Cathie Wood Is Doubling Down on This AI Stock. Should You?
Cathie Wood has had mixed results as an institutional investor. Her firm, Ark Invest, sells exchange-traded funds (ETF), and her focus is on tech disruptors. Some of her ETFs have outperformed the market over long periods, and others have delivered underwhelming performance, but she is confident in the future potential of her stocks.
Whether or not you agree with her stock picks or would invest in her company's products, investors can learn about up-and-coming tech stocks and see what she thinks about tech giants by following Ark Invest's trades. One stock she has been buying left and right recently is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM).
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
Let's see why she's finding it interesting right now and whether or not it's a buy for you today.
The king of AI stocks
Taiwan Semiconductor is a foundry, and it produces the physical chips for most of the artificial intelligence (AI) chipmakers that are generating the AI revolution. So when people talk about the chips or graphics processing units (GPU) that Nvidia makes, Nvidia designs them, but its partner -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC -- actually produces them. That makes it an integral part of the growth of AI, and it also provides it with protection against a negative impact for any specific client.
The partnership also gives TSMC excellent long-term potential because regardless of whether it's AI or something else, chips are the underlying basis of almost all new technology. Some of TSMC's other high-profile clients include Apple and Advanced Micro Devices, and it produces chips for far more applications than AI, powering technology like smartphones, Internet of Things, and consumer products.
Because TSMC works with these clients, it's growing on their coattails. High-performance computing, which includes AI, increased from 46% of its revenue in the 2024 first quarter to 59% in the 2025 first quarter.
TSMC's own growth isn't quite as fantastic as Nvidia's, but it's high and steady. Revenue increased 35% year over year in Q1 2025, and management expects revenue to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) near 20% through 2029.
It's also incredibly profitable. Gross margin widened 5.7 percentage points in the first quarter to 58.5%, and operating margin was 48.5%. Earnings per share (EPS) increased 60%. The longer-term outlook is a gross margin of at least 53%.
TSMC stock had fallen earlier this year when the market was concerned about tariffs, but it's already climbing back up. It has an excellent long-term prognosis, and it also has an operational facility in Arizona that protects it somewhat from higher tariffs. North America accounts for 77% of its business, and management recently announced that it's going to expand its investments in the U.S. by $165 billion "to power the future of AI."
Priced to buy
Even though Cathie Wood is known for buying high-growth stocks -- and those are typically priced at premium levels -- if you follow her trading activity, you'll notice she uses value-investing tenets, too. After all, the bottom line for most successful investing is to buy low and sell high. She tends to scoop up stocks she believes in strongly when they fall and sell them when they're too expensive.
One example of a stock she's been selling recently is Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), which is up 476% over the past year and trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 597. TSMC, on the other hand, is up only 20% over the past year, but it trades at only 27 times trailing-12-month earnings, a slight discount to its one-year average.
Considering its excellent fundamentals, huge potential in tech, and safety, TSMC is the kind of stock that can appeal to a broad section of the investing community, and I highly recommend buying it.

With a $3.8 Trillion Market Cap, Does Nvidia Really Still Have Room to Grow?
