The iPhone setting that stops annoying scam calls

Yahoo14-07-2025
When an unknown number rings on a phone screen in Britain, the probability that it's a spam or scam call is more than a third, according to call-blocking firm Hiya.
Some 31% of calls not from someone in a personal contact list are identified as nuisance calls, with an additional 4% being fraudsters, according to anti-spam company Hiya's Global Call Threat report 2025.
The most common form of scams are those impersonating HMRC, although others such as crypto investment or Amazon scams are also widespread, Hiya statistics show.
Last week, for example, people were warned to be on high alert for scams linked to winter fuel payments after HMRC received 15,100 reports of bogus activity in June. It said it has had to remove 4,600 fake websites linked to the payments.
Amazon shoppers were also warned about sophisticated AI scams using automated calls to target bargain-hunters during Prime Day.
So, if you're constantly being hassled by scammers, there's a hidden iPhone setting that can make life easier.
You can opt to send all unknown and spam callers direct to voicemail, and also opt to silence all unknown callers.
This has the effect of making scam callers hang up as they usually want to speak to users direct.
Users can also quickly check iPhone's voicemail-to-text for any messages from legitimate callers.
To send all unknown callers to voicemail, go to the main iPhone 'Settings' app.
Then select Apps > Phone.
Then choose Silence Unknown Callers – this means that anyone who calls bar people in your contacts list, people you have recently called, and numbers which have popped up in the AI-powered Siri Suggestions will go directly to voice mail.
You will not hear or be notified about the call, but can go to Visual Voicemail to read messages from callers you may have missed.
You will not see a notification, but any missed calls will still be recorded in your missed calls.
There are various ways Android users can screen calls, although these vary by device.
Go to Settings > Caller ID and spam.
You can then select Filter spam calls or Block spam calls.
As with the iPhone, you'll be able to see any missed calls in your call history.
On Samsung devices, select Phone > Settings > Caller ID and spam protection to activate their blocking service, powered by Hiya.
Some UK phone carriers also have opt-in services to automatically block spam and scam callers – call your carrier or check their website to see if they offer this service.

7 major AI updates this week — including one that could change search forever

AI moves fast and this past week, it felt like it hit the gas. Between major upgrades from Google and Microsoft, new tools from OpenAI, and a buzzy Amazon-backed launch, there's been no shortage of AI news and breakthrough features. Whether you're trying to learn faster, protect your privacy or star in your own TV show, here are the biggest AI headlines you might've missed and what these latest updates mean for you. Gemini's new mode called Deep Think is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of rushing to deliver an answer, Deep Think gives Gemini more 'thinking time,' letting it run a parallel process to brainstorm, refine and settle on a better response. The result is smarter, more reasoned answers that feel surprisingly human. If you're looking to try it, you'll have to sign up as an Ultra subscriber. However, based on past rollouts, don't be surprised if Google eventually makes it free. Google's AI Overviews now let you upload entire files like PDFs or images and ask questions about them directly. It's a time saver when you need to summarize a large document or, if you need to scan that document, you can do that, too. Just upload it in the chat and Google will take care of the rest. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Combined with the new follow-up feature, Google is turning search into something closer to a true AI assistant (and more than just a results page). Another big update from Google. NotebookLM can now generate Video Overviews, narrated, slide-style summaries of your documents complete with quotes, diagrams and data pulled directly from your files. You can also create multiple versions of audio, video or visual outputs in the same notebook and mix formats (like listening to a summary while viewing a mind map). It's a big step toward making research more interactive. This week, users discovered that shared ChatGPT chats were surfacing in Google search results, even ones with sensitive or private information. OpenAI quickly disabled the "Make public" toggle that enabled sharing, and it's now working with search engines to de-index exposed chats. If you've ever shared a conversation link, it might be worth double-checking your settings and deleting anything you don't want out in the wild (aka the internet). Your Edge browser is now a full-blown AI assistant. Microsoft rolled out Copilot Mode, a smart sidebar that adapts to whatever you're doing online. For example, if you're reading an article, Copilot Mode can take over and summarize it. If you're writing an email, the AI will suggest improvements. And if you're shopping online, it can compare products in real time. It's one of the most proactive AI upgrades we've seen from Microsoft yet. Need help studying? ChatGPT's new Study Mode turns the chatbot into a personalized tutor. Students of all levels and skill levels can take advantage of this AI-powered opportunity to learn more efficiently. All you do is choose your subject, set your level and decide how you want to learn; via flashcards, concept breakdowns, practice problems or Q&A. Whether you're prepping for a test or just brushing up, this free feature is worth a try. A new capability inside ChatGPT is Agent mode. Unlike a typical chatbot, the Agent can actually do things for you like browse the web, organize files or run multi-step tasks such as creating and emailing a report. When I put Agent Mode to the test, I discovered the AI could juggle real-world assignments with surprising ease, though it still needs some hand-holding. I don't trust it completely yet, but it will be interesting to see how it evolves. A new Amazon-backed startup called Showrunner is making waves by offering what it calls the 'Netflix of AI.' Using just a short prompt, you can generate an entire animated TV episode and even insert yourself into the story. It uses AI to script, voice, and animate everything. As an early member, I have tried the AI tools and was impressed by how easy it is to use. Plus, the opportunity to see what the community of Showrunner users has created helps to spark new ideas. From smarter search and study tools to evolving AI privacy issues, this week proves just how fast the AI landscape is changing. Tech giants like Google, Microsoft and OpenAI continue to push the boundaries of what AI can do while new players like Showrunner hint at where things might be headed next. If you blink, you might miss something big. But don't worry we'll be here every week to break it down. Want to stay ahead? XRP Crypto Powers Ahead in Global Payments — HashJ Introduces Participation Contracts for 2025 Users

