Andover Audio SpinBase MAX 2: Who Says Sequels Are Boring?

Andover Audio's SpinBase MAX 2 premium turntable speaker system
Sequels often get a bad rap. In movies, they are frequently cited as being 'lazy' releases in an attempt to milk the cash cow of the original. However, there are exceptions where the sequel not only equals, but is truly better than the original movie. All of this is a lead up to the SpinBase MAX 2 from Andover Audio. This premium, under-turntable audio system is not just a sequel, but a sequel to a sequel (of sorts). And the SpinBase MAX 2 is one of those sequels that proves improving on the best features of the original can deliver impressive results.
A Little SpinBase History
Andover Audio made turntable owners very happy with the release of the SpinBase, which I reviewed in 2020. This unique audio system housed multiple drivers (two tweeters and two woofers) in an MDF enclosure just slightly larger than a turntable. The dimensions were no accident since the SpinBase was designed to sit beneath the turntable, saving space while still offering 270-degree sound. It also had a built-in PHONO stage, as well as Bluetooth wireless streaming. And to prevent speaker vibration from reaching the turntable perched above and causing feedback, the SpinBase employed Andover Audio's patented IsoGroove technology.
Three years later, I reviewed the SpinBase MAX. This sequel grew an inch taller but featured improvements such as larger woofers (3.5-inches), a power boost to 60W and the ability to also stream to a Bluetooth device, not just from.

A slightly different top panel, but the SpinBase MAX 2 is instantly recognizable
Now we have the SpinBase MAX 2, which I have had connected to a turntable in my test system for the past several months. This latest version looks almost identical to the original SpinBase MAX, but now packs six drivers in that enclosure, gaining an additional pair of 3.5-inch woofers.
You'll see big differences compared to the original when you check the back panels.
It also gets a significant power boost, with 100W now on tap. Low end frequency response has dropped down to 50Hz. The brick is gone with the power supply now built in to the enclosure. But despite the new capabilities, the SpinBase MAX 2 retains the core of what made the original(s) so popular: a minimalist white or black cloth-covered enclosure with a single knob on front, the perfect size to perch a turntable on, IsoGroove to prevent feedback, a PHONO input, a range of inputs and outputs, adjustable bass and treble and 270-degree audio.

Hands On With the SpinBase MAX 2
The SpinBase MAX was already a very good audio system for the price and as you might expect, adding another pair of woofers and more power only improves that situation. In addition, the new optical input makes this system an option for plugging in your TV. Losing the power brick for a built-in power supply is a welcome upgrade that makes this system even more convenient to set up.
In terms of how well that 270-degree audio performs–a key factor in choosing a system like this instead of a pair of speakers–here's an anecdote from my experience with the SpinBase MAX 2.
Typically, I would start with the basics on a new audio system. However, since I was already quite familiar with the product (having tested both the SpinBase and SpinBase MAX), I decided to kick things off with an advanced configuration utilizing a pair of powered bookshelf speakers connected to the system to extend the sound depth and leverage their larger woofers for a little more bass oomph. The results were what I was hoping for: a wide soundstage with convincing stereo separation and plenty of low end. I listened through three full records until I noticed that I had forgotten to power up the bookshelf speakers.
I had been listening to the SpinBase MAX 2 solo the entire time. And that tells you everything you need to know about how well this system performs.
SpinBase MAX 2 is designed to make the most of your turntable without requiring additional space
Vinyl Fan Who is Short of Space And/Or Funds? Here's a Solution
Records continue to be the hottest-selling physical media for music. However, making the most of a record's sound is an investment and also requires physical space. Sure, you can just plug a record player into the AUX of a portable speaker, but the result is going to be disappointing. However, buying the components needed for a stellar setup–an amplifier, a pair of speakers and possibly a PHONO preamp as well–can be a budgetary stretch as well as taking up a lot of space. And that's on top of the turntable, which is neither inexpensive nor compact.
Andover Audio's SpinBase MAX2 is designed to address both of those issues. In terms of space savings, you get a multi-speaker system with 270-degree audio and an assortment of inputs and outputs in a single box that fits beneath the turntable. It takes up almost no additional space on a shelf, and Andover Audio's designers have made sure its minimalist design and white or black cloth cover will complement any decor. While the SpinBase MAX2 costs more than most portable Bluetooth speakers, its price is likely to save you money compared to a full component stereo setup as well.
The Andover Audio SpinBase MAX2 is available now, with an MSRP of $549.

