Salman Khan's Sikandar Failed As Tamil Director Didn't Understand Hindi Script: 'Was Not Exactly Sure'
The filmmaker said he wasn't exactly sure what the script said as it was in Hindi. Salman Khan's Sikandar was a dud at the box office. The film had several strengths: Salman Khan's box office pull, Rashmika Mandanna's fanbase and AR Murugadoss's proven Bollywood track record. Despite this, Sikandar had an underwhelming run at the box office. Now, the filmmaker has blamed it on his inability to understand Hindi, and thus, not fully knowing 'what is happening' in the film. AR Murugadoss recently said, 'When we make films in our mother tongue, it gives us strength. We know what is happening here. Today, there's a trend going and suddenly the audience gets connected with that trend. When we shift language, we don't know what the youngsters are enjoying in that language. All we need is a script to believe it." He further explained, 'For once, I can take up Telugu films, but Hindi may not work for us because after we write the script, they translate it into English. Then it is again translated into Hindi." He added, 'We can only guess what they are saying, but we are not exactly sure about what is happening. When you make a film in an unknown language and place, it feels like you are handicapped. It is like you don't have hands. I strongly believe our strength depends on where and which culture we come from." This has come as a shock to the filmmaker's fans, as his previous Hindi films both had good box office runs. The filmmaker is behind Akshay Kumar's Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and Aamir Khan's Ghajini. Both films opened to largely positive reviews, with Ghajini even becoming a blockbuster hit. As for Sikandar, critics responded harshly—common criticisms included weak screenplay, uninspired direction, and flat performances. Despite high anticipation, the film failed to deliver the energy and charisma seen in Salman Khan's earlier hits. In the film, Salman plays Sanjay 'Sikandar" Rajkot, a man driven to protect three organ recipients after the death of his wife (played by Rashmika Mandanna). Rashmika plays Saisri, whose tragic storyline catalyses his transformation into a defender of the oppressed against a corrupt politician. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ab Tak Chhappan: How The Story Of 'Encounter Specialist' Daya Nayak Became A Pop Cult
Real has often inspired reel and Ab Tak Chhappan drawing inspiration from Daya Nayak, the 'Encounter Specialist' of the Mumbai Police, is just another example. The 2004 film starred Nana Patekar as the protagonist Sadhu Agashe, modelled on Daya Nayak. Let's revisit the film in the light of senior police inspector Daya Nayak's promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. According to reports, he received the promotion two days before his retirement on July 31, 2025, 30 years after he joined the police force as a sub-inspector. Ab Tak Chhappan gets its title from the 56 encounters performed by Nana Patekar's Sadhu Agashe till date. The film was directed by Shimit Amin (three years before Chak De! India) and produced by Ram Gopal Varma. whose penchant for true-crime stories is world renowned. Ab Tak Chhappan follows Sadhu Agashe, who has risen through ranks as a fearless and goal-oriented cop who is making headlines for almost single handedly taking out the Mumbai underworld gangs. Despite being in a high-pressure and violent job, Sadhu Agashe is a family man. His life does a double take when the new commissioner MP Suchak -- who has a strong link with don Rajashekhar -- takes charge. In a key scene of the film, the encounter specialist tells his junior that the job of a Circle Inspector is to "shoot criminals, not control them". The philosophy was simple, effective but not very human rights and media friendly. Some colleagues are jealous of his growing fame (read: notoriety), some call him out on his face for being irresponsible with his license to kill, while others support his way of working, however questionable it may be. But Sadhu Agashe is clear in his mind as to what his duty entails, like a horse with blinkers, "Defence is our responsibility, not the department's." He further argues, "We, cops, are not allowed to think. All we have is the finger to pull the trigger". Killing becomes like a second nature to Sadhu Agashe so much that after he kills a goon at point blank range, smiling all the way, he casually sips on a glass of orange juice as if what happened a while ago was normal. And in the world of Sadhu Agashe maybe that is quite normal. A realistic, gritty narrative, theme of moral ambiguity and duty, and no songs were some of the factors in the success of the film. It is widely believed that Daya Nayak even served as a consultant on Ab Tak Chhappan makers for authenticity, advising them on details like appearance and conduct of police officers. Not only Ab Tak Chhappan, Daya Nayak's career also inspired Department (2012). Ab Tak Chhappan later got a Telugu remake in Siddham (2009), fronted by Jagapati Babu. Another Telugu film, Golimaar (2010) is also said to be inspired by Daya Nayak's life. A sequel, Ab Tak Chhappan 2 was also released in 2015, but it didn't receive acclaim and moderate success like the original.

Vijay Deverakonda's ‘Kingdom' set for grand release amidst massive buzz
The stage is set for the grand worldwide release of Kingdom, the much-anticipated Telugu film starring Vijay Deverakonda. Directed by Jersey fame Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film also features Bhagyashree Borse and Satyadev in prominent roles. Backed by Suryadevara Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, with Srikara Studios presenting, Kingdom will hit theatres on July 31st. Music for the film is composed by Rockstar Anirudh Ravichander. With promotional content striking a chord, particularly the trailer, expectations have skyrocketed. At a press meet held ahead of the release, Vijay Deverakonda expressed confidence, stating, 'The audience response to pre-bookings has been phenomenal. Kingdom is not just action — it's a deeply emotional story. Within minutes, viewers will be drawn into our world. Every war is fought for love, land, or family — and so is this.' Producer Suryadevara Naga Vamsi echoed the sentiment: 'Opening strong at the box office has become a challenge, but Kingdom has already cleared its first test with promising advance bookings. It's a gangster drama packed with emotional weight — not your typical actioner.' He also highlighted the film's authenticity, adding, 'We avoided studio sets and shot mostly in real locations, and that realism will shine through on screen.' Actress Bhagyashree Borse, who plays Madhu, shared, 'It was an honour to work on such a well-written character. I hope audiences love the film as much as we loved making it.'
