Formula 1: Meet the women breaking barriers in motorsport

BBC News07-05-2025
It is nearly 50 years since a female driver started an F1 race - Lella Lombardi in 1976 – but women have been making other history in other areas.
Claire Dubbelman is one of those trailblazers as the first female deputy race director in F1, and the only woman to hold the FIA race director super licence.
For the Dutchwoman, working at the pinnacle of motorsport was always her intended destination.
Growing up around the sport - following it with her dad, who was a journalist - Dubbelman started her career at a grassroots championship where she described her role as "anything without a screwdriver", including doing hotel bookings for the crew, arranging the trophies for podium ceremonies and writing press releases.
She remembers having conversations with drivers about their goals and aspirations. They would often talk about their dreams of making it to Formula 1.
"They used to say: 'What is it you want to do?' And I said: 'I also want to go to Formula 1, you just want to do it in the car and I'll do it out of the car,' " she said.
The 39-year-old is now one of 91 women working for the FIA, which equates to 32% of its workforce. Nearly half - 43 - were in senior positions as of December 2024, according to the FIA.
"We have really strong female representation and that's what I'm really proud of in this team," she said.
Getting there has not always been a smooth ride, though.
Looking back on her early career, she vividly remembers an unpleasant interaction when she entered the office belonging to a chief executive of a racetrack to negotiate a contract.
"I walked into the office and the guy opposite me said: 'What are you doing here?' And I said, 'I'm here to negotiate a contract.' He said: 'Are you sure you can do that?'"
She said motorsport was a "challenging environment especially if you're young and female".
"Being female itself is one thing but being young and female is an extra dimension because people think they can get away with more," she said. "I've definitely seen quite a bit of that."
She added that was particularly true "in the lower categories", adding: "It's harder for women. There's a lot more catcalling, a lot more bias."
In the face of those challenges, Dubbelman has learned the importance of resilience.
"I've worked very hard to get here and I will not let anyone dictate whether I give up or not," she added.
Some F1 teams have reported general increases in the numbers of women in their workforces in each of their respective gender pay gap reports, with data from 2021 to 2024 showing Mercedes went from 12% female employees to 17.9%.
Over the same period McLaren increased from 13% to 20%, and Alpine rose from 11% to 14%.
Dubbelman hopes the sport continues its drive towards getting more women working in the industry.
"I think if this sport can be as welcoming as possible and see the value of different perspectives in the paddock, I think that will be a very nice place to work."

Trump claims Jaguar Land Rover is in 'turmoil' after rebrand

Donald Trump has claimed Jaguar Land Rover is in 'absolute turmoil' after the company's 'totally disastrous woke ' rebrand. The US President labelled the British car maker's recent advert, which featured brightly dressed models, as a 'total disaster' and 'stupid'. Trump was scathing of Jaguar as he compared the firm's fortunes to those of clothing brand American Eagle in a rant on his social media platform Truth Social. ' Sydney Sweeney , a registered Republican, has the "HOTTEST" ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are "flying off the shelves",' he wrote. 'Go get 'em Sydney! On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned, and the company is in absolute turmoil. 'Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad. Shouldn't they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke.' Trump ended the post by saying that 'being woke is losers'. It was announced last week that Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell is to retire at the end of this year. Mardell, 64, has been at the company for more than three decades including the last two years as chief executive during one of the most transformative periods in the firm's recent history. Arguably his biggest involvement has been his role in Jaguar's controversial 'woke' rebrand and shift to an electric-only premium car brand from 2026. Last month JLR said it was axing 500 management roles , which are going as part of a voluntary redundancy programme for managers in the UK. A spokesman said: 'As part of normal business practice, we regularly offer eligible employees the opportunity to leave JLR through limited voluntary redundancy programmes.' Sales of the luxury car manufacturer appear to have nose-dived following its controversial move to scrap its iconic 'growler' big cat logo in November. The firm's rebrand saw it replace the well-known badge in favour of a geometric 'J' design - which lovers of the brand raged looked like the logo on a handbag clasp. And as the firestorm surrounding the famed car maker's change continues to engulf it , sales at Jaguar Europe have plunged a staggering 97.5 per cent. But the British car marque has insisted the reason for the freefall in sales is not because of a lack of support or an image overhaul - but because it has stopped making older models as it focuses on its relaunch with an all-electric offering. Defending the news, the firm said it was 'pointless' to compare figures for 2024 and 2025, as 'Jaguar is not currently on sale in the UK' while it goes through its 'sunset period' of radical change. A spokeswoman for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said: 'Jaguar's transformation towards a new portfolio of pure-electric vehicles was announced as part of the Reimagine strategy in 2021. JLR always envisaged a period when the current range would "no longer be on sale" before the introduction of the new Jaguar collection. 'Production of XE, XF, F-TYPE, I-PACE and E-PACE all came to an end in 2024 as part of that transition. This strategic "sunset" of the product range is going to plan and will allow Jaguar to transform and reposition the brand for the future. 'Comparing Jaguar sales to 2024 is pointless as we are no longer producing vehicles in 2025 with low levels of retail inventory available. Jaguar's rebranding is not related to a sales decline.' Jaguar has not announced an official date for when its new fleet of high-end electric motors will hit the forecourt. It stopped sales of current Jaguars on November 11 as it prepared for its next generation of luxury vehicles to arrive. Defending the campaign late last year, JLR's Managing Director Rawdon Glover told the Financial Times: 'If we play in the same way that everybody else does, we'll just get drowned out.'

