Washington Post26-01-2025
ROME — New AC Milan coach Sergio Conceição dropped down to his knees on the San Siro sideline, unleashed a loud scream and then wrapped his arms around an assistant in an emotional embrace when Samuel Chukwueze bundled in the winner five minutes into stoppage time.
Conceição has struggled at times to transmit his desire and grit to a team that has struggled for consistency in Serie A .

Christian Vieri backs Lookman at Inter & picks Chelsea to win Premier League

Serie A and Italy legend Christian Vieri has given a lengthy interview to the Gazzetta dello Sport where he praised the work of Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, backing the Blues to lift the 2025-26 Premier League and claiming 'for now Inter have the best squad' in Serie A, 'especially if they land Lookman' but that 'signing De Bruyne speaks for itself' for Napoli. Vieri also said that he 'hopes' new Inter head coach Cristian Chivu will get 'more time than clubs like Inter, Milan and Juve usually give in Italy.' 'Lookman is a game-changer' – Vieri Ademola Lookman has been linked strongly with a move from Atalanta to Inter, with speculation surrounding a deal increasing in the last 24 hours. After praising Inter for signing young players like Ange-Yoan Bonny, who Vieri described as 'very young, very fast – and when you're that fast, that's a real weapon,' he said that an 'experienced' player 'like Lookman is different. He makes the difference, he changes games. If you can get someone like Lookman, you get him – no question.' Lookman scored 15 Serie A goals for Atalanta last campaign – marking three consecutive seasons in Serie A with double-digits in goals scored. Inter see Lookman as a strong opportunity to reinforce their attack ahead of the upcoming campaign. Vieri: 'Club World Cup a great tournament; Chelsea will win the Premier League' Vieri was present in the USA for the Club World Cup and praised the 'great tournament', lauding Gianni Infantino as the 'best president in FIFA history'. Chelsea won the tournament, defeating PSG in the final. Vieri 'thought PSG would win' but argued 'when you win all the time, you get cocky. And then comes the slap in the face because there are others hungrier than you.' Vieri was very complimentary of the work Enzo Maresca is doing at Chelsea, saying that 'he worked with Guardiola for years, and it shows. It wasn't just about high pressing, it was possession-based, organised football with fast players, quality and power, which always adds something. For me, Chelsea will win the Premier League next season and be a contender for the Champions League.'

Donnarumma demands an obstacle for Serie A return as Manchester City and Bayern circle

The contract of Gianluigi Donnarumma at PSG is due to expire next summer and a number of top clubs are eager to sign the goalkeeper but reports in Italy claim that his wage demands may prove too big a barrier for the 26-year-old to return to Serie A. Donnarumma, hot off the back of a 2024-25 season that saw him help PSG lift the Champions League trophy, has just ten months left on his currently deal with the Ligue 1 champions and appears to be as likely to leave as he is to stay. Reports from Tuttosport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, suggest that Bayern Munich and Manchester City are among the top teams coveting Donnarumma's signature but that any Italian team could face the obstacle of the goalkeeper's wage demands. PSG prepare lower wage for Donnarumma as top clubs prepared to offer more The reports suggest that PSG are not prepared to offer Donnarumma the same €12 million per season that he currently earns as a part of his contract. Instead, it is being suggested that the Parisian side will offer €8-9 million base salary with the other €3-4 million tied to individual and club performance objectives. In much the same way that the Ligue 1 side are not willing to give the Italian the base €12 million per season, most Serie A clubs will also struggle to meet this figure. Which is why, as per the reports, big clubs in the rest of Europe are currently leading the race.

Leeds' new signing Jaka Bijol suspended for Premier League opener

Leeds United will be without their £15million ($20.1m) centre-back Jaka Bijol for the first game of the upcoming Premier League season. The former Udinese defender will serve a one-match suspension for the red card he received in his final Serie A fixture last season. Bijol started the match against Fiorentina as captain on May 25, but he would not last beyond the 39th minute. The 26-year-old was booked in the ninth minute, but that did not deter him from a full-blooded challenge in the 39th minute. Advertisement Udinese were leading 1-0 through Lorenzo Lucca when Bijol found himself venturing upfield. The Slovenian went to ground and cleanly got a boot to the ball in the final third. Unfortunately for him, referee Matteo Marcenaro was not happy. As Bijol stretched for the ball, his momentum carried him through opponent Pablo Mari, who was upended after the ball had been pushed away. He received his second yellow card and was off before half-time. Leeds were aware of the red card when they made the move for Bijol, but it was unclear whether the suspension would carry over from Serie A into the Premier League. That was clarified for the club this week and he will now have to wait for his debut until Arsenal, on August 23, at the earliest. It leaves Daniel Farke, as it stands, Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Sebastiaan Bornauw as his recognised centre-back options for the Everton game on August 18. (Jure Makovec/AFP via Getty Images)
