Jinggoy confirms reso seeking retention of Chiz as Senate president
Estrada confirmed that there is a circulating resolution among senators to express support for Escudero as senate president. Of the 24 senators, he said 13 have already signed the resolution, calling it a 'super majority.'
'We have enough numbers—more than 13, I suppose. And I think Senate President Chiz Escudero is already secured of having his next term as Senate President,' Estrada told reporters in a phone interview.
The 20th Congress will begin its first regular session on July 28, shortly ahead of the fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.
Estrada acknowledged that anything can still happen until the 20th Congress begins, but he raised hope that the senators who already signed the resolution won't change their minds.
Asked if he's the one behind the circulation of the document, he said, 'Hindi naman, tulung tulong na 'yan (Not necessarily, everyone pitched in).'
Estrada also expressed hope that he will be retained as Senate President Pro Tempore, but explained that it's up to his colleagues to decide on the matter.
He also floated the possibility that Senator Joel Villanueva will be elected again as Senate majority leader.
Committee chairmanships
Estrada also said that newly elected senators are poised to lead big committees in the Senate.

'Ganon din si Senator Bam Aquino, ang kanyang advocacy, education. Siguro nararapat dapat natin ibigay 'yung committee on basic education sa kanya. Ganon din si Senator Kiko Pangilinan, ang forte niya agriculture. Siguro [siya] hahawak ng committee on agriculture,' he added.
(Same goes for Senator Bam Aquino who has an advocacy on education. Maybe we should give him the committee on basic education. Same with Senator Kiko Pangilinan who has a forte in agriculture. Maybe he should lead the committee on agriculture.)
He said first time Senator Rodante Marcoleta may also be the next chairman of the Senate committee on accountability of public officers and investigations, commonly known as the Blue Ribbon Committee.
Estrada further hinted that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian may next lead the Senate committee on finance, while Senator Mark Villar may chair the Senate committee on public works. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Senator Robin Padilla's draft Senate resolution calling for detained former president Rodrigo Duterte to be released from The Hague and returned to the Philippines has no weight, House members who are lawyers said Tuesday. Duterte was arrested on March 11 after arriving in Manila from a vacation in Hong Kong, pursuant to the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC)-issued arrest warrant over alleged crimes against humanity due to drug war killings during his presidency. He has been detained in Scheveningen prison in the Netherlands since March 14. Party-list Representatives Leila de Lima and Terry Ridon of ML and Bicol Saro, respectively, made the comments in light of the subject Resolution being pushed for by at least three Duterte's allies in the Senate: Padilla, Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa and Bong Go. 'Political posturing na lang 'yan kasi wala na ho sa kapangyarihan ng gobyerno natin na pabalikin siya [That is just political posturing because the Philippine government has no authority to bring him back here]. Kasi isang [Because an] international tribunal, which is the ICC, with competent jurisdiction over the alleged crimes, the crimes against humanity, at nakuha na nga siya kasi na-arresto nga siya legally, validly, ay nandun na sa kanila [which arrested him legally, validly, and is now in their custody],' de Lima, a former Justice Secretary and an ex-senator, told reporters. 'Hindi na nila [ICC] 'yan pakikinggan, kung ano man yung mga sasabihin na mga domestic authorities nila. They cannot grant [the goal of the Resolution]. (The ICC won't hear their plea because they cannot act on a mere resolution from local authorities. There is a process and in fact, Duterte's camp is already seeking an interim release.) De Lima then said that the resolution could also mislead Duterte's supporters into thinking that the former President remains under the jurisdiction of the Philippine government. 'Parang pinapalakas lang ang loob ng mga supporters na huwag kayo mag-alala, baka pwede pa natin maiuwi iyong dating Pangulo. But in my opinion, it won't fly because ICC has rules,' de Lima added. (They are just pandering to their supporters that there is still hope to bring the former President home, so they should not worry.) Ridon, who served as the chairperson of the Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor during the first year of the Duterte administration from 2016 to 2017, agreed with de Lima that the case of Duterte is something that is out of the Philippine government's hands. 'We have to be very frank na there's nothing that the Philippine government can do today to bring the former president back home. 44% of Pinoys believe Senate ‘deliberately' delaying VP Sara impeachment — SWS survey
A majority of Filipinos believe the Senate is 'deliberately' delaying the start of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. The non-commissioned survey showed that of 1,200 Filipino adults, 44% believe the upper chamber is delaying Duterte's impeachment proceedings. Meanwhile, 25% do not believe the Senate is delaying the impeachment trial, while 22% are undecided and 9% have no knowledge about the issue. 'The percentage of those who were undecided was highest in Mindanao (25%), followed by Balance Luzon (22%), the Visayas (21%), and Metro Manila (17%),' the SWS survey said. It also noted that most people who have insufficient knowledge about the issue were in the Visayas, with 13%. On the other hand, Metro Manila recorded the highest percentage of people aware of Duterte's impeachment, with 68%. The survey also reported that the majority of Filipinos disagree with the filing of the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte, obtaining 42% of the sampling. Those who agree comprise 32% while 18% said they were undecided and 7% said they do not know enough on the issue. The opposition was highest in Mindanao, with a net agreement score of -52, followed by the Visayas, with a net score of -18. Metro Manila garnered the highest agreement score of +12. 'In all areas, the percentage of those who were undecided ranged from 16% to 18%, while those who did not have enough knowledge about the matter ranged from 5% to 8%,' SWS said. The non-commissioned survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews from June 25-29, 2025. It has sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Senate impeachment court spokesperson Regie Tongol earlier said the Senate is not holding off Duterte's impeachment. 'Claims of foot-dragging are baseless as actions speak louder than words,' Tongol said. Duterte has entered a 'not guilty' plea in the verified impeachment complaint filed against her by the House of Representatives. The Vice President's impeachment complaint includes issues surrounding the use of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, and alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings in Davao City. The complaint also includes her 'assassination' remarks against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez. Meanwhile, the House under the 20th Congress has yet to submit the second certification concerning its willingness to prosecute. This came after the Senate sitting as an impeachment court voted to return to the House of Representatives the articles of impeachment against Duterte without dismissing or terminating them. Stop politicking? Sara Duterte tells Marcos: Look in the mirror
Vice President Sara Duterte said that it should be President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. who should stop politicking and serve the nation. Earlier in a recent vlog, Marcos told newly elected government officials who just assumed office that the elections are over so they should now focus their attention on public service. 'Tapos na po ang bahagi ng politika. Serbisyo (publiko) na ang haharapin ninyo ngayon.
