A 26-YEAR-OLD IRISH man faces jail time in Australia after he allegedly entered the country with a false passport, and, when detained, allegedly made his escape.
The man is scheduled to appear before Brisbane Arrest Court later today, charged with two migration offences.
The man allegedly entered Australia using a false passport in March of this year. He was detained by officials after he refused to undertake biometric checks. Once detained, the man allegedly tied bedsheets together and scaled down the side of the building to escape.

An arrest warrant was issued in April 2025. He was arrested by Australian Federal Police on Thursday.
He appeared before Parramatta Magistrates Court yesterday. A successful application was made to extradite the man back to Queensland that afternoon, where he will face charges.
The man is accused of one count of using false documents and false or misleading information, and one count of escaping from detention, both offences contrary to the Migration Act 1958.
The maximum penalty for the false documents offence is 10 years' imprisonment.

Irish person believed among nine kidnapped from Haitian orphanage

An Irish person is reported to be among nine people who were kidnapped from an orphanage near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance. The victims were taken yesterday from the Sainte-Helene orphanage in the commune of Kenscoff, about 10km southeast of the capital. The facility is operated by the humanitarian organisation "Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs" ("Our Little Brothers and Sisters"). A three-year-old child and eight employees were taken, according to Kenscoff Mayor Masillon Jean. In April 2021, two French priests were among ten people kidnapped in Croix des Bouquets before they were released nearly three weeks later. The same group behind that kidnapping, the "400 Mawazo" gang, took a group of 17 American and Canadian missionaries hostage six months later. Since the start of this year, Kenscoff has found itself in the crosshairs of the "Viv Ansanm" ("Living Together") gang, which has already taken control of several other localities. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said at least 3,141 people have been killed in Haiti in the first half of this year, where the growing impact of gang violence threatens to further destabilise the nation.
