St Paul's Cathedral strict eligibility rules for couples as Mel B ties the knot

Daily Mirror10 hours ago
Spice Girl Mel B and new husband Rory McPhee tied the knot in style earlier today, with the happy couple exchanging vows at St Paul's Cathedral
Mel B has married for the third time. The Spice Girls star – who was previously married to Jimmy Gulzar between 1998 and 2000 and Stephen Belafonte from 2007 to 2016 – tied the knot with Rory McPhee at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on Saturday.
Mel, 50, wore a traditional white gown, adorned with pearls for the wedding, while her new husband Rory, 37, wore a traditional Scottish tartan kilt. The happy couple posed for pictures on the steps of the historic venue and shared a kiss.

The happy couple tied the knot at St Paul's Cathedral - usually a very exclusive venue when it comes to weddings. Around 30 couples marry inside the iconic building but as St Paul's is not a parish church, there are conditions on who can be married there.

On the official website, St Paul's Catherdral states: "We are able to marry members of: the Order of the British Empire, and their children, the Order of St Michael and St George, and their children, the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor, and their children, and the Cathedral Community (staff and volunteers, including Cathedral School, subject to length of service), and their children."
Mel was given permission to wed in because she was awarded an MBE in 2022 for her services to charitable causes and vulnerable women. Following the ceremony inside St Paul's, a reception at The Shard was booked for after the ceremony.
Emma Bunton was the only Spice Girl in attendance, accompanied by husband Jade Jones and their son Beau, 17. Other celebrities included Mel's sister Danielle Brown, Daisy Lowe, Katherine Ryan and Gaby Roslin.
There was no sign of Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell and Melanie Chisholm. However, Victoria shared her well wishes via social media, posting on her Instagram Stories.
She wrote: 'Congratulations @officialmelb and @rorymcphee on your special day! I couldn't be more excited for you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness! Kisses xx.'

She also shared a photo of herself and Mel B at an event together and captioned it, 'Sending you love @officialmelb. @rorymcphee is a very lucky man!'
Meanwhile, Mel's children Phoenix Chi, Madison and Angel Iris all attended the ceremony.
Mel and Rory have known each other for years but didn't start dating until 2018 and they got engaged four years later. Rory is a "family friend" of Mel's cousin, Christian Cooke, with the pair having gone to school together.
Speaking about the proposal, Rory previously told HELLO! Magazine: "I was so nervous, my lips were trembling. I'd spent ages writing down all these things I wanted to say, but when it came to it, I just babbled."
Mel responded: "Oh no, it was lovely, what you said. He told me he loved me, that I was his best friend and that he wanted to be with me for the rest of our lives."

Famous faces including former Spice Girl Emma Bunton attend wedding of Mel B

The 50-year-old singer, whose full name is Melanie Brown, announced her engagement to hairdresser Rory McPhee in October 2022. Ahead of the wedding Mel B worked closely with Evelie Bridal and Josephine Scott to design her luxury georgette crepe gown. Celebrity faces were spotted arriving at the ceremony on Saturday afternoon, including Bunton, known as Baby Spice, along with her partner Jade Jones and son Beau. Model Daisy Lowe and her husband Jordan Saul were also seen arriving at the ceremony along with comedians Tom Allen and Katherine Ryan. Comedian and TV star Leigh Francis, who previously had Mel B as a team captain on his comedy panel series Celebrity Juice, also attended the wedding. Caroline Black, owner of Evelie Bridal, told the PA news agency: 'For her look at St Paul's Cathedral, Melanie B wanted a bespoke gown that embodies strength, sensuality, and timeless glamour.' The dress was described by Ms Black as a 'luxury georgette crepe gown with a sculpted corset bodice' which features 'intricate draping that hugs the silhouette and flows into a dramatic, sweeping train'. It also has a 'sheer illusion detachable jacket, hand-embellished with pearl constellations' which has been described as creating a high-neck, long-sleeve effect that frames her shoulders and adds 'ethereal elegance to complement the ceremony and honour St Paul's etiquette'. Mel B also wore a cathedral-length veil which was embroidered with scattered pearls to complete the look. Speaking about the process of styling Mel B for her wedding day, Ms Black described it as 'an honour' and 'nothing short of extraordinary'. She said: 'Helping a real Spice Girl choose her wedding dress – what could possibly top that? 'But what's truly made this experience so meaningful is getting to know Mel as just Mel, not the icon, but the woman. 'It's been such an honour.' Ms Scott said: 'Designing this gown for Mel was about capturing her fearless spirit and softness all in one look. 'She's iconic, powerful, and radiant – and this dress had to be worthy of that. 'Every detail was chosen to honour her strength and sensuality, while celebrating the woman and the love story beneath the girl power.' Mel B was previously married to Stephen Belafonte until she filed for divorce in 2017 following allegations of abuse. They have a daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte. Mel B also has two daughters, Phoenix Chi Gulzar and Angel Iris Murphy Brown, from two previous relationships.

