Memphis area to be under heat advisory. What to know about forecast, heat exhaustion
More than 700 people die from extreme heat every year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The elderly, the very young and people with chronic diseases, especially chronic respiratory diseases, are especially at risk for heat stroke, Dr. Jeff Mullins, a physician with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, previously told The Commercial Appeal. But anyone can have a heat-related injury during periods of sustained high temperatures.
Here's what you need to know as extreme heat hits the region.
How can I stay safe in the heat?
One of the best things you can do to avoid heat stroke is 'simply not be out in the sun in the middle of the day,' Mullins said. He also recommended doing any yard work when it's cloudy or when the sun is going down to avoid direct sunlight.
Additionally, Mullins recommended hydrating far in advance of any outdoor activities. For example, if you're planning on doing yard work on the weekend, make sure you're hydrating on Friday night.
The NWS recommended taking frequent breaks in the shade, wearing lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Mullins advised taking a break in the shade for every hour you're outside. He cautioned against taking breaks indoors ― cooling off indoors puts stress on your body to reacclimate to the heat when you go back outdoors.
It's also helpful to drink electrolytes, he said. He recommended alternating a drink like Pedialyte for every bottle of water. If Gatorade is your electrolyte of choice, you should drink it every third bottle, because its high sugar content can be dehydrating, Mullins said.
How hot is too hot to be outside?
A healthy adult should delay outdoor activities if the heat index breaks 110, Mullins said. It could take a healthy person a few hours to become dehydrated, but for children or the elderly, it can be as short as 30 minutes, he said.
Heat index is not the same as temperature ― it's calculated with both temperature and humidity. More water vapor in the air causes more heat to be transferred to your body, he said.
Mullins recommended using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Heat and Health tracker, an online tool that allows you to enter your zip code and see your heat risk.
The NWS also warned never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles during high heat.
What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?
The most common heat-related injuries are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion occurs when a person has been exposed to too much heat and is dehydrated. Heat exhaustion is not necessarily a crisis, Mullins said, but it can trigger other health issues like a heart attack or a stroke.
However, heat stroke is a medical emergency. The treatment is ice, hydration and rest, Mullins said.
It's important to watch for the warning signs of heat injuries. Lightheadedness is probably one of the first things a young person will notice. If you feel lightheaded after bending down, it's time to take a break, he said.
Dry skin, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures and high body temperatures are also symptoms of heat stroke, according to the CDC.
'If you find someone that has passed out in the heat…you need to assume heat stroke,' Mullins said. 'Don't worry about whether they look like they're sweating or not, or how they feel when they wake up. If they've passed out, that's a 911 to the emergency room.'

Luxury cruise vacation becomes disaster as mystery illness strikes numerous passengers
A luxury cruise turned into a floating disaster when over 140 passengers became ill on a Royal Caribbean voyage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 134 of 3,914 passengers and seven crew members aboard the Navigator of the Seas reported symptoms such as vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea during a voyage that concluded July 11. 'The health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we visit are our top priority,' the spokesperson said in a statement. 'To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.' This incident is one of 18 gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships in 2025 that met the CDC's threshold for public notification, with most linked to norovirus. The same number of outbreaks was reported in 2024, while 14 were recorded in 2023. This is not the first time illness has struck a Royal Caribbean cruise. In February, more than 90 people experienced gastrointestinal illness symptoms aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship returning to Tampa, Florida. 'Norovirus is often a cause of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships, but we don't always know the cause of the outbreak when we begin an investigation. Finding the agent that caused an outbreak (causative agent) can take time,' the CDC said in a statement. Although cruise ships are commonly associated with such outbreaks, the CDC said they account for only 1% of all reported cases.

Why are tick bites sending so many people to the emergency room this summer?
