JD Vance Calls Out Zohran Mamdani's July 4 Post: 'Who The Hell Does He Think He Is?'

News183 days ago
US Vice President JD Vance took aim at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, criticizing the Democratic socialist's Independence Day message for lacking what he described as basic gratitude toward the United States. Speaking at the Claremont Institute's Statesmanship Award Dinner in San Diego, JD Vance marked the nation's 249th Independence Day by contrasting the significance of the holiday with Zohran Mamdani's comments.
'Today is July 5th, 2025, which means, as all of you know, that yesterday we celebrated the 249th anniversary of the birth of our nation," JD Vance said, adding, 'Now, the person who wishes to lead our largest city had, according to multiple media reports, never once publicly mentioned America's Independence Day in earnest. But when he did so this year, this is what he said, and this is an actual quote."

Trump suggests revoking Rosie O'Donnell's US citizenship after Texas flood criticism. Can he

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering revoking talk show host Rosie O'Donnell's American citizenship after she criticised his administration's response to the deadly floods in Texas. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote: 'Because of the fact that Rosie O'Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship.' He added: 'She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!' O'Donnell, who was born in New York, cannot legally have her citizenship revoked by the president. Under US law, a person born in the country cannot be stripped of their citizenship by the government. O'Donnell, who moved to Ireland earlier this year with her 12-year-old son, posted a TikTok video blaming Trump's budget cuts to weather and environmental agencies for worsening the effects of the Texas floods. 'What a horror story in Texas,' she said. 'And you know, when the president guts all the early warning systems and the weathering forecast abilities of the government, these are the results that we're gonna start to see on a daily basis.' In response, she posted two messages on Instagram, saying Trump attacks her because she 'stands in direct opposition with all he represents.' Trump and O'Donnell have publicly clashed for nearly 20 years, beginning in 2006 when O'Donnell, then a host on The View, mocked Trump's handling of a Miss USA pageant controversy. This is not the first time Trump has raised the idea of removing someone's citizenship. In the past, he has made similar remarks about US Olympic medallist Tamyra Mensah-Stock, NFL players who kneeled during the national anthem, and US Representative Ilhan Omar, suggesting they should 'go back' to other countries, despite being citizens. In 2019, he also targeted four Democratic congresswomen of colour known as 'The Squad' saying they should leave the US if they 'hate our country,' even though three were born in the US and all are American citizens. However, Trump has also hinted at revoking the citizenship of Elon Musk and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Trump expressed anger at Musk for criticising the newly passed 'Big Beautiful Bill,' which reduces electric vehicle tax credits that impact Musk's companies. Mamdani, meanwhile, has faced accusations from conservative lawmakers of holding extremist views. While both Musk and Mamdani are naturalised US citizens, legal experts point out that under current US law, the president cannot unilaterally revoke anyone's citizenship, whether natural-born or naturalised. On Friday, Trump visited Texas and defended his government's actions during the floods. 'My agencies did an incredible job under the circumstances,' he said, according to Reuters. The floods struck on July 4 during the early morning hours and killed at least 120 people, including many children. Officials at both state and federal levels are facing questions over whether enough was done to warn and protect residents. (With inputs from agencies)

Trump organisation plans to build tower block in Romanian capital

The Trump Organization - U.S. President Donald Trump's family business - will team up with Romanian real estate developer SDC Imobiliare to build a tower block with luxury apartments in the capital Bucharest, the companies said. Trump Tower Bucharest will be developed in the heart of Romania's capital(Bloomberg) "Trump Tower Bucharest will be developed in the heart of Romania's capital, one of Europe's most vibrant and dynamic emerging markets, bringing premium residences under the Trump brand to the region," the companies said in a statement. They did not specify the location or start date for work on the tower block, which is being branded as luxury residential apartments in Romania, the region's second-biggest economy. Romania's economy stalled in the first quarter amid a drawn-out political crisis and worries about a potential downturn, underperforming most of its peers in central and eastern Europe. Romania, a European Union and NATO member state, has found itself at the centre of a dispute between Europe and the Trump administration over democratic principles after the constitutional court in December cancelled an ongoing presidential vote due to suspicions of Russian meddling, denied by Moscow. U.S. Vice President JD Vance has said Romania's decision to cancel the election in which a far-right, pro-Russian candidate was the frontrunner based on what he called "flimsy evidence" meant Bucharest did not share American values. The country re-ran its presidential ballot in May and centrist President Nicusor Dan won, with Trump later congratulating him on his victory.

Zohran Mamdani's Call To End Police Response To Domestic Violence In 2020 Podcast Resurfaces

An old podcast video in which New York Democratic mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani said the New York Police Department (NYPD) should not respond to domestic violence incidents has resurfaced. He, instead, suggested that people trained to deal with such specific situations be in charge. The 33-year-old made the remarks during an episode of the Immigrantly podcast in July 2020, shortly after the killing of George Floyd. 'If somebody is jaywalking, if somebody is surviving, going through domestic violence, there are so many different, different situations that would be far better handled by people trained to deal with those specific situations, as opposed to an individual with a gun,' Mamdani said during the podcast. Citing concerns of 'escalation,' Mamdani questioned the efficacy and appropriateness of involving armed law enforcement in situations of domestic abuse. The NYPD recorded more than 110,000 domestic violence cases in New York City in 2024 alone, highlighting the scale and severity of the issue. The podcast appearance was reportedly recorded at a time when public discourse around police reform was at its peak, and Mamdani aligned himself with many progressive voices in calling for a reimagining of public safety infrastructure. On the same podcast, he said, 'We find so many people who are having a mental breakdown, or people who are just trying to sleep on the train, or people who are just suffering through something in their lives. And instead of receiving a helping hand, they were shot, they were Tased, they were killed.' Mamdani, who was elected to the New York State Assembly later in 2020, has centred his current mayoral bid around transformative changes to public safety. Central to his campaign is a pledge to create a new Department of Community Safety, with a proposed $1 billion budget, to respond to mental health and other crises traditionally managed by police officers. His policy brief outlines a shift towards 'crisis responders' in such cases, although it stops short of defining the scenarios that fall under this new agency's jurisdiction. Mamdani's campaign has also not offered clarification on whether domestic violence incidents will be excluded from police purview under his proposed system. During the same Immigrantly episode, Mamdani criticised what he described as the NYPD's militarised presence in minority communities. He characterised their presence as akin to an 'occupying force' and expressed full support for the movement to defund the police, which gained significant momentum within segments of the Democratic Party during the summer of 2020. The emergence of Mamdani's 2020 comments comes just weeks after he secured a thumping victory in a crowded Democratic mayoral race, positioning him as a prominent contender in the upcoming election.
