Texts on time promise elude visually impaired students in Tamil Nadu
'We breathe a sigh of relief if the textbooks arrive before the end of the term, which is rare. So, we preserve textbooks from previous batches and hand them over to new students,' said a teacher at a government higher secondary school, on condition of anonymity.
While the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation is the nodal agency for textbook distribution in the state, Braille textbooks are printed by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD) and distributed to the schools free of cost.
'When we ask for textbooks, they say there is a delay due to issues like paper shortages. The state once had a Braille press, but it was shut down. Reviving it could ensure timely supply of books for our students,' the teacher added. Another persistent issue is the lack of mathematics textbooks.
'I have been teaching for over 15 years and have never seen a Braille mathematics and science textbook beyond Class III. It has also stopped now. Higher secondary schools don't offer maths groups in Classes XI and XII, but even students till Class X don't have access to proper maths books. Schools run by NGOs provide Braille mathematics books and even maps to their students, while government schools are deprived of them,' said another teacher.
Visually impaired teachers working in government schools also face similar challenges.
'Whenever the syllabus changes, we have to buy new Braille books, spending money out of our own pocket. I teach Tamil and the syllabus was reduced this academic year. I have to spend around `1,500 per book to get the new Braille textbooks as they cost about `4 per page,' he added.
Meanwhile, sources at NIEPVD said they begin printing as soon as they receive textbook requests from government schools. The schools can expect to receive books within a few days, they said. On the lack of mathematics and science textbooks, they admitted that producing them using Nemeth code (the standard for Braille mathematics) has challenges and they are working on it. Officials also added that their new initiative to provide textbooks in more readable formats for students with low vision has not yet received proper response from all the schools.

Renovated Akshaya School for Special Children inaugurated at Railway Colony in Madurai
The renovated Akshaya School for Special Children run by Southern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation (SRWWO) was inaugurated here on Friday. The campus has also been beautified with greenery and clean surroundings, making it a warm and welcoming space for the children. Located in the heart of the Railway Colony campus, Akshaya School for Special Children has been a part of the Railway Colony community since 2000 and is recognised by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It currently supports 27 special children, helping them learn and grow in a safe and caring environment. The children are taught language skills in English and Tamil, along with basic maths and other essential skills. Their daily routine includes yoga, walking exercises, speech therapy, physiotherapy, life-skill training, and vocational activities, all aimed at helping them become more independent and confident, the statement added. A dedicated team of three teachers, three caretakers, and one physiotherapist work closely with the students, providing both academic support and emotional care.

Inhabitants of Sri Lankan Tamil camp at Moongiloorani urge authorities to expedite housing construction works
More than 190 Sri Lankan Tamil refugee families who were moved out of the rehabilitation centre at Moongiloorani in Sivaganga in 2023 for renovation of the houses, have urged the State government to expedite the construction works. Most of the Sri Lankan families had fled to India in 1990 and some in 2002, when the country faced an economic crisis, since then, they have been living in the housing complex at the rehabilitation centre in Sivaganga. In 2023, the district administration informed the residents to move out from the housing complex until renovation works were completed, said J. Parameswari, one of the inhabitants. Though the administration assured them that work would be completed in a year and they could then relocate to the houses, about 584, mostly widows and elders, relocated to rented houses in the nearby areas, she added. While few who could afford the rent shifted nearby, those who couldnot afford the rent the owners demanded, moved to far away locations where the rent was less, Ms. Parameswari noted. 'It is almost three years now and house owners have increased the rent by ₹1,000 and some even ₹2,000,' she added. Being a widow with a child, she said that she could afford to pay only ₹3,000, as her only source of income was from the tuition classes and ₹2,500 assistance given by the government. About 60 widows and 75 elders lived in the rehabilitation centre. 'Those who can work and earn money settle for even high rent houses, but for people like her, running a family and educating the child with mere income was very tight,' she added. At least if the houses were provided to them at the earliest; they could escape from the burden of rent, she said. 'Though officials say the works are almost complete, road laying works, roof installation, water connection, electricity connection, among others are still pending in the houses,' Ms. Parameswari said. Revenue officials said that the work was almost complete and once they get the sanction for other works, they would also be completed soon.