While working as a youth camp doctor in upstate New York earlier this summer, Dr. Matt Harris noticed he was removing a dozen ticks from campers each day, more than in years prior. Harris, an emergency medicine doctor at Northwell Medicine, said summer camp isn't the only place seeing a surge of tick bites: He and other doctors have been seeing more people coming into the ER because of ticks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this July has seen more ER visits for tick bites so far than the past eight Julys. Tick-related hospital visits typically peak in May. This May, tick bites accounted for 134 out of every 100,000 ER visits, the highest level since 2019, the CDC says. Rates were highest in the Northeast and the Midwest. Harris and other doctors said this rise in ER visits may be due to increased awareness about ticks. 'I think because there's so much out there in the media about this, people are coming in before they get engorged,' Harris said. 'So they're coming in when the tick is small.' Thomas Mather, an entomologist at the University of Rhode Island who researches ticks, attributed the trend to the migration of ticks to more heavily populated areas. Warmer temperatures and more intense humidity mean that ticks are found in a wider geographic area and tick season lasts longer. Tick bites tend to happen more in the spring, summer and fall, when people are outdoors. May and June are the most troublesome months, Mather said. Although everyone is susceptible to tick bites, small children account for the greatest proportion of ER visits. Mather and Harris both said this is because kids are more likely to be in outdoor environments where ticks are present. What diseases do ticks cause? Different species of ticks carry different diseases. The most common tick-borne illness is Lyme disease, Mather said. The infection — which can cause a bull's-eye rash — is spread by the black-legged deer tick and caused by Borrelia bacteria. Nearly half a million people are diagnosed or treated for Lyme disease each year, according to the CDC. Other diseases spread by ticks include the heartland virus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Not all tick bites result in infections. The longer a tick stays latched to skin, the higher chance that harmful bacteria can lead to infection, said Dr. Daniel Solomon, an infectious disease doctor at Brigham and Woman's Hospital in Boston. But doctors say that people are often seeking care because of the tick itself, not because of any symptoms of illness. Dr. Meredith Porter, medical director at Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care in Virginia, said she commonly sees patients without any symptoms come in with the tick still attached. 'That's why going to get the tick off early on with recognition is important,' Harris said. 'It's not a 2 o'clock in the morning emergency, but it's within the next couple of hours.' What to do if you get a tick bite Symptoms vary depending on the type of tick, but markers for many tick-borne illnesses include flu-like symptoms like a fever and body aches. These symptoms can take several days to weeks to manifest. Solomon said that for people without symptoms, a trip to the emergency room is not necessary. Visiting urgent care or even a simple phone call to a doctor will suffice, he said. 'This is not a 911 emergency — we should be really clear,' Harris said. 'Do not call the ambulance for this.' To prevent tick bites, use bug spray and wear long pants and long sleeves, especially in grassy or wooded areas. After spending time in an area where ticks are found, people should do a self-check for any ticks attached to their skin. Ticks should be removed as soon as possible. Porter recommends using tweezers to gently grasp the tick close to the skin. Harris said to avoid squeezing the tick tightly during removal, because it may increase the risk of infection. These moms of quadruplets have found a way to stay sane
This trip couldn't have come at a worse – or maybe better – time for Raquel Torres. The 35-year-old from Tampa, Florida, delivered her quadruplets at 26 weeks and spent four agonizing months watching them in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as they underwent surgery, breathing and feeding complications. She was 'drowning in depression' and sought support from an exclusive Facebook group of quadruplet moms, who were planning a trip to Nashville in August 2023. Five days before the trip, Torres' last quadruplet came home happy and healthy. It was her sign to finally take some time for herself. 'It's hard because as mothers, we just deep dive into motherhood and we forget we have needs as well,' Torres said. 'I had poured so much into my kids. It was time for me to also take care of myself.' This first trip turned into an annual tradition among the quadruplet moms who found each other on Facebook and instantly bonded over the hardships of having high-order multiples. It has also captivated the interest of social media users, with a video from a June trip to Utah receiving over 750,000 views on TikTok. Quadruplet pregnancies and births are extremely rare. There were only 128 quadruplet births in 2023 compared to 110,000 twin births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Artificial reproductive technology and older age can increase the risk of having quadruplets, said Dr. Layan Alrahmani, OB-GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist, and advisory board member for BabyCenter, a digital parenting resource. 'With fertility treatment, now we're very careful and it's very rare to implant more than one embryo,' she said. Quadruplet and other higher-order pregnancies are unique in that they increase the risk of certain complications such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and postpartum hemorrhage, Alrahmani said. Quadruplet babies are also at increased risk of learning disabilities, developmental delays and premature birth, Alrahmani said, with most deliveries occurring between 30 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Some doctors may recommend that patients get a fetal reduction to decrease the risk of complications. Due to the high-risk nature of the pregnancy, medical visits are frequent and "so intense" because "we're asking about bad things and it's a lot," Alrahmani said, who does not have quadruplets. It can suck the joy and excitement out of pregnancy. The quadruplet moms say there's no one around who can relate to their parenting experiences, which is what inspired Hanna Castle, 25, to start organizing the trips. 'These trips are one big mom-sleepover that makes us feel like teenagers, again,' said Castle, a mom of 3-year-old quadruplets from Columbus, Ohio. "It's become a true friendship." She first learned about the exclusive Facebook group after posting a video of her ultrasound on social media. Another quadruplet mom began following her and then invited her to the Facebook group, which can't be found with a normal search. Before being added as a member, Castle had to provide proof that she was having quadruplets. The secrecy of the group is "super important," Castle said. "Having such a high-risk pregnancy that's rare, that nobody understands, you can be extra sensitive and want to be private with a lot of things." Since finding the group, she has leaned on her fellow moms as she navigated pregnancy, the NICU and motherhood. She spearheaded the first trip to Nashville and has also organized trips to Florida and Utah. The moms hit up bars, go to the beach, take hikes and some have even gotten matching tattoos. Castle tries to rotate the trip's location and times of the year to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to attend. Torres and Castle look forward to the annual gathering each year. 'It's a time to really disconnect as much as you can and get a feeling like you're back to yourself for a moment while also getting the support and advice you need to go back and be the best mom you can,' Castle said.
