Randhawa was announced as the SAD candidate after she joined the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led outfit. She was part of the Azad group.
She joined the SAD along with 43 sitting sarpanches, eight municipal councillors and dozens of former sarpanches.
Live Events
She said the Azad group had taken this decision in the interest of the constituency as well as the 'Panth' and Punjab.
Randhawa was also made the 'halqa' (constituency) in-charge on the occasion.
Addressing a political conference in Jhabal village here, Badal said, "Today's congregation has set the tone for a SAD victory in the forthcoming by-election."
He also appointed party leader Gulzar Singh Ranike as the in-charge for
Tarn Taran bypoll
campaign.
Asserting that the SAD represented Punjab, Badal appealed to Punjabis to unite under the party's flag to counter "outside forces who wanted to loot the state."
He alleged that these "forces" were behind the 2015 acts of sacrilege which were committed with the sole aim of "weakening" the Akali Dal.
Badal accused AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal of arriving at an "arrangement with builders to hand over 40,000 acres of fertile land to them" under his party's land pooling policy.
"This is being done to collect money to contest elections and fill the central coffers of AAP," he alleged.
"We will not let this government acquire even one inch of land," he added.

Will Congress turncoat still get minority vote in Ward 63 bypoll?
1 2 Jaipur: On one side is a Congress neta who recently joined the BJP, and on the other is the minority vote. Although considered a Congress citadel for years, this time a tough fight is expected in the bypoll to Ward 63 of Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Heritage. The bypoll is set for next month following the death of Sushila Devi, who won in 2020 on a Congress ticket. Her son, Sunil Meena, was an influential Congress leader in the ward but he recently switched over to the BJP. Being a woman-reserved ward, BJP is planning to field Meena's wife, Seema Meena, as its candidate. Now the question is whether voters of Ward 63, mostly minorities, would keep faith in Meena and his family or continue to vote for the Congress. "I am confident that if given a chance, my wife would make it for the BJP. This won't be the first time I stand against Congress from this constituency. In 2014, I contested from this seat as an independent candidate and won, defeating both BJP and Congress," said Meena. Congress, on the other side, has zeroed in on around three minority candidates, hoping to reclaim the ward with the help of the minority vote bank. More than 40% of voters in this ward are from the minority community. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Meena magic won't work this time. In 2014, it was an exception. He managed to win because the vote bank of the Congress and the voters of BJP got split. He took advantage of being an independent candidate and won the election by a very low margin. This time, the entire minority vote bank would elect a Congress candidate again," said Yunus Qureshi, a Congress leader from the Kishanpole area and the former secretary of the party's minority cell. The state election commission has already started preparations for the bypoll and will announce the date soon.

Ex-sarpanch acquitted in POCSO case
Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has acquitted a former sarpanch who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024 under the POCSO Act for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, ruling that the case appeared to have been fabricated by a political rival. Babu Singh Lodhi, in his appeal against a sessions court order, said the medical report of the girl was negative, and his political rival Rajendra Singh was the one who lodged an FIR against him. During hearing of the petition, a bench of justices Vivek Agarwal and AK Singh found that both Lodhi and Rajendra Singh had been sarpanch of Patharia in Damoh district, and they were political rivals. The girl's mother admitted in the court that Rajendra Singh was the one who took them to the police station to lodge the complaint. The minor girl also told the court that she had told Rajendra Singh about the incident first. She had gone to school after the incident and Rajendra Singh, who used to visit her home, brought her back from the school. After coming back home, she took a bath and then went to the police station to lodge the report with Rajendra Singh. The medical report of the girl was also negative. In view of the circumstances of the case, the court set aside the order of the trial court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has acquitted a former sarpanch who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024 under the POCSO Act for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, ruling that the case appeared to have been fabricated by a political rival. Govt's new bill plans setting up of National Sports Board
File photo NEW DELHI: The Union govt is set to introduce a sports governance Bill in the Parliament session starting Monday. It has been drafted as part of India's preparations to strengthen its bid for Olympic Games 2036. The proposed bill, prepared by the sports ministry, has been approved by the Cabinet, which has asked it to come up with a better title for the same. Sources said the bill gains importance considering that sports governance is an important parameter for bid evaluation. Recently, India officially presented Ahmedabad's bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bill provides for setting up of a National Sports Board (NSB), a central authority responsible for granting recognition to national sports governing bodies (NSGBs) and ensuring compliance. The NSB will have the flexibility and autonomy to prepare requisite guidelines and regulations for governance of sports. The Bill mandates the formation of an athlete committee in each NSGB for representation of athletes. Officials said NSGBs will have five members, including two sportspersons of outstanding merit and two members from the athlete committee, with sound representation of women. The NSGBs will be governed by the Olympic Charter and other regulations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Shop Sale Libas Undo There will be mandatory representation of sportspersons of outstanding merit and members from the athlete committee in the general body and the executive committee. There is also a proposal in the bill for a National Sports Election Panel for ensuring free and fair elections to NSGBs. Further, to reduce the number of court cases, the Bill proposes setting up of a National Sports Tribunal, which will serve as a single-window system for resolution of disputes. It proposes to allocate Rs 10 crore for setting up the NSB and the tribunal.