Welsh town that famous actors call home named one of the most affordable places to live

Welsh town that famous actors call home named one of the most affordable places to live In the shadow of the steelworks lies a town that is full of hidden gems Aberavon Beach is known to be one of the longest beaches in Wales (Image: John Myers ) Ask anyone what springs to mind when they think of Port Talbot, and chances are you'll hear the same answer echo back - the steelworks. Towering chimneys and plumes of steam that have long defined the town's skyline. Yet beyond the shadow of this great steel giant, lies a different side of Port Talbot that many people who are not local to the area, may not even know about. One that is rich with natural beauty, local history and hidden gems waiting to be explored. ‌ With that in mind, it shouldn't be shocking that recent research from the online property company Zoopla has revealed Port Talbot as one of the most popular, affordable places to live in Great Britain. The famously industrial town ranked fourth in a list, based on how often three-bedroom homes were viewed online, combined with how affordable those homes are compared to local earnings. ‌ Port Talbot sits just behind Neath, Llanelli, and the Scottish town of Glenrothes, proving it's more than just steel drawing attention. One of those reasons is Afan Argoed, also known as Afan Country Park - a haven for walkers and cyclists with its miles of scenic trails, winding through the Valley's ever changing landscape. This place was a childhood favourite of mine that holds memories of long dog walks with my granddad and rare sunny day picnics down Rhyslyn car park. Afan Valley - locally known as Afan Argoed is known for its fantastic walking and cycling trails (Image: Forestry Commission Picture Library/Isobel Cameron ) Article continues below Speaking of Rhyslan car park, this is also the starting point of a fantastic walking trail, that certainly put me in my paces growing up. The route forms a figure of eight, giving walkers the choice to complete the full loop or opt for one half - perfect if you're after a shorter, three-mile stroll. The first section is a treat for fans of Richard Burton, guiding you past landmarks tied to the legendary actor who was born just down the road in Pontrhydyfen. As a kid, reaching the portrait bench was always a bit of a milestone - a quiet clearing where three steel figures stand proud: Mr Burton himself, Gavin and Stacey actor Rob Brydon and former Afan Valley head ranger Dick Wagstaff. The sculptures were chosen by the local community and installed in 2010 by the sustainable transport charity, Sustrans. ‌ Just beside the figures, visitors will find a small but powerful surprise - a listening post that plays a snippet of Richard Burton's iconic voice, reading Dylan Thomas' famous poem: Under Milk Wood. To hear his rich, haunting tones echo so close to where he once roamed is a moment that sticks with you. A trail is available in Afan Argoed in tribute to honour legendary Hollywood actor Richard Burton (Image: Martin Ellard ) The second loop of the trail leads deeper in the heart of the Afan Valley's forest, where the tall evergreens and fern-lined parks makes it easy to see why the area is often called 'Little Switzerland'. Beyond that, there are many other trails for cyclists and walkers just waiting to be explored. Stay informed on everything Neath Port Talbot by signing up to our newsletter here ‌ Aberavon Beach needs little introduction; it is a beloved stretch of coastline that has been drawing both locals and visitors for generations. With its long, sweeping sands and a sleek modern promenade overlooking Swansea bay, it's easy to see why it remains a firm favourite. That being said, the reintroduced parking charges have taken a bit of a shine off for some - but its still hard to stay away, especially during these flashes of warm weather. The beach itself is huge - one of the longest in Wales - and provides endless activities for all ages. The northern end is usually alive with sand yachting and kitesurfing making the most of the wind and waves. ‌ There is nothing better than a trip to Aberavon Beach on a warm summer's day (Image: John Myers ) What I love most about this beach is how it's a proper family spot. There are two decent play parks that provide safe, fun spaces for children to burn off energy, although Aberavon Aqua Splash might be the real highlight - complete with fountains, jets and "waterfalls" that is the perfect relief during those blistering (albeit rare) heatwaves. A site that must be a part of every local's childhood is the iconic blue whale and penguin statutes that you can check out during your walk along the beach. These relics have been here for as long as I can remember - if you know, you know. ‌ For those older kids, there's also crazy golf on the beachfront, which is a good laugh and of course the Reel Cinema; my absolute go-to. Rarely crowded, with