London, United Kingdom, Aug. 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MGPD Finance Limited, doing business as HashJ, today announced the official rollout of its XRP participation contracts, offering users a simplified way to engage with one of the most established digital assets in global payments. This launch comes as XRP continues to demonstrate resilience and institutional appeal, buoyed by legal clarity and renewed adoption across financial sectors. At the time of publication, XRP is trading at approximately $2.74, with a market capitalization near $40 billion, according to CoinMarketCap. The asset remains within the top 10 globally by valuation. Recent developments, including a U.S. court ruling confirming that XRP is not a security when traded on exchanges, have reinforced confidence among both retail and institutional participants. HashJ's participation contracts aim to make engagement with XRP more accessible by providing short-term, fixed-return instruments that eliminate the need for technical management or high-risk trading exposure. How HashJ is Expanding Digital Asset Participation Through Simplified Contracts HashJ's XRP participation contracts mark the latest addition to its growing portfolio of structured digital asset instruments designed for mainstream users. Built for accessibility, these short-term contracts allow individuals to engage with XRP-linked performance without navigating complex trading platforms or managing technical infrastructure. Available via HashJ's mobile-based interface, each contract offers a defined term and a fixed reward structure. Participants can select from multiple durations—starting at just a few days—while benefiting from a straightforward entry process that does not require advanced financial knowledge or experience in digital asset markets. HashJ's User-Centered Design for Broader Engagement The launch reflects HashJ's commitment to creating inclusive financial tools that reduce barriers to entry. By eliminating price speculation mechanics and minimizing the decision-making overhead often associated with digital asset investing, the participation model appeals to a broad demographic of users—including those new to the space. As with its earlier BTC, DOGE, and ETH-based contracts, HashJ's XRP contracts are designed to respond to market movement while offering a predictable outcome over a fixed duration. This approach has attracted over 2 million users across more than 90 countries, many of whom cite ease of use and risk clarity as key differentiators. Welcoming First-Time Users with Platform Credits To support adoption of the XRP contract line, HashJ is offering new users a welcome package valued at $118, comprising $100 in contract trial credits and $18 in platform incentive provides first-time users an opportunity to engage with the platform at no upfront cost, and to experience the structure and flow of short-term participation firsthand. Product Expansion and Global Reach HashJ's addition of XRP contracts follows growing interest from users in Asia, Latin America, and parts of Europe, where simplified tools for accessing high-cap digital assets have seen increased demand. The platform's infrastructure is built for mobile environments and supports fast, secure, and transparent participation without requiring traditional account funding mechanisms. By enabling users to align with major asset movements through structured contracts, HashJ aims to help more individuals participate in the digital asset economy—on their own terms and timelines. Virgin Media O2 to resume switch off tomorrow leaving these phones with no internet

Virgin Media O2 is set to continue its 3G switch tomorrow (August 4), which could leave some customers unable to use mobile data. The UK's major mobile providers, including EE, Vodafone and Three, have gradually been shutting off all 3G services over the past few years following an agreement with the Government back in 2021. Virgin Media O2 is the latest provider to switch off its 3G network so it can focus on "faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient" 4G and 5G networks. Its 3G network switch off began on April 2, with the city of Durham the first area affected. It continued in July, with Virgin Media O2 switching off 3G services in: Norwich Telford Guildford Next area impacted by Virgin Media O2's 3G switch off Torquay will be the next area affected by Virgin Media O2's 3G switch off, with the service set to be shut off on Monday (August 4). The rest of the UK is set to follow by the end of the year, Virgin Media O2's Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, said. She added: 'We're switching off our 3G network to focus our attention and investment on upgrading faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks that will give our customers a better overall experience. 'Following the successful pilot in Durham earlier this year, we will be switching off 3G in Norwich, Telford and Guildford in July, and Torquay in early August, with the rest of the UK to follow by the end of the year." The switch-off is also set to impact other mobile providers which use Virgin Media O2's network, including: Giffgaff Sky Mobile Tesco Mobile Virgin Media O2's 3G switch off is set to continue in August. (Image: Shutterstock/Virgin Media O2) "You'll struggle to do even the basics" - Virgin Media O2 customers with 3G devices issued upgrade warning Virgin Media O2 customers still using 3G devices or sims, have been warned to upgrade to a 4G or 5G device before the switch off takes place in their area. Any customers who don't upgrade to a 4G or 5G device before 3G is switched off in their area will still be able to make voice calls and send text messages, but will be unable to use mobile data. Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert (MSE) explained: "If you have a phone or Sim that only supports 3G, you'll effectively no longer be able to use the internet once it's fully switched off by your provider. "You'll still technically be able to connect to the internet, but you'll struggle to do even basic tasks. "You'll still be able to make calls and send text messages over 2G, though the quality of the call will likely be a lot worse than it was on the 3G network." Who is Martin Lewis? Virgin Media O2 said the "vast majority" of its customers already have a 4G or 5G device and will not have to take action as a result of the switch-off. Known vulnerable customers still using 3G devices have already been offered a 4G-ready device free of charge. Virgin Media O2 is also working with Age UK to distribute content designed for older people and their families to help them better understand the 3G switch-off. All other customers who don't currently have a 4G handset or SIM will be offered a new device at a reduced price. Customers with unwanted handsets are urged to recycle their devices through O2 Recycle, which could see them receive cash for their unwanted phone. Devices affected by Virgin Media O2's 3G switch off If you are unsure whether or not your device will lose mobile data access when Virgin Media O2's 3G network is switched off, don't worry, there is a way to check. Visit the Virgin Media O2 website and look at its list of devices that are not compatible with 4G and WiFi Calling. If your phone/sim is on that list, you will be impacted by the switch-off and will need to change devices before it happens.
