Liberty ‘likely' to suspend Betnijah Laney-Hamilton's contract after suffering brutal knee injury
Laney-Hamilton, a member of the Liberty's championship starting lineup, had surgery in March on her left knee after suffering an acute meniscus tear at Unrivaled earlier this year.
Laney-Hamilton has started the rehabilitation process but isn't expected to return to basketball activities until August or September, meaning she could miss most — if not all — of the WNBA season.

Kolb said his 'heart breaks' for Laney-Hamilton, who's not only been a vocal leader but also has been a pivotal part in the team's recent success of back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances, including a 2024 championship.
The decision to ultimately suspend Laney-Hamilton's contract – which hasn't officially happened yet – is not one Kolb takes lightly.
'In terms of the season, I think it's fair to assume we will be suspending that contract,' Kolb said. 'We want to get to camp and to really understand what we have and make sure things are playing out the way we envisioned. We're navigating a lot this year. In addition to the things that we spoke on earlier with expansion and things like that, we've got EuroBasket. And we need to be really mindful and practical about not putting too much wear and tear on our existing players. That's really important and we need to be fully formed come September. That's where we need to be and we need to be hitting our stride.'
Kolb made it clear that suspending Laney-Hamilton's contract is 'procedural' and should not be viewed in a negative light.

By doing so, though, the Liberty will open a roster spot and remove her $185,400 salary from the team's books, giving the team flexibility to add another player for this season.
The Liberty will also have exclusive negotiating rights with Laney-Hamilton for what's expected to be a chaotic free agency cycle in 2026, Kolb said.
An Unrivaled source previously told The Post that the new 3-on-3 basketball league would cover Laney-Hamilton's 2025 WNBA salary in the case the Liberty suspend her.

Removing Laney-Hamilton from the Liberty's 2025 picture could also be the best thing for the 31-year-old who has a lengthy history with knee injuries.
Laney-Hamilton has now undergone at least four knee surgeries since November 2021.
She injured her right knee early during the 2022 season and was limited to only nine games.
When she returned in August of that season, she played well but didn't have established on-court chemistry with her teammates.
Last season, she had another minor procedure and missed 12 games but returned for the playoffs, where she averaged 27.3 minutes per game.
Sitting out this season would put Laney-Hamilton in the best position for future success.
'We were fully confident that she's going to make a full return,' Kolb said. 'And she's going to have a great opportunity to be the healthiest that she's been in some years.'
The Liberty are anticipating three players to temporarily leave the team in June to play in this year's EuroBasket.
Nyara Sabally and Leonie Fiebich are expected to play for Germany, while Marine Johannes is set to suit up for France in the international tournament which will run from June 18-29.

WNBA Makes Historic Angel Reese Announcement on Tuesday
WNBA Makes Historic Angel Reese Announcement on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky suffered their third straight loss on Tuesday night. This team had high hopes heading into the second half of the season, but they ended up getting blown out yet again by the Minnesota Lynx, 91-68. Angel Reese did what she could for the Sky in this one, though, registering 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, 11 rebounds, three assists, and a block in 30 minutes of action. The downside for the 23-year-old, however, is her nine turnovers in the game, which represented a significant portion of Chicago's 21 turnovers on the evening. Despite her effort, Reese's performance still wasn't enough to help the Sky avoid another deflating defeat. Be that as it may, Reese was still able to make WNBA history in the blowout loss. The league took to social media to announce the Sky star's latest historic milestone. "🚨 Angel Reese Makes HISTORY… Again! Angel Reese drops her 10th straight double-double, becoming the only player in WNBA history with multiple streaks of 10+ double-doubles. "She currently has 11 PTS and 10 REB vs. the Lynx 🔥" the league posted on X. Entering Tuesday's game, Reese averaged 14.0 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 21 appearances this season. She is currently leading the league in rebounds by a significant margin, with A'ja Wilson averaging 9.2 boards per game at the No. 2 spot. It's a quick turnaround for the Sky, as they return to action on Thursday in a home game against the Seattle Storm. This should be considered a good thing for Reese and Co. as they immediately get an opportunity to make amends for Tuesday's blowout story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 23, 2025, where it first appeared.