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is the largest publicly traded company, with a market cap of about $3.8 trillion on Friday afternoon, and a stock price that's just below its all-time high. Nvidia's growth story has been nothing short of extraordinary. Revenue has grown by nearly 400% over the past two years as AI investment activity has exploded, and that's after an already extremely impressive multidecade history. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » If you don't already own Nvidia, is it too late to invest? With an estimated 95% share of its most important end markets and nearly $150 billion in revenue over the past four quarters, it's easy to understand why Nvidia's upside from here might appear limited. But I'd argue the opposite. Not only do I think Nvidia's revenue could get much larger from here, but the stock could produce market-beating returns for many years to come. Nvidia has more growth potential than you might think Nvidia has four main business segments: data center, gaming, professional visualization, and automotive. The data center segment is by far the most important. In simple terms, AI-focused applications require a tremendous amount of data processing ability, and Nvidia's data center accelerator products are widely considered to be the gold standard. As mentioned, the company has a dominant (estimated) 95% market share. And the industry itself is growing rapidly. Over the past year, Nvidia's data center segment sales tripled, and the $120 billion global market for data center accelerators is expected to roughly double over the next five years. Data center capital spending -- mostly by large tech companies -- is expected to reach $1 trillion annually in just three years, compared to $500 billion today. In other words, if Nvidia simply maintains its dominant market share, the largest and most critical part of its business could double or more in size by 2030. The company's other segments have lots of room to grow as well. The automotive segment is a big opportunity, as advanced autonomous vehicle technology is still in the early stages of evolution, and Nvidia already has 20 of the top 30 EV manufacturers on its customer roster. In fact, GPUs for automotive applications is expected to be a $45 billion market by 2030, and Nvidia also develops software systems, safety systems, and more for automotive applications. Capital allocation and a reasonable valuation Nvidia's free cash flow hasn't been anywhere near the current level for long, but now that the company is generating boatloads of cash, management is allocating it in shareholder-friendly ways. The company does pay a quarterly dividend, but it's a minuscule one (0.03% yield), at least for now. But buybacks are becoming an increasingly large focus of management. In the first quarter, Nvidia spent more than $14 billion on stock buybacks, which was more than half of the company's free cash flow. However, keep in mind that Nvidia's free cash flow grew by 75% year over year, and is expected to grow rapidly for at least the next few years, so it wouldn't be surprising to see buybacks expand along with it. Finally, Nvidia is not a cheap stock, trading at 48 times trailing 12-month earnings and about 34 times sales. But it isn't necessarily an expensive one. Nvidia's revenue growth (both past and projected) clearly justifies a higher P/E ratio. Analyst estimates call for 44% year-over-year earnings growth in the current fiscal year (ending January 2026) and another 34% in the following year. Plus, the combination of this growth rate and Nvidia's stellar margins (net margin over 50%) warrant an elevated price-to-sales multiple. In fact, by some popular metrics, such as the price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio, Nvidia stock looks rather attractive right now. The bottom line is that a combination of a growing market opportunity, shareholder-friendly capital allocation, and a reasonable valuation could allow Nvidia to continue to grow and produce excellent returns for years to come. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Japan launches a climate change monitoring satellite on mainstay H2A rocket's last flight
TOKYO — Japan on Sunday launched a satellite to monitor greenhouse gas emissions using its mainstay H-2A rocket, which made its final flight before it is replaced by a new flagship designed to be more cost competitive in the global space market. The H-2A rocket successfully lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan, carrying the GOSAT-GW satellite as part of Tokyo's effort to mitigate climate change. The satellite was released into orbit about 16 minutes later. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which operates the rocket launch, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, will hold a news conference later Sunday to give further details of the flight. Sunday's launch marked the 50th and final flight for the H-2A, which has served as Japan's mainstay rocket to carry satellites and probes into space with a near-perfect record since its 2001 debut. After its retirement, it will be fully replaced by the H3, which is already in operation, as Japan's new main flagship. The launch follows several days of delays because of malfunctioning of the rocket's electrical systems. The GOSAT-GW, or Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle, is a third series in the mission to monitor carbon, methane and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. It will start distributing data in about one year, officials said. The liquid-fuel H-2A rocket with two solid-fuel sub-rockets developed by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has so far had 49 flights with a 98% success record, with only one failure in 2003. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has provided its launch operation since 2007. H-2A successfully carried into space Japan's moon lander SLIM last year, and a popular Hayabusa2 spacecraft in 2014 to reach a distant asteroid, contributing to the country's space programs. Japan sees a stable, commercially competitive space transport capability as key to its space program and national security, and has been developing two new flagship rockets as successors of the H-2A series — the larger H3 with Mitsubishi, and a much smaller Epsilon system with the aerospace unit of the heavy machinery maker IHI. It hopes to cater to diverse customer needs and improve its position in the growing satellite launch market. The H3, is designed to carry larger payloads than the H-2A at about half its launch cost to be globally competitive, though officials say more cost reduction efforts are needed to achieve better price competitiveness in the global market. The H3 has made four consecutive successful flights after a failed debut attempt in 2023, when the rocket had to be destroyed with its payload. Mari Yamaguchi, The Associated Press
