
Wittner, iconic Australian fashion brand, goes into administration
Wittner Group Holdings, along with its trading arms Wittner Retail Australia and Wittner Retail New Zealand, has appointed Deloitte administrators Sal Algeri and David Orr to oversee a sale or recapitalisation of the business. The brand, once hailed as Australia's first mail-order footwear company, will continue to trade as usual during the process.
Established by HJ Wittner, the company had enjoyed a strong reputation and steady profitability in recent years, leading to its acquisition by British firm Hilco Capital, which also owns Cue Clothing. However, like many Australian retailers, Wittner has been unable to withstand the economic pressures of 2025.
'Growth in sales has been eroded by cost pressures from rising wages and occupancy costs, and more recently challenging trading conditions and supply-chain disruptions,' Wittner management said in a statement.
Despite efforts to boost revenue through online channels and expanded concessions in department stores like Myer and David Jones, the brand's profitability was undermined by surging labour and utility costs.
Administrator Sal Algeri acknowledged the shock for employees and customers: 'We understand the appointment of administrators will be particularly concerning to Wittner's employees, as well as the very loyal customer base it has built over decades.'
He added that operations would continue while Deloitte undertakes an urgent review and invites offers from potential buyers.
Wittner currently operates more than 20 standalone stores across Australia and New Zealand, in addition to 25 concessions in major retailers. Its products are also sold online via platforms including The Iconic.
Wittner's collapse is the latest in a string of retail shutdowns, with Mosaic Brands recently announcing the closure of Millers and Noni B — impacting 900 jobs — and Jeanswest closing more than 90 stores nationwide.
Wittner's directors said they would work closely with administrators to 'achieve the best outcome for the business and its stakeholders.

India's GlaxoSmithKline Pharma posts first revenue drop in over two years
Indian drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Pharma reported its first quarterly revenue decline in more than two years on Friday, leading to its shares declining the most in nearly four months. Its quarterly profit climbed 12.5% on-year to 2.05 billion rupees as the company kept a tight lid on its expenses. Total expenses for the quarter dropped 5.2%.

OpenAI to launch first European AI data centre in Norway
OpenAI revealed plans on Thursday to establish its first AI data centre in Europe, located in Norway. The project, named Stargate Norway, will be a joint venture with British AI cloud provider Nscale and Norwegian energy firm Aker. The data centre, announced through a press release, is set to be built in a partnership, where Nscale will handle the design and construction of the site, with OpenAI serving as an "off-taker," purchasing capacity from the centre. UK house prices rise modestly in July, affordability improves, Nationwide says
LONDON: British house prices rose slightly faster than expected in July, but less than earlier in 2025 when the looming expiry of a tax break accelerated sales, while higher wages were improving affordability, mortgage lender Nationwide said on Friday. House prices in July rose by 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted basis, taking the average to 272,664 pounds ($360,080), after a 0.9% drop in June, raising the annual rate of growth to 2.4% from 2.1%, the figures from Nationwide Building Society showed. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 0.3% monthly rise and a 2.1% annual increase for July. China property investment falls 10.7% yr/yr in January-May Annual price rises are down from a peak of 4.7% in December and Nationwide said demand had stabilised after the end in April of an exemption from stamp duty land tax on many lower-value house purchases. 'After deteriorating markedly in the wake of the pandemic, housing affordability has been steadily improving thanks to a period of strong income growth alongside more subdued house price growth and a modest fallback in mortgage rates,' Nationwide Chief Economist Robert Gardner said. The Bank of England is widely expected to cut its main interest rate to 4% from 4.25% on August 7 but economists are unsure how many further rate cuts are likely as inflation has picked up to close to double the BoE's 2% target. Nationwide said the interest rate on a typical five-year fixed-rate mortgage with a 25% deposit had fallen to 4.3% from a peak of around 5.7% in late 2023. Last month the BoE relaxed restrictions on high loan-to-income mortgages.
