Why cleaner air is actually accelerating global warming

Global warming has picked up pace since around 2010, leading to the recent string of record warm years. Why this is happening is still unclear, and among the biggest questions in climate science today. Our new study reveals that reductions in air pollution – particularly in China and east Asia – are a key reason for this faster warming.
Cleanup of sulphur emissions from global shipping has been implicated in past research. But that cleanup only began in 2020, so it's considered too weak to explain the full extent of this acceleration. Nasa researchers have suggested that changes in clouds could play a role, either through reductions in cloud cover in the tropics or over the North Pacific.
One factor that has not been well quantified, however, is the effect of monumental efforts by countries in east Asia, notably China, to combat air pollution and improve public health through strict air quality policies. There has already been a 75% reduction in east Asian sulphur dioxide emissions since around 2013, and that cleanup effort picked up pace just as global warming began accelerating.
Our study addresses the link between east Asian air quality improvements and global temperature, building on the efforts of eight teams of climate modellers across the world.
We have found that polluted air may have been masking the full effects of global warming. Cleaner air could now be revealing more of the human-induced global warming from greenhouse gases.
In addition to causing millions of premature deaths, air pollution shields the Earth from sunlight and therefore cools the surface. There has been so much air pollution that it has held human-induced warming in check by up to 0.5°C over the last century.
With the cleanup of air pollution, something that's vital for human health, this artificial sunshade is removed. Since greenhouse gas emissions have kept on increasing, the result is that the Earth's surface is warming faster than ever before.
Modelling the cleanup
Our team used 160 computer simulations from eight global climate models. This enabled us to better quantify the effects that east Asian air pollution has on global temperature and rainfall patterns. We simulated a cleanup of pollution similar to what has happened in the real world since 2010. We found an extra global warming of around 0.07°C.
While this is a small number compared with the full global warming of around 1.3°C since 1850, it is still enough to explain the recent acceleration in global warming when we take away year-to-year swings in temperature from natural cycles such as El Niño, a climate phenomenon in the Pacific that affects weather patterns globally.
Based on long-term trends, we would have expected around 0.23°C of warming since 2010. However, we actually measured around 0.33°C. While the additional 0.1°C can largely be explained by the east Asian air pollution cleanup, other factors include the change in shipping emissions and the recent accelerated increase in methane concentrations in the atmosphere.
Air pollution causes cooling by reflecting sunlight or by changing the properties of clouds so they reflect more sunlight. The cleanup in east Asian air pollution influences global temperatures because it reduces the shading effect of the pollution over east Asia itself. It also means less pollution is blown across the north Pacific, causing clouds in the east Pacific to reflect less sunlight.
The pattern of these changes across the North Pacific simulated in our models matches that seen in satellite observations. Our models and temperature observations also show relatively strong warming over the North Pacific, downwind from east Asia.
The main source of global warming is still greenhouse gas emissions, and a cleanup of air pollution was both necessary and overdue. This did not cause the additional warming but rather, removed an artificial cooling that has for a time helped shield us from some of the extreme weather and other well-established consequences of climate change.
Global warming will continue for decades. Indeed, our past and future emissions of greenhouse gases will affect the climate for centuries. However, air pollution is quickly removed from the atmosphere, and the recent acceleration in global warming from this particular unmasking may therefore be short-lived.

Scientists have discovered a 'super-Earth' awash with oceans on one side and baked on the other after it flashed a repeated signal. The exoplanet, TOI-1846 b, is almost two times larger and four times heavier than Earth, and a year is only four Earth days. TOI-1846 b is 154 light years away – to put that into perspective, it would take a car driving at 60mph about 2billion years to get there. The alien world orbits a dim, reddish ball of gas called a red dwarf star in the northern constellation Lyra. Scientists discovered it after tracing back a flickering light recorded by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite in March. By pointing both space and ground-based telescopes up at the signal, researchers realised it was a planet blotting out a few hundredths of a percent of the light of its star as it orbited past. The team wrote in a recently published paper TOI-1846 b falls into the so-called 'radius gap' – not quite a rocky planet, not quite a gas giant. TOI-1846 b probably has a layer of dense ice underneath and is awash in oceans of water, topped by a thin atmosphere. It would be about 295°C on the planet's surface, as only one side of it is ever facing its sun. Abderahmane Soubkiou, lead researcher at Oukaimeden Observatory in Morocco, said: 'We have validated TOI-1846 b using TESS and multicolour ground-based photometric data, high-resolution imaging, and spectroscopic observations.' But while that sounds like a lot, more tests and observations are needed to figure out the planet's atmosphere and composition. There's only a slim chance that life could be wriggling around the planet's oceans given the blistering temperatures. But its host star, TOI-1846, makes the chances of this not too bad elsewhere. Compared to our Sun, the 7.2billion years old TOI-1846 is tiny – just 0.4 times the size of our neighbourhood star and is only TOI-1846. Red dwarfs are the most common type of star and, as they're cooler, their habitable zones are far closer to them. This means planetary systems that fall in these zones are far easier to spot. For now, scientists will keep looking at the star to see if any other planets are drifting around it – ones further out could more safely have water. To determine if aliens are calling any planets around TOI-1846 home, for example, scientists will now need to conduct radial velocity (RV) observations, looking at how the planet and its star wobble. This method, called transit timing, has been used to confirm more than 630 exoplanets so far across 7,600 transit events witnessed by TESS. Astronomers had long suspected that other planets like the ones whizzing around our Sun exist, but struggled to spot them. New study could help reduce number of sports-related head injuries - and deaths from catastrophic impacts

