Selangor MMEA detains boat overloaded with almost 80 passengers
Selangor Maritime director Captain (Maritime) Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the passenger boat, overloaded with 78 individuals, was stopped during a routine patrol by the MMEA vessel as part of the Mardof special operation in Selangor waters.
"A check of the boat found two men, a 60-year-old acting as the skipper and an 18-year-old crew member.
"The boat had committed several other offences under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952. These included violating licensing conditions, as both the license and insurance had expired, and making modifications that breached licensing requirements," he said in a statement on Sunday.
Abdul Muhaimin said the boat and the skipper were taken to the Marine police jetty at Pulau Indah before being handed over to the Selangor MMEA investigating officer for further action. – Bernama

(APMM pic) PETALING JAYA : The Terengganu branch of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained seven passenger boats for various offences, including carrying passengers exceeding the permitted limit. This was part of a special operation conducted in the waters of Pulau Redang near Kuala Nerus yesterday. Terengganu MMEA director Hamiludin Che Awang said they inspected 26 passenger boats near the island. 'Among those detained was a boat carrying up to 42 passengers on a single journey. This had jeopardised the safety of everyone on board the boat. 'This is not a minor offence. This is a case of negligence that can cost lives,' Bernama reported him as saying today. He said MMEA would not compromise with boat operators who do not provide life jackets or who carry passengers beyond the capacity permitted. 'The public is also urged to report any high-risk activities. Maritime safety is not the sole responsibility of MMEA. Don't wait for a tragedy to happen before you act,' he said. He said other offences detected were the absence of a passenger manifest, the captain's name not matching details in the operating licence and expired licences. Hamiludin said they took action against 14 crewmen and boat captains, issuing compound fines under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952. He said MMEA would intensify enforcement operations in tourist hotspots ahead of school holidays and festivals to avoid the recurrence of recent tragedies. On June 28, three local tourists, including two children, died when the boat they were on capsized near Pulau Perhentian. All 15 passengers, aged three to 40, were on their way back from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar when big waves suddenly caused the boat to capsize. Besut police chief Azamuddin Ahmad@Abu said the boat skipper tested positive for drugs and also had five previous drug-related records. He said all passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

Drug suspects jump into river to escape during Kuantan raid
KUANTAN: Three men suspected to be high on drugs were daring enough to jump into the river to shake off the authorities on their trail during Ops Guardian in Sungai Belat here today. Deputy director of operations of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Pahang, Maritime Captain Mohd Marmizi Md Nor said the dramatic river chase occurred at around 10am today when his party was carrying out a joint operation with other security and enforcement agencies. He said two men were trying to hide under the jetty while the other one swam away to escape. "Besides inspecting fishing boats in Sungai Kuantan, we also conducted raids on hot spots that were targeted, namely the jetty here. "In the end, we managed to arrest the three male suspects, aged between 40 and 50 years old, trying to escape on suspicion of being involved in drug abuse," he said here today. Meanwhile, he said Ops Guardian, held for the first time in collaboration with seven other agencies, took place over two days and will conclude tomorrow. He said the focus of the operation was on the Sungai Kuantan estuary and Kuantan Port to check for any violations of the law.
