Melaka Customs foils smuggling of imported rice, ciggies, liquor worth over RM6mil
Its director, Nadzri Che Ani said his department seized 28 containers holding 623,000kg of rice, estimated to be worth RM5.23mil including tax duty, at Port Klang, Selangor on Jan 20 and Feb 6.
"A check on Customs Form 1 found that the goods were declared as 'sodium chloride' (salt) and the inspection found that each container held a total of 70 sacks of white powder (salt) and 445 sacks of rice.
"The sacks containing rice were fraudulently hidden at the back and the sacks of salt were placed at the front of the container door," he said at a press conference here on Friday (June 13).
Elaborating further, Nadzri said that the goods were likely imported from India for the local market and the owner of the importer company and shipping agent were detained for further investigation.
He stated that rice is classified as a prohibited item under Item 25, Third Schedule/Part 1 of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023 and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.
Meanwhile, he said the department also seized liquor, worth RM499,621 including duty, in raids at two locations on March 7 and April 11 in Johor Baru.
"In the operation, a total of 8,585 litres of liquor were seized from three multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs). A physical inspection of the seized goods showed that the liquor had a 'Malaysian Duty Not Paid' status and was an abuse of the exemption given in the (Forest City) duty-free island area," he said.
Meanwhile, Nadzri said his party also seized a total of 1.1 million cigarettes, worth RM822,800 including duties, in Muar, Johor on April 5, which were stored in an unoccupied warehouse in a durian orchard.
He said the offences in all three cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
"We also call on the public to cooperate by providing information regarding any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs toll-free line number at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs office in all states," he said.- Bernama

Israeli airstrikes kill 44 in Gaza, targeting displaced civilians and aid seekers
GAZA CITY: Israeli airstrikes on Friday killed at least 44 Palestinians and wounded dozens more, with attacks focusing on schools sheltering displaced families, tents, and civilians waiting for humanitarian aid, according to medical sources and witnesses. Among the deadliest strikes was one on Al-Qahira School in Gaza City, where thousands of displaced civilians had taken refuge. Medical sources confirmed five fatalities, including a child, with 10 others injured. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as families fled the area, with one child arriving at Al-Shifa Hospital with an amputated arm. Earlier, an Israeli strike near the Zikim area, north of Beit Lahia, killed at least 15 people and injured around 250 others as they waited for aid trucks. Another attack in the Zeitoun neighbourhood, southeast of Gaza City, left two dead and three wounded. In Rafah, southern Gaza, a Palestinian waiting for aid was reportedly shot dead by Israeli forces. Additional strikes in Gaza City's Al-Tuffah and Al-Rimal neighbourhoods killed four more, including those sheltering in schools. The Israeli military has continued its offensive despite international calls for a ceasefire. Since 7 October 2023, more than 59,600 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children. Starvation-related deaths have also risen due to aid blockades and distribution challenges. - Bernama-Anadolu

Motoring influencer, brother jailed for making false police report
Jail time: Tengku Nizaruddin (left) and Tengku Abdul Aziz at the Magistrate's Court in Muar. — Bernama MUAR: A motoring influencer and his younger brother have to serve a one-month jail sentence and pay a RM1,500 fine each after pleading guilty to lodging a false police report about the former's disappearance. Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin, 38, widely known online as Ija, and Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Zainudin, 30, were charged at the Magistrate's Court here with making a false report and conspiring against civil servants at the Lenga police station at 11.38pm on July 15. Based on the facts of the case, Tengku Abdul Aziz had claimed that the last time he saw his brother was at around 4pm on July 14 and that his car was found in Sungai Tui, Bukit Kepong about an hour prior. Tengku Abdul Aziz reported his brother's alleged disappearance to the police while knowing that the information was untrue. A search and rescue mission was then called by the Fire and Rescue Department, police and Rela on the same day. The authorities later uncovered the ruse at around 12.30am on July 19. Investigations found that both brothers left Johor Baru in separate cars on the morning of July 14, where Tengku Nizaruddin had gone to Pagoh while his brother went to another location. Upon reaching Pagoh, Tengku Nizaruddin drove his car into the river and then asked his brother to pick him up. CCTV footage also revealed that the brothers then travelled to Senawang, Negri Sembilan, in the same car, where Tengku Nizaruddin was seen getting into an e-hailing vehicle bound for the Seremban bus terminal. The facts of the case also stated the Immigration Department logged Tengku Nizaruddin's exit from the country to Thailand at Padang Besar, Perlis. Both brothers were charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The brothers legal counsel told the court that Tengku Nizaruddin's actions stemmed from his financial problems. When given the opportunity to speak, Tengku Nizaruddin apologised to the public and those affected by his actions. 'I regret my actions and I don't want to go to jail because my wife is six months' pregnant,' Tengku Nizaruddin said. Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar sentenced both brothers to one month in jail and ordered each of them to pay a fine of RM1,500 in default of the prison sentence. Both paid the fine and started their jail sentence yesterday.

Thailand Declares Martial Law In Eastern Border Provinces Amid Rising Tensions
BANGKOK, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Command on Friday declared martial law in several districts of eastern Thailand, effective immediately, following a second day of escalating Thai-Cambodian border tensions that have reportedly left at least 15 people dead. Deputy Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, Rear Admiral Paratch Rattanachaipan, clarified that the imposition of martial law in parts of Chanthaburi and Trat provinces is intended to grant the military full legal authority to maintain peace and order, while assuring the public that daily life may continue as usual. bootstrap slideshow He stated that the growing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border have raised concerns for the safety and security of residents in the affected regions. 'In response, the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Protection Command has exercised its authority under the Martial Law Act of 1914 to extend martial law to specific inland districts in both Chanthaburi and Trat,' he said in a statement issued on Friday. 'This measure enables military personnel to legally maintain order and effectively carry out critical tasks, such as designating safe zones for civilians.' He added that the decision was made by the Commander of the Border Protection Command for Chanthaburi and Trat, following ongoing developments in the area. He emphasised that residents in the affected districts can continue their daily activities as normal, as has been the case in other areas where martial law has previously been enforced. Martial law is the temporary imposition of military rule over a civilian population, typically in times of extreme emergency, war, or severe civil unrest, when the civilian authorities are deemed unable to maintain public order and safety.