Korean experts have pinpointed how to make the best sport helmet for protecting athletes' brains. Head injuries are a common risk in many sports, from cricket, rugby, football and roller derby to name a few. Some studies suggest up to 40 per cent of athletes will suffer an injury over a year's worth of training and competing. In sports like cricket the risk can rise to 70 per cent, with just over one in 10 of these injuries to critical areas like the head, neck and face mainly due to a hard ball launched at high speeds from bowler to batsman The consequences of such injuries can be devastating. Aussie cricketer Phillip Hughes, 25, was famously killed in 2014 after a devastating head injury delivered by a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott. He was later confirmed to have died from a vertebral artery dissection, a tear in one of the arteries in the neck that feeds the brainstem oxygen rich blood. Such an injury carries the risk of causing a stroke. Now, a team of researchers have come up with a way to assess the best helmet material to reduce serious head injuries. Scientists from Chongqing Jiaotong University alongside Chongqing No. 7 Middle School, analysed the performance of three different helmet materials. These were a strong plastic called Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), fibreglass alloys, and aluminium composites. Using computer simulations, the team made digital copies of helmets made from each material. These digital helmets were then put through a variety of computerised impact scenarios based on cricket with the team analysing how well they protected a simulated human head and brain within. They found that for training and at a recreational level an ABS helmet provided sufficient protection. However, at an elite level—where balls travel at a faster, and therefore more dangerous, speed—fibreglass or aluminium alloys performed better. They added while either of these had its advantages, they noted that fibreglass being more brittle than aluminium gave it an advantage as it distributed the stress of an impact across its entire surface, lowering the risk of a traumatic injury. Author of the study, which was published in the journal AIP Advances, Tao Wang said while the results are interesting they are not universal to every sport which each have their unique stresses. 'Each sport should be checked individually, because loading conditions are different in different sports,' he said. Government data suggests there are about 6,500 sports related concussion admissions to hospitals in England per year. The issue of head injuries in sport has come under increasing focus in recent years due to fears that repeated blows could increase the risk of dementia. A 2023 study commissioned by the Football Association and Professional Footballers' Association, found professional footballers have triple the likelihood of being diagnosed with dementia than the general population. However, subsequent studies have found this isn't likely to be a risk for amateur players. In fact, playing sport was found to be protective against dementia most likely due to regularly doing exercise a known factor that protects against the memory robbing disorder.

The SpaceX capsule undocked from the International Space Station on Monday and parachuted into the ocean off the Southern California coast, less than 24 hours later. The crew of four launched nearly three weeks ago on a flight chartered by the Houston company Axiom Space. Axiom's Peggy Whitson, the most experienced US astronaut, served as commander. Joining her were India's Shubhanshu Shukla, Poland's Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski and Hungary's Tibor Kapu, whose countries paid more than 65 million dollars (£48 million) apiece for the mission. Moments after splashdown, speaking on the radio, Dr Whitson said: 'Thanks for the great ride and safe trip.' The visiting astronauts conducted dozens of experiments in orbit while celebrating their heritage. The last time India, Poland and Hungary put anyone in space was during the late 1970s and 1980s, launching with the Soviets. It was Axiom's fourth mission to the orbiting outpost since 2022, part of Nasa's ongoing effort to open up space to more businesses and people. The company is one of several developing their own space stations to replace the current one. Nasa plans to abandon the outpost in 2030, after more than 30 years of operation.