Newcastle pushing hard to agree Benjamin Sesko deal with RB Leipzig after being told the striker is willing to join them - with Man United still in the race but yet to make formal offer

Newcastle are tonight pushing ahead to agree a deal with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko after being given encouragement the striker wants to join. It is not known what the Slovenian's camp have communicated to Manchester United, who are also in the race to sign the 22-year-old, and sources have stressed that all outcomes are still possible. But Newcastle want to move quickly to agree terms with Leipzig, after the Bundesliga club sought to negotiate the structure of an offer totalling £70million over the weekend. Sesko is Newcastle's top attacking target and there is a determination to accelerate a deal, especially after they were told on Monday he is willing to sign for the club. Man United 's interest remains - and it was thought last week that Old Trafford was his preferred destination - but unlike Newcastle, they did not table a formal offer over the weekend. The Magpies would like an outcome one way or the other over the next 24 hours, given their need to bring in a striker ahead of the season opener at Aston Villa a week on Saturday. Alexander Isak remains intent on a move to Liverpool, but the Premier League champions will only return with a new offer once Newcastle have the Swede's replacement lined up.

Red Bull suspicion raised after Max Verstappen struggle at Hungarian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen qualified eighth for the Hungarian Grand Prix and slipped back one place further by the end of the Budapest race on a wretched weekend for Red Bull Max Verstappen has been told that playing even a small role in the Formula 1 title fight this season is now "impossible". That is the verdict of Helmut Marko who has also shared what Red Bull"suspect" was the issue which limited the Dutchman's pace at the Hungarian Grand Prix. ‌ It was a difficult second event in charge for team principal Laurent Mekies. Verstappen qualified eighth but could not make progress in the race and finished one place lower in ninth, while Yuki Tsunoda suffered another Q1 exit in qualifying and, starting from the pit lane with a new engine, did not trouble the points-scoring positions. ‌ Verstappen remains third in the drivers' standings and the nearest challenger to the runaway McLaren pair of Lando Norris, who won the Budapest race, and championship leader Oscar Piastri. But his result in Hungary saw him add just two points to his total. ‌ Red Bull came into the season hoping to help their star driver to a fifth consecutive title, but long-serving team adviser Marko has now conceded that will not happen. "That's impossible, absolutely," he told German-language outlet Speedweek. Regarding how the race panned out for Verstappen, the Austrian added: "It did not go very well. A pit stop would have been better, because overtaking was really difficult on this track. So maybe sixth or even fifth place was possible." ‌ Verstappen had complained about his car for most of the weekend and never looked comfortable behind the wheel. Marko believes, though, that the problem was circuit-specific and should not continue to affect them after the summer break. He said: "The tyres were not working. I think it was only a concern here and it will not happen again if our suspicion about the cause [of Verstappen's lack of pace and grip] is confirmed." Reacting to his weekend, Verstappen seemed to be in the dark about why his car had been so poor. He said: "It is very complicated to explain. This weekend nothing worked. In Spa, we had a much more competitive weekend. I know we are not on the level of McLaren, who are doing a great job this year, but this is weird for us." But in the time over the summer break that they are allowed to work, Red Bull need to figure out how to get their RB21 working again. And Verstappen will be at the heart of those internal discussions – not that he was willing to reveal much. He said: "It is a fully open discussion between everyone. There are always a few ideas that you look into. But, of course, I cannot go into detail."
