Surrey boost title ambitions after taking back control at Durham
Leaders Surrey boosted their Division One title ambitions by taking a grip on their contest with Durham at Chester-le-Street. Surrey, resuming on 182 for five after bowling Durham out for 153 on the opening day, made 322 with Dan Lawrence and Jordan Clark leading the way with 88 and 82 respectively. Durham reached 222 for five at the close – a lead of 53 – with firm resistance from Emilio Gay, who fell one short of a century on 99. Colin Ackermann went for 43 just before the close as Sai Kahore's two wickets gave Surrey hope of a fourth victory of the season. Second-placed Nottinghamshire's hopes of staying in touch with the leaders were boosted by skipper Haseeb Hameed's century at Trent Bridge. Responding to Somerset's 438 all out, Hameed made his third hundred of the season with his unbeaten 103 from 179 balls taking him past the 1,000 run mark this summer. Freddie McCann chipped in with 48 and Joe Clarke was undefeated on 26 as Nottinghamshire closed on 189 for two. Essex made a massive 602 for six against Warwickshire with bowlers short of joy on a batting-friendly pitch at Chelmsford. Centuries from Charlie Allison (133) and Michael Pepper (107 not out) added to Tom Westley's 148. Warwickshire also made hay with the bat to close on 140 for two as skipper Alex Davies made 58, with Dan Mousley unbeaten on 54. Yorkshire established a first-innings lead over Sussex at Scarborough after bowling out the visitors for 222. Jack White was the pick of the bowlers with three for 25 from 19 overs as the wickets were shared around. Adam Lyth (115 from 233 balls) and James Wharton (85 from 130) shared a 168-run partnership for the third wicket, and Yorkshire will resume play on day three 292 for four – a lead of 70. Worcestershire are 106 runs adrift of Hampshire at the halfway stage with eight first-innings wickets left at New Road. The visitors were dismissed for 293 after Tom Prest's 54 and it looked an unsatisfactory score after the hosts reached 187 for two. Leaders Leicestershire reached 471 against Kent thanks to an incredible last-wicket stand of 108 between Tom Scriven and Josh Hull. Scriven made a career-best 99 as the Foxes secured maximum batting bonus points at Canterbury. Matt Parkinson took seven for 137 to record his best first-class for Kent and the hosts closed on 203 for three as Ben Compton made an unbeaten 101. New Zealand batter Kane Williamson scored 153 to steer Middlesex to 445 at Cheltenham, with Gloucestershire 54 for one in reply. Martin Andersson was Derbyshire's mainstay with 105 in their 377 against Northamptonshire. After slipping to 154 for five, George Bartlett (60 not out) and Justin Broad (64 not out) coaxed Northamptonshire to 265 for five, 112 adrift.

Henry grabs six wickets as New Zealand shatter Zimbabwe
Fast bowler Matt Henry has finished with figures of 6-39 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 149 in their first Test match against New Zealand in almost nine years. Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine, who won the toss, wanted his top-order batters to put runs on the board but instead the home team were dismissed inside two-and-a-half sessions on the opening day for their second-lowest innings total this year. New Zealand were 0-92 when stumps were drawn in Bulawayo, with Devon Conway unbeaten on 51 after completing his 12th Test half century and Will Young also looking solid on 41 not out. The return of Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza in the longer format of the game did not help against the incisive bowling of Henry as he consistently challenged the batters with his intriguing line and lengths. But on Wednesday New Zealand missed two catching opportunities when top scorer Ervine (39) and Tafadzwa Tsiga (30) both got dropped early in their innings. Despite getting second chances, both batters struggled during the 54-run partnership against the immaculate Henry and Nathan Smith (3-20), with third seamer Will O'Rourke also going for just two runs an over in his 13 overs. Mitchell Santner, captaining the Black Caps for the first time in the absence of injured Tom Latham, hoped his three fast bowlers would get the most out of a soft pitch after he lost the toss and was asked to field first. And Henry didn't disappoint. He got the outside edges of Bennett (6) and Curran (13) during his impressive opening spell of seven overs. He then found the outside edge of Nick Welch (27) at the stroke of lunch to leave Zimbabwe rocking at 4-67. Smith had reduced Zimbabwe to 3-31 when in-form Sean Williams (2) chopped a short ball back onto his stumps. Raza lasted for only two runs in his return to the longer format as he fell soon after lunch when he tried to fend Henry's sharp short ball and lobbed an easy catch to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. Henry polished off the tail quickly as Santner pounced on a diving catch and held on to a leading edge of Blessing Muzarabbani after Newman Nyamhuri had been caught by Young.

English cricket chiefs confirm sale of six Hundred franchises
Six teams in English cricket's controversial Hundred competition have now been sold to private investors, with deals for the Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets still to be formally completed, officials announced Wednesday. The England and Wales Cricket Board expect a windfall of nearly £1 billion ($1.32 billion) from an auction of Hundred franchises, with the fifth edition of the 100 balls per side tournament due to start next week. Global investors, including four groups with links to the cash-rich Indian Premier League, have sunk vast sums of money into the competition's eight city-based teams. The 100-balls-a-side format, which features men's and women's sides, was launched to great fanfare in 2021. It has proved controversial, with many county cricket fans angry at the way the tournament deprives their clubs of key players at the height of the season. The Hundred has also squeezed a marquee five-match Test series such as England's ongoing clash with India into a congested seven-week schedule so it can have much of August to itself. But the ECB is confident that £520 million of new investment will eventually work its way into the game following a franchise auction earlier this year. The ECB confirmed Wednesday the sale of stakes in six teams has now been completed, but the 49 percent share of Oval Invincibles to Reliance Group, the creation of the wealthy Mumbai-based Ambani family, the owners of the IPL's Mumbai Indians -- has still to be finalised. And the joint takeover of the Trent Rockets by Cain International and Ares Management has yet to be completed as well, although the ECB said Wednesday that both deals "remain on track". But purchases for London Spirit, Birmingham Phoenix, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Southern Brave and Welsh Fire have now been completed. "The Hundred has already played a vital role in growing cricket in England and Wales —- attracting new audiences, elevating the women's game and delivering high-quality entertainment," ECB chairman Richard Thompson said Wednesday. He added: "Crucially, this investment will not only fuel the competition's growth, but also channel transformative levels of funding into our professional counties and grassroots game." Three IPL ownership groups, out of a proposed four, have completed their takeovers, with the Sun Group taking full acquisition of Northern Superchargers. jdg/ea
