Automechanika Riyadh 2025 officially opens tomorrow
Highlights include Automechanika Academy, the event's industry knowledge platform and The Premium Club, an exclusive programme that connects senior buyers and key decision-makers
Riyadh, KSA: Automechanika Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's leading regional trade show for the automotive aftermarket industry, will officially open tomorrow for a landmark seventh edition, taking place until 30 April at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Centre (RICEC).
The event will feature over 450 exhibitors from more than 30 countries and is expected to welcome more than 15,000 visitors, a 15% increase from last year when the show welcomed 13,000 industry professionals.
To facilitate the demand from exhibitors, which are up over 32%, and increased visitor numbers, Automechanika Riyadh will be held across five halls, showcasing a dynamic mix of products and solutions from the automotive market industry.
Saudi companies account for nearly 10% of all exhibitors, underscoring the market growth within the country. Underscoring the international draw of Saudi Arabia and its burgeoning position on the global automotive aftermarket stage, exhibitors will showcase solutions from over 30 countries, from Australia to Brazil, and Cambodia to Peru.
In addition, there will be eight country pavilions with companies from Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, and Turkey on show, as well as two new dedicated areas for Italian and Indian exhibitors.

The packed conference programme will take place across the event's three days. The theme switches to Core Aftermarket Operations & Sustainable Supply Chain on day two. The focus will address strategies for the Saudi Arabia aftermarket, maximising digital opportunities in the evolving automotive landscape, and accommodating customers to shape the industry's future in Saudi Arabia.
On the final day, the Modern Workshop will delve into tackling skills shortages, embracing digital change, and aligning business goals in the opening session, which will be followed up by a session focused on preparing technicians for advanced hybrid vehicle servicing.

Gulf rail projects paving the way for connected, sustainable future
The Gulf region is witnessing an unprecedented rail boom that is setting the stage for a new era of regional integration and sustainable economic growth, according to David Franks, Managing Director of Keolis MHI. He said the transformation is being powered by multi-billion-dollar investments in modern infrastructure across the GCC. Franks noted that projects such as Etihad Rail in the UAE, the Hafeet Rail connection with Oman, and Saudi Arabia's Landbridge are central to a broader vision of regional connectivity. These initiatives, he added, are designed to link cities, ports, and economic hubs through a seamless network. The 2,177-kilometre GCC Railway project, he explained, reflects the shared ambition of Gulf states to create an integrated transport ecosystem. He highlighted the role of rail in achieving environmental sustainability, calling it one of the most energy-efficient and low-emission modes of transport. Franks pointed out that the region has already begun pioneering efforts in this area, most notably with Saudi Arabia's trial of a hydrogen-powered train, the first of its kind in the Middle East. Franks stressed that the ongoing transformation in Gulf transportation is underpinned by advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive maintenance systems, smart ticketing, and real-time passenger updates. These innovations, he said, are enhancing passenger experience while improving efficiency, safety, and operational excellence. He also emphasized Keolis MHI's commitment to this evolution, noting the company's global operating experience across four continents. Franks explained that Keolis MHI is actively transferring international best practices to the region, ensuring that safety, innovation, and quality are embedded into every aspect of operation. Beyond operations, Franks said Keolis MHI is also contributing to the development of smart, connected cities. This includes investing in local talent, supporting Emiratisation and localisation initiatives, and improving last-mile connectivity to enhance quality of life and foster inclusive transport systems. He underscored the importance of strong public-private partnerships in delivering long-term success for large-scale rail infrastructure. According to Franks, close collaboration between governments and operators is critical to ensure that projects are delivered efficiently, resiliently, and in line with public expectations. Franks outlined key milestones in the region's rail agenda. He noted that the second phase of Etihad Rail commenced operations in February 2023, extending the network to 900 kilometres. While freight services are operational, passenger services are still under planning. He also referenced the Hafeet Rail project—a $3 billion joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala—which aims to link Abu Dhabi with the port city of Sohar via a 303-kilometre line. On the Saudi front, Franks said the Landbridge Project consists of a 950-kilometre freight line between Jeddah and Riyadh, and an additional 115-kilometre track connecting Dammam to Jubail. This network, he stated, will significantly boost east-west freight movement across the Kingdom. Franks also hailed Saudi Arabia's hydrogen train pilot, conducted in 2024, as a regional milestone that signals a broader shift toward clean and sustainable transport technologies. Looking ahead, he said the GCC Railway Network, slated for completion by 2030, will redefine regional mobility by streamlining trade and facilitating smooth cross-border passenger movement across Gulf nations. Franks concluded by stating that the region's rail renaissance goes beyond infrastructure development. It represents a global model for modern, sustainable, and tech-enabled transport systems built on innovation, collaboration, and a forward-looking vision. India's Modi announces credit worth $565 million to Maldives