Slow-Mo Video of Rickea Jackson's Game-Winner in Sparks-Liberty Is a Must-See
Slow-Mo Video of Rickea Jackson's Game-Winner in Sparks-Liberty Is a Must-See originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rickea Jackson stepped up big time on Friday to help the Los Angeles Sparks prevent a monumental collapse and complete the upset against the reigning WNBA champions, New York Liberty. The Sparks led by as many as 15 points after ending the first quarter up 35-20. However, with 23 seconds left on the clock, the Liberty tied things up at 99-all after Sabrina Ionescu hit a tough mid-range jumper. Jackson, who scored 17 points in the first quarter to get the Sparks rolling, wouldn't let her efforts go in vain. As time was running out, she asked for the ball from near the basket and powered her way to the rim. Liberty forward Stephanie Talbot tried her best to make the shot hard for Jackson without fouling her. However, the Sparks rising star made the difficult layup to give the Sparks the 101-99 victory at the buzzer. The WNBA, for its part, shared a slow-motion video of the play, further hyping up L.A. fans and several viewers. "That was a great game! I see you Sparks," a commenter wrote. Another one said, "She has best player in the league potential." "Tough finish," a fan added. "Helluva finish to a crazy game," an X user remarked. A hyped supporter stated, "Been BALLIN!!" "She ready!!!" a sixth follower exclaimed. Rickea Jackson finished with 24 points in the contest, with her game-winner being her only basket in the fourth quarter. Obviously, though, it's the most important one. The Sparks improved to 11-14 on the season with the win against the Liberty, putting them at No. 10 in the standings. They remain in contention for the playoffs, as they are just one game behind the Las Vegas Aces for the No. 8 story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared.

Rickea Jackson: 2024 WNBA Draft Class With Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese Can Be Best Ever
Rickea Jackson: 2024 WNBA Draft Class With Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese Can Be Best Ever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Sparks rising star Rickea Jackson, who was drafted to the WNBA in 2024 along with the likes of Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Cameron Brink and Kamilla Cardoso, knows very well what her class is capable of. Clark is already the biggest needle-mover the game has ever seen, with the WNBA seeing record-breaking numbers in viewership, stadium attendance, and merchandise sales because of the Indiana Fever star. The former Iowa Hawkeyes guard has also backed up her popularity with her game, getting selected as an All-Star in her first two years. Reese, for her part, continues to make history as well. More recently, she became the only WNBA player to record multiple streaks of 10 or more double-doubles. Like Clark, she has also been selected for the All-Star Game twice. On the other hand, Jackson, Brink and Cardoso are also on the path to superstardom. Other players drafted in 2024, such as Aaliyah Edwards, Kate Martin, Jacy Sheldon and Nika Muhl, also continue to prove they can be key contributors for their respective teams. With that being said, Jackson has seen enough from their short time so far in the WNBA to confidently say that their class can be the best the league has ever seen. Rickea Jackson's Confident Take on 2024 WNBA Draft Class Featuring Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese In an exclusive interview with Athlon Sports, where she discussed her partnership with snack brand Cheez-It, Jackson also shared her thoughts about the 2024 WNBA Draft class. The 24-year-old forward acknowledged that there are plenty of expectations on their draft class, especially after the incredible first season that she and her peers put up in 2024. That being said, she got honest and pointed out that they are still growing and learning as players. "I feel like as fans, we know that you want us to do great. You want us to be efficient every night, but that's not realistic as the defense has figured us out a little bit more or we're in our second years and we're still trying to figure it out. We're at the top of scouts," Jackson explained. " I feel like you can't just expect us to be these 10-year vets right now. But again, I feel like we've been handling it with grace. I feel like we've been still going out there every night playing our butts off." Despite that, Jackson expressed her belief that they have the "chance to do something really special" as they continue to make a "lot of noise on and off the court." When further asked if she believes they can be the best draft class in the WNBA ever, Jackson responded with, "I feel like we definitely have the chance to be that." "I'm just excited to see what we continue to do," she added. "I feel like it was a very fun class, but I definitely believe that we do have the potential to be one of the best draft classes." It remains to be seen if Jackson's statement will prove true. However, considering that some of the biggest names in the WNBA are from their class, the group certainly has a case as the players further establish story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.
