On Cam: Gunman Kills Ukraine Intel Agent in Kyiv; Officials Probe ‘Targeted Assassination'

According to a spokesperson for the SBU, who spoke to CNN, the officer was fatally shot outside an apartment building in Kyiv.
A high-ranking officer from Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) was shot dead in Kyiv on Thursday morning in what Ukrainian authorities described to CNN as an apparent targeted assassination. The killing, which took place in broad daylight in the capital city, has prompted an urgent investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to a spokesperson for the SBU, who spoke to CNN, the officer was fatally shot outside an apartment building in Kyiv. The security agency confirmed that an investigation was underway but withheld the officer's identity pending further inquiries. CNN reported that Ukrainian police and intelligence units are now working jointly to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
Surveillance footage from a nearby CCTV camera—widely circulated on local Telegram channels and reviewed by CNN—appears to show the chilling moment of the attack. Although CNN has not independently verified the video, the surroundings in the clip match official photographs released by Kyiv Police. In the silent footage, a man exits a residential building carrying bags and walks toward a parked vehicle. Suddenly, a masked gunman approaches and appears to shoot him at close range. After the victim collapses, the attacker fires again before fleeing on foot. A passerby is seen running from the scene in panic.
The SBU plays a central role in Ukraine's national security apparatus and has led several high-profile operations against Russian interests. CNN previously reported that SBU agents were responsible for 'Operation Spiderweb," a daring drone strike campaign that targeted Russian military airfields deep inside enemy territory. The operation resulted in the destruction and damage of multiple strategic aircraft, including bombers and surveillance planes—delivering a significant blow to Moscow's aerial capabilities.
CNN has also reported that the SBU was allegedly behind the assassination of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, a top Russian military official accused of deploying chemical weapons. The killing of the SBU officer this week raises fresh concerns about the escalating covert warfare between Ukrainian and Russian intelligence operatives.
Authorities in Kyiv have yet to publicly link Thursday's assassination to Russia or its intelligence agencies, but the incident marks another deadly episode in Ukraine's ongoing shadow war.

Notorious Ecuadoran Drug Trafficker Adolfo Macias Pleads Not Guilty In US Court

Last Updated: The leader of the Los Choneros gang delivered his 'not guilty' plea in a federal court in Brooklyn through his lawyer and with the help of an interpreter, AFP reported. Notorious Ecuadoran drug trafficker Adolfo Macias has pleaded not guilty to narcotics charges in a court in the United States on Monday, nearly a month after he was arrested again after he escaped from a maximum security penitentiary in 2024. The leader of the Los Choneros gang delivered his 'not guilty" plea in a federal court in Brooklyn through his lawyer and with the help of an interpreter, AFP reported. The man denied seven charges, which included drug trafficking and arms trafficking – which is punishable by 20 years to life imprisonment. 'As alleged, the defendant served for years as the principal leader of Los Choneros, a notoriously violent transnational criminal organization, and was a ruthless and infamous drug and firearms trafficker," US attorney Joseph Nocella said in a statement ahead of hearing on Monday. 'The defendant and his co-conspirators flooded the United States and other countries with drugs and used extreme measures of violence in their quest for power and control." In April, the US Attorney's Office filed charges against Macias for allegedly being involved in cocaine trafficking, conspiracy, and gun-related crimes, including smuggling weapons. The flight carrying Macias from Ecuador arrived in New York state late Sunday. Last week, Macias—who was once a taxi driver but later became a crime leader—agreed in a court in Quito to be sent to the US to face these charges. Macias is the first person from Ecuador to be extradited under a new law passed last year. The law was approved after a public vote, where President Daniel Noboa asked citizens to support tougher action against criminal gangs. Ecuador, once a peaceful country located between Colombia and Peru—the world's top cocaine producers—has seen a rise in violence as rival gangs linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels fight for power. In January 2024, after Macias escaped from prison, President Noboa declared a state of 'internal armed conflict". He sent the military and tanks into the streets to take down the gangs. Macias's escape led to a wave of violence and a large operation by police and the military to catch him. The government even offered a $1 million reward for information that would lead to his capture. On June 25, Macias was found hiding in a bunker under floor tiles in a luxury house in Manta, a port city known as the base of his gang, Los Choneros. President Noboa said Macias should be extradited 'the sooner the better." Who Will Blink First? Congress-Tharoor Discomfort Apparent On Day 1 Of Monsoon Session

Last Updated: During Shashi Tharoor's first meeting with party colleagues, there was a keen sense of discomfort as many of them were unhappy about his controversial comments on Operation Sindoor For Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the first day of the monsoon session in Parliament on Monday may have felt like his first day in school. Tharoor's day began at 10.15 am with a meeting of Congress MPs to discuss party strategy during the session, which will end next month. During this meeting, however, there was a keen sense of discomfort as many of his colleagues were unhappy about his controversial comments after Operation Sindoor. This meeting, too, came a day after his viral remarks on prioritising nation over party, leading Congress leader V Muraleedharan to suggest excluding Tharoor from all party events in Kerala. According to party sources, there is no such decision yet but Tharoor knew he had once again stirred the top leadership. During the meeting, some leaders spoke to him but he remained mostly silent, they said. Outside, however, Tharoor was seen interacting with BJP leaders like Suresh Gopi, also from Kerala, and the two exchanged numbers. He met Tejaswi Surya, with whom he had been part of a delegation to the US, and Praful Patel. At one point, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi approached Tharoor and joked: 'Now that you said nation first, the Congress thinks you are joining the BJP", to which Tharoor merely smiled. The Congress seems uncertain on how to handle Tharoor. In Kerala, there is evident animosity towards him, leading to open and direct attacks. The state Congress believes his words will only benefit the CPI(M) and the BJP, which is gradually gaining ground. But the Congress central leadership is hesitant to address him. They feel that taking action against Tharoor on issues like national security would be politically damaging. In parliament corridors, there was a brief encounter between KC Venugopal and Tharoor. Venugopal is powerful and close to the Gandhis but is said to belong to a different camp than Tharoor, with whom he rarely sees eye to eye. When urged by the media, he approached Tharoor to state he had no issues with him. But attempts to take pictures together were unsuccessful. Both sides are observing and gauging each other, waiting to see who will blink first. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 23:38 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