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a $565-million line of credit to the Maldives during a visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago, as the two countries launched formal talks for a free-trade agreement. Modi is visiting the Maldives, known for its upmarket tourist resorts, to mark the 60th anniversary of its independence and diplomatic relations between the two countries. The announcement came during Modi's joint media statement with Maldives' President Mohamed Muizzu. The two-day visit is crucial to India's ambition to control the seas and shipping routes of the Indian Ocean in a race with its regional rival China. It also marks the further easing of diplomatic tensions between the two nations that followed the election of pro-China Muizzu in 2023. Regional powers India and China compete for influence in the archipelago nation, which is strategically located in the Indian Ocean. On Friday, Modi witnessed the exchange of agreements to cooperate in sectors such as fisheries, health, tourism and digital development. He also formally handed dozens of heavy vehicles to the Maldives' defense forces. 'India is Maldives' closest neighbor. Maldives holds an important place in both India's neighborhood- first policy and ocean vision,' Modi said. 'India is also proud to be Maldives' most trusted friend.' The line of credit will be used for 'infrastructure and development projects in line with the priorities of the people of the Maldives,' he said. 'India will continue to support Maldives in developing its defence capabilities. Peace, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region is our common goal,' he added. During Muizzu's visit to India last October, India announced financial support to the cash-strapped Maldives in the form of a $100-million treasury bills rollover and the countries signed a $400-million currency swap agreement. Tensions between India and the Maldives grew since Muizzu, who favored closer ties with China, was elected in 2023 after defeating India-friendly incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Leading up to the election, Muizzu had promised to expel Indian soldiers deployed in the Maldives to help with humanitarian assistance. Last year New Delhi replaced dozens of its soldiers in the Maldives with civilian experts. Measure by Modi to promote tourism in India's Lakshadweep archipelago, off the southwestern coast of the Indian mainland, also sparked anger from Maldivians, who saw it as a move to lure Indian tourists away from their country. Indian celebrities then called for a tourism boycott to the Maldives. The dispute deepened when Muizzu visited China ahead of India in January last year, a move seen by New Delhi as a snub. On his return, Muizzu spelled out plans to rid his tiny nation of dependence on India for health facilities, medicines and import of staples. Relations started to improve after Muizzu attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony for a third five-year term. Muizzu has toned down his anti-Indian rhetoric, and official contacts with New Delhi have intensified as concerns grew about Maldives' economy. India has long been a critical provider of development assistance to the Maldives. Meanwhile, the Maldives joined China's Belt and Road Initiative in 2013 to build ports and highways and expand trade as well as China's influence across Asia, Africa, and Europe. Modi will attend the Maldives' 60th independence anniversary from being a British protectorate on Saturday. Separately, the Reserve Bank of India has 'won the battle against inflation' but the war is ongoing as price stability remains the central goal, Governor Sanjay Malhotra said during a fireside chat at a Financial Express event on Friday. The RBI delivered a larger-than-expected 50 basis point rate cut at its June policy review but shifted its stance to 'neutral,' suggesting limited room for further easing. However, with retail inflation falling to a six-year low and likely to hit a record low in July, calls have grown for at least one more rate cut this year. Many analysts argue the sharp disinflation also points to weakening demand in the economy. Malhotra said monetary policy being forward looking, will place greater focus on the outlook for growth and inflation, rather than current levels when the policy panel meets on Aug. 6. The change in stance to 'neutral' did not mean a reversal from the easing of policy, he said. 'We have the flexibility to move up, down or pause. Yes, it does mean, the bar for further easing is higher than it would have been if it (stance) was accommodative,' he added. Monetary policy transmission has quickened due to rate cuts and will help in supporting economic growth as overall flow of funds to the industry and economy is improving, Malhotra said. Piastri takes pole for Belgian Grand Prix sprint race ahead of Verstappen
Series leader Oscar Piastri secured pole position for Saturday's sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix when he beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.477 seconds with a devastating record lap in his McLaren. The 24-year-old Australian, who leads the drivers' championship by eight points ahead of McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, clocked a fastest lap in 1min 40.510sec on Friday to seize the prime starting position. He was six-tenths of a second faster than Norris who was third ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon of Haas, Carlos Sainz of Williams and Oliver Bearman in the second Haas. Pierre Gasly was eighth for Alpine ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto while seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton wound up in 18th place after spinning his Ferrari in SQ1. 'That was a good lap!' said Piastri. 'I had a scare in SQ2 with the deletion of my lap, but the car has been mega all day so thanks to the team. The car is great.' Piastri's success helped him erase his disappointment at the British Grand Prix where he was handed a 10-second penalty and felt he missed out on a victory as Norris won to trim his lead in the title race. Verstappen, in his first race weekend since the exit of team boss Christian Horner, said he was satisfied with P2. 'To be there between the two of them is a good result for us,' he said. 'And I enjoyed it out there and the lap was good. The gap is big, so we have to focus on ourselves and the balance of the car.' 'This is Red Bull:' The session began in bright and breezy conditions at the majestic old circuit in the Ardennes, soon after new Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies had made his first public appearance after replacing Horner. As expected, the Frenchman told a news conference his priority was to secure the future of Verstappen. He also revealed he had been as shocked as everyone else when he received the news of Horner's exit and the job offer. 'It came in a completely unexpected way,' he said. 'It came out of the blue and I asked for time to think about it before I realised 'this is Red Bull' and so I rang them back.' As the sprint qualifying began, Verstappen remained in the garage while mechanics worked on his car. It was a minor delay and he was soon on track as Kimi Antonelli spun off at Stavelot in his Mercedes and returned via a deep run in the gravel trap. The Italian was followed by Hamilton who had a big slide off at Stavelot, just managing to stay out of the gravel before going off again at the chicane -- a mechanical problem on his Ferrari wrecking his lap and session. At the top, Verstappen managed to split the two McLarens as he had during the morning practice ahead of Fernando Alonso and George Russell. The two McLarens were first out for SQ2, Piastri once again setting the pace before his lap was deleted because he exceeded track limits at Raidillon, leaving Norris on top. The Australian had to go again as the rest joined the fray, led by Verstappen and Leclerc. A frantic finale ensued with Norris clocking a late fastest lap ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc while Piastri squeezed through in 10th.
