Weather conditions play spoilsport on inaugural day of Indian Open of Surfing
The three-day premier surfing competition is the second stop of the National Surfing Championship Series 2025. It is being organised by Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India. Earlier this week, due to forecasted adverse weather conditions, the organising committee took the precautionary decision to shift the event venue from Sasihithlu Beach to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach. However, the weather remained unfavorable, with persistent heavy rainfall thwarting any competitive activity on day one, even at the revised location, as per a press release.
Day two of the national championship will feature over 50 top surfers, such as Ramesh Budhial, Kishore Kumar, Ajeesh Ali, Harish Muthu, Kamali P, Shrishti Selvam, and Sinchana Gowda, battling it out in four categories: Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms (U-16) Boys, and Groms (U-16) Girls.
'All participants assembled at the venue by 8 a.m. this morning, marking the commencement of day one of the event. The weather unfolded as forecasted, with heavy rain but minimal wind. Despite the inclement weather, the day was efficiently utilized for the registration process and distribution of event kits, including t-shirts and access bands. A detailed surfers' briefing was subsequently conducted, during which participants were familiarised with the venue and provided with an overview of the schedule and expectations for the upcoming days. While weather conditions limited activity today, we remain optimistic that tomorrow will bring improved conditions, allowing for the commencement of competitive sessions on the water,' said Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President, Surfing Federation of India.
'Today's conditions proved very challenging. After careful assessment, we found the sea too rough and the intervals between waves too short, making it extremely difficult for surfers to paddle out safely. On top of that, intermittent rain reduced visibility significantly. Considering these factors, we made the decision to call off today's session in the interest of safety. Fortunately, tomorrow's forecast looks more promising, and we hope to resume as planned', said, Nawaz Jabbar, Contest Director, NMPA IOS

'The best team that Ive played for...': Anderson speaks on Englands 2011 Ashes series winning unit
London [UK], July 20 (ANI): Former England pacer James Anderson described the unit which won the 2011 Ashes series in Australia as the "best team he had played in" for Three Lions, saying that several members of the group were at "peak of their powers". Anderson was speaking on Sky Sports about the landmark series win. In 2010-11 season, England crushed Australia by 3-1 in their own territory, their first win in Australia since 1986-87. It was their second-successive Ashes series win on the trot, with left-handed batter Andrew Strauss at the helm of a powerful England side. Experienced star Anderson along with Stuart Broad, Chris Tremlett, Steven Finn Tim Bresnan formed a great pace unit. Graeme Swann was the spin powerhouse of the side. As far as batting was concerned, skipper Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott formed a formidable group. Speaking on Sky Sports about the side, Anderson said, "I think that was probably the best team that I have played in for for England. We had a group of players that were all reaching the the peak of their powers. We'd all played sort of 60 tests or more. So we had experience as well. And yeah, it was 24 years since we won in Australia and to win there and also for me personally to contribute especially, I had a bit of a sort of rough time leading up to that where I had not performed well away from England. So to do it in Australia and yeah to have a contribution towards a winning series was was great." Anderson pointed out that all of their three wins were by an innings margin. "We scored loads of runs. Alastair Cook was was amazing on that tour. I think he got 700 runs. So yeah, we we did it in a a great way," he added. The 42-year-old also recalled flying back home to welcome his second daughter during a "greuelling" three month tour. "So, like I I think I slept for like 2 weeks after when I got home. It was just an amazing amazing experience and it is hard to sort of describe when as I said we we have not won there for such a long time. We have not won there since. So, it is obviously a special thing to achieve," he added. Cook (766 runs in five Tests at an average of 127.66, with three centuries and two fifties) and Anderson (24 wickets in five Tests averaging 26.04 with three four-fers) topped the batting and bowling charts. England have a chance to achieve their first Ashes series win after 14 years in Australia once again, with the first Test starting at Perth from November 21 onwards. (ANI)

'They will do it. They have that sense of desire, perseverance and determination. Gill will make his mark as a batter and as a captain. I think he has done really well," he said. The former all-rounder also praised KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant for stepping up in tough conditions. 'Then we saw how KL Rahul batted, offered some solidity as an opener and got good support from Yashasvi Jaiswal. Then Rishabh Pant, he has batted so differently and his wicketkeeping has been great," he added. Gill has been the standout performer for India so far, scoring 607 runs in six innings at an average of 101.16, including three centuries and a best of 269. His deputy, Rishabh Pant is the second-highest score of the series (425 runs in six innings), but his participation in the fourth Test is still in doubt. Pant injured his finger while keeping wicket at Lord's. He got hurt in the 34 th over of the first innings and didn't keep wickets thereafter. Though he walked out to bat in both innings, Dhruv Jurel replaced him behind the wickets. A conundrum looms over India's pace attack as well. Since Bumrah is slated to play only three matches, it's yet to be known if he will turn up at Old Trafford. With Arshdeep Singh reportedly getting ruled out and Akash Deep dealing with a recurring back problem, it will be a tough task for the team management to pick the perfect set of bowlers. WI vs AUS: Australia names Playing XI for first T20I against West Indies; Owen set to make debut, Fraser-McGurk returns
Australia announced its Playing XI for the first T20 International against West Indies, to be held at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Monday. While Mitchell Owen is set to make his international debut, Matthew Short is ruled out of the series due to a minor side strain and has been sent back to Australia. Jake Fraser-McGurk will take Short's place in the team as opener. Fraser-McGurk, who has struggled for form of late in international cricket, had been added to the squad as a replacement for injured pacer Spencer Johnson. With Australia resting a host of senior players, including Travis Head and the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, the series will provide an opportunity to finetune the squad ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year. 'First and foremost, it's always 'we're representing Australia, we're here to win the series' and culturally, that's how we want to go about it. There will be guys that get opportunities. We've obviously got a few guys missing for this series (for) a well-earned rest. But we want guys to be flexible, fluid, and come together as a team and be really connected. We don't want anyone to come in here and feel like they have to prove themselves.