Huge audio sale at Best Buy — 5 deals I'd get from $124

The Best Buy Back to School sale continues this week offering deals on all things college related. This week's sale has a particularly large number of deals on headphones and Bluetooth speakers. For example, right now you can get the JBL Xtreme 4 Portable Speaker for just $249 at Best Buy. That's $130 off and the lowest price I've seen for this Editor's Choice speaker. Below I've rounded up five of the best audio deals you can get right now at Best Buy. For more savings, see our Best Buy coupon codes and our guide to the best back to school laptop sales. Yes, there's a newer model of these headphones, but we called the original OpenRun Pro the ultimate bone conduction headphones for athletes thanks to their competitive sound, barely-there feel, and amazing 10 hours of battery life. They earned a near-perfect score in our Shokz OpenRun Pro review. The Beats Pill is a redesigned version of the company's first (and most popular) Bluetooth speaker, now with improved sound, 24-hour battery life, USB-C charging, access to Apple's Find My network and compatibility with Android and iPhone. Plus, it's IP67-rated for water resistance, so you won't get caught short in the rain. The JBL SoundGear Sense Hybrid are a great set of earbuds for those who want to enjoy their workout music and monitor their environment at the same time. They feature JBL's OpenSound Technology with air conduction, which doesn't completely close off your ear canal. Their flexible hooks can latch onto your ears and be adjusted at different angles to form a secure fit. The Beats Solo 4 might not feature noise canceling, but they make up for it by sounding pretty good. They're comfortable as well thanks to Beats new foam, and they fold up super small so that they can fit into any bag. There's also loads of battery life — 50 hours, to be exact. The Xtreme 4 is the GOAT of portable speakers. In our JBL Xtreme 4 review, we said the Editor's Choice speaker offers excellent bass, party mode, and a terrific design. Its IP67 rating also helps protect it against water or dust. At 4.6 pounds it's not something you'll want to carry all day, but its performance is unrivaled.

A unifying theory of the podcast sound.

Posted Jul 23, 2025 at 7:01 PM UTC A unifying theory of the podcast sound. Our friends over at Switched on Pop just did a fun episode about the history of the way podcasts sound. The Grateful Dead is in there, as is the infamous Breakmaster Cylinder, who wrote the theme for every podcast ever. Including ours! It's fascinating — and a good combo listen with this Vergecast episode from last year. It also might have ruined podcast jingles for me, forever. All podcast themes sound the same — why? What to Do When Your Business Systems Are Locked by Hackers

