Lebanese writer-director Mira Shaib's debut feature tells the story of Arze (Diamand Abou Abboud), a single mother living in Beirut searching for the money to buy a scooter for her son's 18th birthday.
Her efforts lead to an adventure that uncovers the secrets that have held her family together. Her family's history, in turn, is tied to the history of Lebanon, a country marked by conflict and the often tense co-existence of diverse Muslim, Christian and Druze communities.
The film was Lebanon's official entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
A review in entertainment news publication Variety says 'Shaib's directorial debut has the growing pains of a first feature', bu t ' as it gradually explores its political backdrop, its drama transforms in intriguing, even exciting ways'.

Some years ago, journalist Shiori Ito was sexually assaulted by a bureau chief at a Japanese broadcasting network. He had connections with highly-placed government officials.
Through the use of security footage, news clips and Ito' s r ecordings, the documentary follows her journey to find justice in a nation where the police are known to discourage women from reporting rape and to treat cases of sexual violence lightly, or drop sexual assault cases without giving reasons, forcing victims to seek redress in civil court.
Through her work, Ito became a key figure in Japan's #MeToo movement, which made her a target of online trolls. Despite this, she persisted and in 2017 published a memoir, on which this documentary is based.
The film has received numerous prizes, including a Peabody Award, given for outstanding work in broadcast and online media, and a nomination for Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards.
There will be a virtual question-and-answer session with director Ito after the July 27 screening.

Singapore Film Society Special Presentation: Hong Kong Horror Classics
Centipede Horror will be screened on Aug 2 and Sept 5.

When the craze for martial arts movies tapered off in the 1980s, Hong Kong's film factories pivoted to the other staple of exploitation cinema: horror. The Singapore Film Society presents two classics of the genre, restored in 4K, uncut and in their original Cantonese, screened here for the first time.
Centipede Horror (1982, M18, 93 minutes, screens on Aug 2 and Sept 5, 7pm) capitalises on the fascination Hong Kongers used to have for South-east Asian black magic. It features actor Hussein Abu Hassan playing a bomoh (Malay shaman) with the ability to summon the centipedes of the title for deadly purposes. When Wai Lun (Michael Miu) investigates his sister's death, he uncovers a generational curse that involves creepy-crawlies.
The Sept 5 screening will include a post-screening talk about the film's representation of South-east Asian black magic, led by Assistant Professor Yeo Min Hui, a scholar in East and South-east Asian film and cultural studies at Nanyang Technological University.
Red Spell Spells Red (1983, R21, 93 minutes, screens on Aug 1 and Sept 6, 7pm) also rides on the craze for South-east Asian black magic. A film crew shooting a documentary about the paranormal in Borneo unleashes a ghost. The result is an R21-rated spectacle of gore and nudity, which the Monster Zone horror appreciation website calls 'a brazen, gonzo, shameless piece of exploitation film-making'.

Heads up, Digimon tamers - the official trailer has just dropped for a new anime series slated to begin in October 2025. First unveiled in March, Digimon Beatbreak - the 10th series in the popular media franchise - will follow the adventures of protagonist Tomoro Tenma and his lizard-like companion, Gekkomon. Digimon (short for Digital Monsters) are the physical incarnations of digital data or computer programs that reside in the Digital World - a parallel dimension spawned from data in mankind's communication networks. In the world of Digimon Beatbreak, which 'achieved development through emotionally generated energy', Digimon lurk in the shadows and are said to devour emotions, with a team of 'cleaners' handling incidents arising from altercations with these creatures. The tagline of the series is 'Glitch the Future' - nobody knows what it means at this point, but eh, it sounds cool. Tenma is voiced by Miyu Irino, a veteran voice actor known for his role as Haku in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, Sora in the Kingdom Hearts video game series, Saji Crossroad in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, as well as Sabo in One Piece. The franchise first began as a series of digital pets similar to Tamagotchi . It then blossomed into a franchise comprising multiple anime series, games, manga, trading cards, and of course, toys. Entertainment website Comic Book Resources estimates the Digimon franchise to have racked up US$6.3 billion (S$8.18 billion) in revenue since then. There are nearly 1,300 unique Digimon in the franchise (compared with Pokemon at little over a thousand) of all shapes and sizes, including cute dogs that evolve into cats, armoured humanoid dragons, angels and demons, and literal manifestations of the end of all creation. They are mostly capable of human speech, and often possess elaborate, edgy designs complete with flashy armour and weapons.

The Projector Leaves Cineleisure, Returns to Golden Mile Tower

Indie cinema The Projector has confirmed that it will be leaving Cineleisure and will hold its final screenings there on August 3. In a press statement sent on Aug 1, a spokesman for the cinema says that it will resume screenings at its original space at Golden Mile Tower from Aug 6. The decision to return to its home base came after negotiations for the en bloc sale of Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road concluded without a sale, says the spokesman. Ms Karen Tan, co-founder of The Projector, says that with the en bloc no longer moving forward, 'we have the chance to return home'. 'This isn't just a move, it's a return to our roots,' she says. The cinema began life at Golden Mile Tower in 2014 and has since become a mainstay in Singapore's cultural scene through its focus on screening independent films as well as hosting an eclectic mix of events. The Golden Village X The Projector collaboration at Cineleisure on Grange Road began operations in December 2023 in the space vacated by Cathay Cineplex, which left in June 2023. Golden Village operated three halls while The Projector operated the remaining three. In a joint press release announcing the project previously, the operators said the space would 'offer the best of both worlds'. 'It will have blockbusters and mainstream hits that moviegoers have come to expect from Golden Village and the rich selection of international film festivals, live events and alternative films that fans of The Projector have come to love,' said the statement. As recently as April 2025, The Projector announced that its Golden Mile Tower site will no longer be used for screenings and instead focus on events such as interactive film experiences, live music showcases and corporate venue hires. Its Cineleisure site would take over the job of daily screenings. The Projector's statement on Aug 1 says that audiences can continue to look forward to 'a programming slate planned by and for cinephiles'. In August, the cinema will present the Majulah Cinema! showcase of Singapore directors for SG60, a Paul Thomas Anderson retrospective and a 50th anniversary re-release of Jaws, among others. A separate statement by Singapore's largest cinema operator, Golden Village, says it will fully manage operations at Cineleisure from August 4, 2025. GV Cineleisure will also be available for venue hire, for corporate bookings and private functions. To celebrate the reopening and the upcoming National Day weekend, GV Cineleisure will roll out a series of promotions from August 7 to 20, including $6 movie tickets and free drinks.
