Miami Dolphins impressed by Zach Wilson's 'supreme arm talent'

Yahoo12-06-2025
MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has been impressed by the mental toughness of backup quarterback Zach Wilson, who once flamed out with the New York Jets as a No. 2 overall pick.
"He looks like a guy that has been through some s--- and found his way through it," McDaniel said on the first day of mandatory minicamp.

Wilson, 25, spent last season resetting with the Denver Broncos. He did not play though he flashed in the preseason and benefitted from working with Sean Payton.
It was a bit of a healing process, not too dissimilar from when Tua Tagovailoa emerged from the Brian Flores era with scars.
Zach Wilson has 'been through some s---,' says Mike McDaniel
"There's residuals to people just in general that have gone through things," McDaniel said. "He's come close to about as much scrutiny as one could have. You're a top three draft pick in New York City. Well, I mean I think Joe Namath figured that out and everybody else is like, well, this is a lot. But that's what I see, is a guy that is playing football with the empowerment of, 'You know what? I'm strong enough to handle anything.'"

It's hard not to miss Wilson's cannon arm in practice.
Wilson fires lasers. But playing quarterback in the NFL is obviously about much more than that.
New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson tries to elude the pressure of Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins during the first half at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Dec. 17, 2023.
"A guy who is continually working at his craft, who has supreme arm talent, it's cool to watch him grow, particularly in our offense, because guys with arm talent always throw it late," McDaniel said. "You have a stronger arm, I'll just wait and see it. Go back to like John Elway and dudes with cannons."
Dolphins look to polish former No. 2 pick Zach Wilson
McDaniel and the staff are pushing Wilson to improve footwork, timing and rhythm.
"I'm gonna challenge the guy," McDaniel said.

NY Giants Rookie Makes Major Statement on Social Media

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As the New York Giants enter the 2025 NFL season, one of their first-round rookies makes one thing clear: they are not to be viewed as a rookie. Abdul Carter took to Instagram to send a clear message to the NFL. "Year 1, I ain't no rookie," Carter wrote on his personal Instagram account. "[I've] been playing this game a long time. Ball is ball. I love this [expletive]." The Pennsylvania native took his talents to his state's top school for his NCAA run. At Penn State, Carter started nearly half of his games as a freshman. He collected 56 tackles and 6.5 sacks through his first season at the NCAA level. His production took a slight dip, as he picked up 48 tackles and just 4.5 sacks. Collecting 16 games of action last year, the numbers were back up in a big way. Carter ended up totaling 68 tackles. He got to the quarterback for 12 sacks, and he forced two fumbles throughout the year. Although Carter's fandom of the Philadelphia Eagles led many to believe his hometown team would attempt to work wonders to get him after they won the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history, there was no trade-up to one or two for Philadelphia. Carter was on the board when the Giants went on the clock with the third-overall pick. It was a no-brainer selection for New York, which already has a stellar pass rush. The early reports that came from spring practice suggested he's had a dominant presence and has already looked as good as advertised—if not better. This week, Carter will join his fellow rookies in reporting to the Giants' training camp for the first few days. On July 22, the rest of the team is expected to report, joining Carter and the group of rookies after they get their feet wet. Carter's first game opportunity will come on August 9, when the Giants will pay a visit to the Buffalo Bills for an afternoon kickoff. Eagles' Nick Sirianni blasts 'bulls---' narratives around Super Bowl champ Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni snapped back at critics who have claimed that quarterback Jalen Hurts was carried to a Super Bowl title during the 2024 season. Sirianni on Monday didn't want to hear any of it and slammed the "bulls---" narratives around Hurts that he was just a game-managing quarterback who was helped tremendously due to the addition of a superstar running back and an elite offensive line. "I mean, he plays the most important position in all sports," Sirianni said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. "And it's the most ultimate team game there is. And what I admire about him is his selflessness of doing anything we need to do to win. "I mean, obviously, anybody who plays quarterback is going to want to throw it 50 times a game. But he'll do anything. If he has to throw 50 times a game, he's ready to do that. If he has to hand it off 50 times a game, he's ready to do that." The Eagles were 14-3 in the regular season before going on a playoff run that led to a brutal beatdown of the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Meanwhile, the offense was seventh in points scored and eighth in yards gained in the NFL. Hurts had 2,903 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns. It also helped to have Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley in the backfield. For Sirianni, what mattered the most to him was to put the team in a position to win ball games. "You name me a team that wins and wins consistently that doesn't have good players around you," Sirianni said. "Like, you name me a coach that doesn't have good players around him that wins. Like, you don't win with bad players, and it's the same thing you don't win with bad players as you're a quarterback either. "It's a team game. Yeah, that always bothers me to be honest with you, when it's talked about because it's football." Hurts has proven to be an elite quarterback since he took the starting job in 2021. He's a two-time Pro Bowler and was the Super Bowl LIX MVP. In 77 games with the Eagles over his career, he has 14,667 passing yards and 85 passing touchdowns. Notes: Dan Campbell talks how special Detroit is as a sports town

Detroit Lions' coach Dan Campbell is a popular guy these days. Just a few days ago, he joined 96.7 am in Dallas to discuss how much he loves being in Detroit. We love you too, Dan. And while he still has some free time before training camp kicks off for Detroit later this month, he jumped on, 'The LiucciCast,' hosted by Billy Liucci over on the TexAgs YouTube channel. Advertisement Early on in the show, Liucci lets viewers and listeners know that he and Campbell are close, and you can certainly tell. Campbell, who is typically very comfortable talking to whoever, seemed especially at home talking with his old friend. The two talked about a ton of different subjects in the nearly hour-long episode. From their time together at Texas A&M, to Campbell's coaching and playing journey that led to him to Detroit. 'You go to Detroit right now, and it's in the building, in the tunnels, it's whoever is getting on and off the elevator,' said Liucci of the feeling in the city after the first playoff win back in 2023. 'It means a lot you know, and I have said this before, but I had my eyes open to this place when I played here,' said Campbell. 'Oh my god, this is a sleeping giant. This could be one of the best places ever to come and play and be a part of this. They love their Detroit Lions, they love sports. It's just waiting. If you could just get everything aligned properly, bring in the right pieces, the right people—this could be something special.' If you have the time, I highly recommend giving the entire interview a listen or watch. You can watch the entire episode right here. And now, onto the rest of today's notes: Advertisement Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston wrote about Lions' linebacker Grant Stuard's perspective on football, as well as his annual youth football camp. Congrats to Lions' rookie guard Miles Frazier on his recent engagement. One of my favorite moments from the series right here. Lions' rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa joined, 'Up & Adams,' with host Kay Adams to discuss his Lambeau Leap aspirations in Week 1.