a good choice of snacks and the added bonus of being able to wander straight onto the beach after a film for an ice cream - what's not to love? Reel Cinema sits on Aberavon seafront and for me, one of the best around (Image: Google ) Dog owners aren't left out either. While the main beach is not available to dogs during the summer months, the strong line up of cafes and restaurants are more than welcoming. Francos - a popular fish and chip shop, that is a highlight of any beach trip - is completely dog-friendly, offering your furry companion their own menu and abundance of water bowls. ‌ Memo Beach Café and Café Remos also welcomes dogs. These are the perfect places to stop for some lunch and coffee, while your dog chills at your side. Personally, a trip to Cafe Remos always has to involve their freshly made ice cream - their strawberry cones are a ten out of ten. Meanwhile, there is also The Front, which has grown quite popular over the years for their tasty burgers and reasonable prices. It's just next door to cinema and even has it's own drive-thru, which is sometimes a must as it's always super busy. If you asked most people about the best spots in Port Talbot, I am willing to bet that Aberafan Shopping Centre wouldn't be too high on the list. But I'm going to say it... there's actually quite a lot going for this place! ‌ The ageing shopping centre may be under some scrutiny, but there's a lot to love there (Image: Richard Williams ) One of its biggest claims to fame right now is Spud Fam, a baked potato business that's been making waves on TikTok. The shop is a real family operation - owned by Jordanna Landeg and her husband David, with Jordanna's brother Jude and their mum - all pitching in. Their videos give a behind-the-scenes look at the day to day running of the shop, including some of the interesting spud combos and orders that they serve up; showing just how creative - and delicious - a loaded potato can be. ‌ With a loyal following of over 12,000 on TikTok, they've made a name for themselves with their ridiculously loaded baked potatoes and fries. From classic cheese and beans to more adventurous options like beef brisket and their very own "Spud Fam's Bol", they've turned simple comfort food into something a bit more fun. Also in the shopping centre is Portablo Coffi, a coffee shop run by former steelworker Cassius. Opening at the start of this year, its already become a staple of the town thanks to its great coffee and warm, welcoming atmosphere. A wander round B and M's and Home Bargains with a coffee in one hand and a spud from your local independents in the other... sometimes it really is the simple things in life. ‌ Just a short drive from Port Talbot, lies Margam Country Park; which while not part of Port Talbot itself, is close enough to feel like an extension of the area's history. At the centre of Margam Park is the magnificent 19th century Tudor Gothic mansion, designed by architect Thomas Hopper for Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot. Built between 1830 and 1840, this Grade I listed mansion is packed with stunning features, from its soaring staircase hall to the distinctive octagonal tower. Margam Castle and it's estate was once owned by the illustrious Talbot family (Image: Robert Melen ) ‌ Margam Castle's outbuildings now house the Visitor Centre, which includes a café, gift shop and other handy facilities. Visitors can also explore the Entrance Hallway and the grand Staircase Hall, stepping back into much more opulent times. As a child, I remember Margam being the subject of plenty of ghost stories - the kind that made passing by places like the Castle and Margam Monastery a little spine-tingling. However, those eerie feelings have faded with time, replaced by a real sense of wonder at this beautiful, historic spot. There's lots more to see during a visit to Margam Park beyond the Castle itself. One of my childhood haunts was the Fairytale Village - which although a bit crusty and dusty, still has a certain charm. I loved wandering through, checking out the miniature houses inspired by classic folklore tales. ‌ For families, another must is the farm trail. It offers the chance to get up close to a variety of animals from alpacas and donkeys to pigs and pygmy goats. Even in my twenties, I had to take a stroll round there during a recent visit - although I will warn visitors to not go too close to those gates as I was almost victim to alpaca spit! Visitors to Margam also have the opportunity to feed the alpacas (Image: Margam Country Park ) My last bit of advice when visiting is - if you ever get the chance, don't miss the outdoor cinema experience. Watching a film beneath the shadow of Margam Castle is something magical; the atmosphere and setting make it an unforgettable night. Article continues below

Mel C shares sweet tribute to Spice Girls bandmate Mel B on her wedding day despite not attending - but there's still no word from Geri Halliwell

