a teenager brought in a year ago who has caught the eye during pre-season. Reds boss Arne Slot understandably tried to quell some of the growing hype after a stunning solo goal from 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha in Japan. ‌ Yet on the day Luis Diaz departed and left-sided options are being looked at, the signing from Chelsea's academy last summer shone brightly in a 3-1 comeback win against Yokohama F. Marinos. Florian Wirtz, the £116m man from Bayer Leverkusen, also got his first goal in Liverpool colours on what ended up a decent workout on a dodgy pitch in the Far East. ‌ That was the equaliser after Asahi Uenaka's 55th-minute opener for the J1 League side. Teenagers Trey Nyoni and Ngumoha both then scored in an action-packed second half as Liverpool bid farewell to the Far East. ‌ Ngumoha has certainly taken his chance on tour to push for first-team opportunities in the upcoming season. Liverpool have Cody Gakpo as a left-sided option in Diaz's absence while £79m man Hugo Ekitike could be utilised there as well if, as expected, Alexander Isak joins later in this window to take the No 9 role. But Ngumoha is highly-thought of at Liverpool as one of the country's most exciting prospects and Slot will have to keep a tight rein on growing hopes about him. 'He wasn't the only one that impacted the game from the bench because Trey Nyoni, also a youngster, scored [and was] assisted by Jeremie Frimpong,' said the Reds boss. 'In the first goal, I think Curtis Jones played a big part by winning the ball in the midfield. 'Rio again showed the quality he has and that's nice for us because we have a lot of very good players. But to get some very good players through the academy is always helpful and always gives energy to a team as well. 'It's always nice to see young players from 16, 17 or 18 years old already impacting a game. 'There was also a moment in the game where he should have squared it to Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] or Curtis. 'So, [there were] also learning parts for him. If you are 16 and you can impact the game like he did, that's definitely worth a compliment.' ‌ While Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes will continue to work on new signings, Slot will keep preparing the side for the new season with two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. Then they face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield before their Premier League title defence kicks-off at home to Bournemouth on Friday, August 15. Slot added: 'There are no moments to enjoy what we did last season. So, our full focus is now on this season and how we, I need to prepare the players for another tough season. 'Because I thought last season was already tough but if you look at what all the Premier League teams are doing, the Premier League is even going to get stronger than last season.'