What would you do if your business suddenly couldn't access any of its systems? The screens go dark, files are encrypted, and a hacker is demanding payment. This nightmare situation happens more often than most think. When hackers lock your systems, panic can make things worse. But acting fast and smart can make all the difference. Every second counts in getting your operations back on track. This blog will walk you through clear steps to take, from emergency actions to future prevention. Keep on reading! Stay Calm and Assess the Situation The very first and most essential step is to maintain your composure. The tendency to panic can result in errors that could potentially cause more harm. To begin, it is necessary to determine which systems are impacted. Check to see if the lockout is not only affecting one department but all of them. Attempt to determine whether the breach is caused by ransomware or some other type of security breach. As a sign, you should look for ransom notes or files with unusual names. All of the things that you see should be documented without any files being altered or deleted. Before moving forward with the process, maintain your concentration on gathering information. Disconnect Affected Systems Immediately If any type of cyberattack has been confirmed, the affected devices should be disconnected from the internet. In order to prevent the attack from spreading further, disconnect them from the network. If there are only a few computers that are infected, then you should isolate those computers. Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can help restrict the hacker's ability to access your device. In the absence of advice from professionals, do not turn off the system. Eliminating access is an effective method for preventing further theft of sensitive data. One of the most important containment strategies lies in preventing movement within your network. Your company may be able to avoid more severe damage if you take prompt action here. Notify Your IT and Security Teams Notify your information technology and cybersecurity team as soon as you have isolated the affected systems. They are prepared to deal with these kinds of situations and are aware of how to proceed securely. You should give them all of your observations as well as the documents. They are going to start analyzing the attack and locating the point of entry that was used. When comparing infected and clean systems, the team might also use backups as a comparison tool. Put your faith in their judgment regarding the next steps, and don't try to get anything fixed on your own. When we work together, we are able to recover more quickly. Always pay close attention to the guidance provided by the team. Contact Authorities and Report the Incident It is essential to notify the appropriate authorities about the cyberattack that has occurred. Please get in touch with the law enforcement or cybercrime units in your area. They may be able to assist in the tracking down of the hackers or even keep others from being attacked. It is easier for government agencies to collect data on attacks and report them. Additionally, it demonstrates that you took legal action during the incident. There might be laws that require you to report this information, but that will depend on where you live. Responsibility is demonstrated when one cooperates with authorities. If insurance claims are involved at a later time, it may also be useful. Do Not Pay the Ransom Without Expert Advice Hackers often demand money to unlock your systems. While paying may seem like the quickest fix, it is risky. There's no guarantee they will give you access back. Paying can also make you a target for future attacks. Always speak with a cybersecurity expert before making any decisions. Some insurance policies cover ransomware cases, so check before taking action. The Ransomware Response should be part of a well-informed plan. Avoid dealing with hackers directly unless advised otherwise. Check Backup Systems and Prepare for Recovery Look into your data backup systems right away. Determine if you have clean copies of important files. Backups stored offline are the safest and can help speed up recovery. Test the backups before restoring them to ensure they aren't infected. If everything checks out, begin the recovery process under IT guidance. This step helps return business operations to normal. Regular backups can be a lifesaver in these situations. Always update your backup policies after an incident to prevent future issues. Investigate How the Attack Happened Once the immediate danger is under control, conduct a full investigation. Your cybersecurity team or a third-party expert should lead this effort. Check logs, emails, and system activity for clues. Determine whether weak passwords, phishing, or outdated software allowed the breach. Knowing the cause helps prevent it from happening again. It also helps in training staff and updating security tools. Document all findings for future reference. Learning from the attack is a key step in improving defenses. Inform Employees and Stakeholders Communication is vital after a security breach. Let your employees know what happened and what steps are being taken. Be clear, honest, and calm in your updates. If customer data was involved, inform clients or partners as required by law. Transparency builds trust and protects your reputation. Provide employees with new security guidelines moving forward. Answer any questions they may have. Make sure everyone knows their role in the recovery process. Being open can reduce fear and confusion. Strengthen Security Measures Moving Forward After recovery, take time to improve your security defenses. Install the latest antivirus and firewall software. Use multi-factor authentication to add another layer of protection. Educate staff regularly on cybersecurity best practices. Limit access to sensitive data to only those who need it. Conduct regular security audits and penetration tests. Always patch your software and systems to close any gaps. Set up alerts for unusual activity on your network. Staying proactive is key to keeping hackers away. Steps To Take When Hackers Lock Your Business Systems As hard as it may be, hackers can unlock your business systems. Acting quickly, making smart decisions, and working well with others make a big difference. From finding threats to making security better in the future, every step is necessary. There is a need for communication, legal steps, and technical support. Both stopping the attack and learning from it are very important. Readyness is the first step to a good defense. Your business can come back even stronger if you have the right plan. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