Mel C shared a sweet snap of Mel B and her new husband as they celebrated their wedding day on Saturday. Sporty Spice, 51 was notably absent as her Spice Girl bandmate said 'I do' to her fiancé Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral in London in front of a string of very A-list guests. Whilst it is unknown why she was unable to attend, she still wanted to share her excitement and happiness for the pair and took to her Instagram to share a photograph of the newlyweds. Admitting that she was 'gutted' not to be there, she made reference to the fact they would all see each other and meet up in the not too distant future. Posting some sweet words online, she gushed in the caption: 'So so happy for you both and beyond gutted I couldn't be there. Excited to celebrate with you really soon! Yippee!' It comes after Geri Halliwell has so far failed to acknowledge her Spice Girl's bandmate star-studded nuptials. Ginger Spice, 52, has so far not mentioned the wedding on her social media, with no posts emerging on her Instagram page throughout the day. Victoria Beckham also missed the ceremony but did share a sweet black and white throwback of herself and the bride with bandmates Geri, Mel C and Emma to her Instagram. Posh, 51, captioned the snap: 'Congratulations @officalmelb @rorymcphee on your special day! I couldn't be more excited for you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness! kisses xx' Emma Bunton was the only Spice Girl to attend. Hours earlier, Victoria had also posted another tribute to the couple on Friday with a photograph of herself and Mel looking glamorous together at a recent event. She gushed in a caption: 'Sending love to you @officialmelb! @rorymcphee is a very lucky man! xx' Ahead of the wedding, sources told the Mail that there was no bad blood between Victoria and Mel but was simply a scheduling conflict. They said: 'Victoria has long standing plans out of the country and she simply can't be there. She adores Mel, they get on really well despite their paths going in opposite directions. It's a real shame. Geri and Mel C were both notably absent as Mel B said 'I do' to her fiance Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral in London in front of a string of very A-list guests, as was Victoria Beckham 'There is no issue between them, they haven't fallen out. It's just one of those things.' As for Geri, she and Mel have a tempestuous relationship and at times have struggled to be in the same room without there being animosity. The two women went to war after Mel B revealed that she had an intimate relationship with Geri when the band was starting out while she was being interviewed for Piers Morgan's Life Stories programme. Geri was said to have been deeply upset by the bombshell revelation in 2019, for which Mel has apparently never apologised. Sources also say that Geri's husband Christian Horner was 'mortified' about Mel's claims. Though the other Spice Girls were absent, Emma was in attendance and looked gorgeous in a stylish pink dress as she stepped out to support Mel B. Emma was accompanied by husband Jade Jones and their son Beau, 17, with both men looking dapper for the big day. After heading out of the cathedral, Baby Spice kindly stopped and signed her autograph for an eager fan. Mel walked down the aisle for the third time in front of her celebrity friends on Saturday afternoon as she finally became Mrs McPhee. She looked every inch the blushing bride in a pearl-adorned white gown as she married Rory during the stunning ceremony. Her gown featured a sheer illusion design adorned with white pearls and a ruched bodice, with the singer adding a flowing veil to her bridal look. Meanwhile, groom Rory, 37, opted for traditional Scottish attire complete with a red and green tartan kilt. Mel arrived in a white Bentley to her wedding and flashed a radiant smile and adjusted her veil as she prepared to head inside. Meanwhile, Mel's children Phoenix Chi, Madison and Angel Iris were all smiles as they arrived to see their mother walk down the aisle. Phoenix, 26, looked lovely in a blue silk dress and coordinating fascinator, and was accompanied by partner AJ Anderson. Sibling Angel, 18, who now identifies as a male, looked smart in a black suit, while sister Madison, 13, caught the eye in a bright pink dress and matching head piece. Newlyweds Mel B and Rory stopped on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral as they shared a kiss as husband and wife Celebrities in attendance include TV presenters Gaby Roslin and Angellica Bell, comedians Katherine Ryan and Alan Carr. Leigh Francis, Cara Delevingne as well as the Spice Girls' former manager Simon Fueller were pictured at the ceremony. Mel was able to get married at St Paul's Cathedral because of her OBE, which she got in 2022 for her services to charitable causes and vulnerable women, especially Woman's Aid. It is the third time that Mel said 'I do' after first marrying Dutch backing dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1998. And when she wed Stephen Belafonte in 2007, they eloped to Las Vegas before holding a vow renewal in Egypt the following year. Mel and Stephen separated in 2016 when she accused him of emotional and physical abuse, which he has always denied. His lawyers said that during the marriage they spent her £50million fortune. Mel grew close to Rory after the breakdown of her marriage to Stephen. Last year, she said: 'He's a family friend, great hairdresser... when I went back to England, he would come over and give me hair treatments... 'And as he was nurturing my curls back, I guess he was nurturing my trust and belief in a relationship.'
