Luke Humphries fires back at Premier League darts critics as yet another date is added
Champion Luke Humphries has hit back at critics of the Premier League set-up.
The world No.1 took the title at the end of a 17-week darts marathon which turned off many observers.
Humphries and Luke Littler clashed for a ninth time in the campaign in the Final and Raymond van Barneveld is amongst the snipers who think that's way too much and is taking away the spectacle.
But, as PDC chief Barry Hearn revealed plans to add Antwerp in Belgium to the PL schedule in 2026, Cool Hand responded to enquiries about changing the tournament's current make-up and said: 'Can you give me advice on how you change it? If me and Luke play in every Players and Euro Tour, every major and every Premier League, because that is what the fans, they want all these darts, if we make the final of every tournament, you are going to see us play 40-50 times a year.
'The only reason we play each other so much is because we end up making the finals. I don't know how you stop it. I think as much as everyone wants to change the Premier League, I am happy to be in it.
'I don't care what it does, what you do, whether it's a league format, a singular night, it doesn't stop the fact that me and Luke might play each 10-15 times a year. That's because of how much darts there are. We can play each other next weekend if we make the final [in Copenhagen].
'The magnitude of darts now, we are playing every week and sometimes you are playing the Players Championship, two or three times a week. Then a Euro Tour. If you are the two best players in the world performing so well and making the final every week, you will keep playing each other every week.
'I would not even suggest it. I honestly don't know. It's up to the PDC. I'm happy playing it. I am not going to be the one that wants to change it. Of course, they do change it, I am happy with that as well.
'But for me, I won't be sitting here moaning, saying I don't want to play this or I want to play in this. I am happy to be involved. The PDC know what they are doing. If this is the best format for them, then they will do it. It still does good numbers, the fans still come, still gets good numbers on Sky Sports. They know what they are doing. Not for people like me to change things, it's up for people like me to work hard and win titles. Let's not change it.'
Such is the schedule, top stars such as Humphries get little time to savour successes. After his triumph at London's O2, he smiled: 'I want to have a beer and celebrate.'
But asked if he'd allow himself a treat, he said: 'It's hard. I don't know. What do you treat yourself to really? I have bought a brand new house. I have bought a new car. I don't know. I am not one of those people that goes out and just wastes my money on nothing. I will have a nice holiday. That will be something. I don't think about money, I think about winning big titles and the money comes with it.
'When you pick up trophies like this, you don't think about how relentless it is. It makes it all worthwhile.'

Truth behind Liverpool's Alexander Isak transfer stance as Newcastle fear comes to light
Alexander Isak is to join his Newcastle team-mates next week after the Magpies rejected a £110m bid from Liverpool but his future appears far from certain at St James' Park Newcastle fear Liverpool are ready to play the same waiting game that once landed Virgil van Dijk in their bid to take £150million-rated striker Alexander Isak to Anfield. The Premier League champions have indicated they are prepared to park their interest in the Swedish international after seeing a £110million bid rejected by the Toon. Isak has set his sights on a move to Merseyside and has been using the training facilities at former club Real Sociedad while his team-mates are on a pre-season tour of Asia after missing the trip with a minor thigh injury. The 25-year-old risks alienating the St James' Park fans despite reassurances from manager Eddie Howe that he still has the full support of the club. If the relationship sours then that would crank up the pressure on the Tyneside club to allow Isak to get his wish by doing a deal with the Reds. Liverpool have been here before with Van Dijk. They backed off from making a move for the Dutchman when Southampton reported them to the Premier League over their conduct during negotiations in the summer of 2017. The complaint was dropped when Jurgen Klopp went public to declare their interest in the defender over - but five months later Van Dijk was snapped up for £75million. 'I really don't know what is going to happen next but, from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again. 'I know where he is through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any detail. The situation is far from ideal. It is quite complex. Lucas Paqueta's lawyer claims gambling charges cost West Ham star Premier League medal
West Ham star Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of betting breaches after a two-year investigation by the Football Association and his lawyer has now spoken out about the situation Lucas Paqueta may have cleared his name over the gambling charges that have hung over him for the last two years - but the man who led the Brazilian's legal defence believes the episode has cost him a Premier League medal. Paqueta, 27, was on the brink of an £85million move from West Ham to Manchester City when it emerged that he was being investigated by the FA over suspicions that he had deliberately got himself booked in four different games as part of a spot-fixing sting. An independent commission ruled during the week that the FA had failed to prove their case - although two charges claiming that the midfielder failed to cooperate with the process were upheld. Now Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level, has revealed how the case has taken a heavy toll on Paqueta - despite the positive outcome. Campbell said: 'Lucas' life has basically been on hold for the last two years. 'He woke up every morning with the fear that this could be the day when his career was going to be over. Of course, Lucas is delighted with the outcome of the commission - but what shouldn't be forgotten is that there is an alternative universe where he moves to Manchester City and now has a Premier League winner's medal. 'The strain he has been under since the charges were announced in August 2023 has been incredible. That's something that shouldn't be forgotten in all of this. This case has come at a considerable cost to Lucas, both as a person and as a professional footballer.' Paqueta's legal team are now awaiting the commission's written findings before whether to appeal against the decision that he failed to give investigators the required help. There have also been suggestions that he could now sue the FA for damages. Campbell, however, accepts that the FA has a duty to make sure that the game they govern is clean. He said: 'I've seen suggestions that it's embarrassing for the FA, but I don't agree with that because their role as a regulator means they have to bring charges if they feel there's a case to answer. 'Lucas has now answered those charges and I am sure the FA's legal team will take some valuable lessons from this because that's what good lawyers do. The integrity of sport is paramount. 'We have to believe that what we are seeing on the pitch is genuine, so all governing bodies must monitor this kind of thing. The charges brought against Lucas were incredibly serious and that brings a requirement for real care to be taken. 'The sheer scale of evidence and information from both sides has been massive. That's why this has taken two years.' Campbell added: 'Lucas was very emotional when I told him about the decision. 'To have this weighing on his shoulders, knowing all along that he didn't do what he had been accused of, was unbearable at times. For him to still be able to play in front of 10s of thousands of people once or twice a week is remarkable. 'Given that mental strength, I think he will get past this issue pretty quickly and get back to being the fantastic player he is.'
